Why did the site get rid of 2 navigation buttons?

The site no longer has the buttons:

Recent unread replies
And
Recent updated posts

They were really useful for checking on posts and updates. Why are they gone?

Like Whiterabbit said, they should be right in the "User Information" box but I'm sure you know that since you used these buttons before.

I see them just fine, it could be some weird local glitch from where you are at maybe?

I bring up the location because in a lot of forum templates they are commonly found at the bottom of the forum browse page and I vaguely recall there being a set of "buttons" near the "mark all messages read" is located in earlier iterations of the website.

That's really odd.

From your screen shot, it looks like the issue is on a phone device.

How is it like on a computer or laptop? On mine it's fine, so it could be a recent phone issue as I used to go on the site on my phone, the two  buttons were still present.

Because you clicked the arrow to hide them. Just click the arrow beside the home button.
