Quote from: SM on Mar 15, 2018, 09:48:49 PMI suspect it's to do with branching. I've never encountered it as far as I know on R4 DVDs, but I think it's more prevalent on R1. When Alien3 got recut, I think R2 and R4 got a seamless cut, but R1 got a branched cut, where the film would cut to added scenes elsewhere on the disk. This lead to Murphy in the vent calling for Spike in the assembly even though he wasn't in the film for R1. In R2 and R4 that line is deleted.

This would allow for deleted scenes to be accessed separately.

Ah, I see. Thanks for humouring me and clearing that up.

Quote from: SM on Mar 15, 2018, 09:48:49 PMOn Anthology only the deleted scenes for Alien were viewable seperately (and perhaps some Aliens stuff via the LD archive).

I've not been through all of that stuff yet, but the Alien LD archive does indeed include the deleted scenes. As an added bonus, the versions in there are the original takes, whereas the versions available for separate viewing on the film disc (in the Blu-ray set, although I'd imagine the R1 Quad is the same, based on what you've said) are the edited versions that were actually reinstated in the Director's Cut. Stuff like the transmission being worse different and the cocoon scene being edited down.

Quote from: SM on Mar 15, 2018, 09:48:49 PMAs far as I know they're all available separately on the blu-rays.

The Blu-rays definitely have the scenes available separately; I checked during the process of trying to figure out what was going on.

That would also explain why Murphy calls for Spike in the Blu-ray version of the Alien 3 Special Edition when he didn't in my old DVD version.

I don't know about the US version, but my R4 Australian Quadrilogy box set doesn't have this option.

I've also heard people ask about this. This option is available for the Anthology Blu-ray box set.

So, a really random (and very anal) question:

I live in the UK, and have the Alien Quadrilogy DVD box set from the early 2000s.

Practically every in-depth review I can find of the set online mentions a couple of features relating to the alternate cuts of each movie that I simply cannot find in my version. Specifically, these features are the ability to watch the new Director's Cut/Special Edition scenes separate from the movie (accessed via the theatrical cut menu), and an optional text track that will put a notification on-screen whenever new footage is being shown during the alternate cuts (activated via the Director's Cut/Special Edition menu).

Both of these features are included in the Alien Anthology set (and I'd assume the related individual Blu-ray releases), but I've been through every menu I can find on my Quadrilogy DVD and there's no sign of either option. I was wondering if someone either from the US, or who otherwise owns the region 1 version of the box set, could kindly check their copy to see if they have these features on their DVDs? I can't imagine any reason they'd strip these options from the region 2 release, but I've seen them mentioned enough times for it to seem as though they must have done for them to be absent on my discs.
