Title: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Nov 14, 2006, 09:07:57 AM
If anybody finds any bugs in the site or forum, post them here. Things such as themes not looking right like I've forgotten to change the colour of something.

Also report any broken links.

Spelling/grammatical error on forums; says Last Post on Yesterday/Today, rather than Last Post Yesterday/Today. On is only needed for a date part yesterday, as then it is listed as a date (I think).

Good point. But it's hard-coded into the forum so I don't know how to change it.

Another thing. The title of the website is Aliens vs Predator Galaxy, when the banner and anywhere else lists it as Alien vs Predator Galaxy (no s).

Also, the title of the homepage says latest news for AvP2, shouldn't there be a gap between AvP and 2?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Nov 20, 2006, 08:59:16 PM
Well spotted. I've often thought what the title of the site should be - whether "Aliens" or "Alien". The thing is when I first started the site, it was for AvP2 which was Aliens vs Predator 2. Thus it developed from that. When AvP came along, I sort of changed the banner with Alien vs Predator at the top. It's not strictly meant to be the title of the site in the banner. It's more along the lines of telling people that this is a site dedicated to Alien and to Predator. I don't know. It's too tricky. Most people refer to it as AvPGalaxy so it's avoided. I do think though that Aliens vs Predator sounds better.

Not sure about the AvP2. Some people write it like that while some others don't. I may change it once the official title has been released.

I see, no worries, I was just wondering whether it was an error, or whether it was intentional.

Says here (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/avpmovie.php?section=avpweapons) that there's a Predator Equipment page:

The icon next to the General Alien-Predator Discussion section does not turn into the No-new topics or posts version even though there are no new topics or posts . . . at least not with the Giger skin. I don't know about the others.

Hmm, it does for me. It showed the new posts icon, then I clicked the board. Came back to the main forum page and it had the no new posts icon.

But I'll look into it when I get more time.

http://www.avpgalaxy.net/downloads.php

Some of those pages (for example AvP and AvP 2 don't link to the pages as provided on the movie page.

Example, movie page downloads - http://www.avpgalaxy.net/avpmovie.php?section=avp2downloads

Downloads page - http://www.avpgalaxy.net/downloads.php?section=avp2movie

I also think all Information pages on the movies should be laid out like the AvP 2 page/url]. (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/avpmovie.php?section=movieavp2)

I think some of the Articles could be linked to under the Other Stuff section, like, and vice versa.

Like the Alien War page isn't on the Articles page, but the Parodies are.

I think the IMAX review could be linked there, among some others.

Ultimate predator,  like lots of little stuff, cycle rates, calibers, and just little things here and there.   The hand guns in predator #1 are not talked about.  Mac had a desert eagle,  Dutch had a 1911. The hand gun descriptions in predator #2 are a little messed up, some 45s are said to be 9mm.  AK info is incorrect the caliber of the AKs is 7.62x39, it was listed as 7.62x51r witch no AK was ever chamberd for.  maybe in some gun smiths back room but nothing mass produced.   I could go on but like I said,  I really dont know if it matters. Please let me know if it dose not. Sorry I was not more specific with the 1st post Ultimate Predator.  I know that some of the members here at AvP are in the military they would probable know better than me what is wrong.  If Im wrong please let me know.   J.D.

Okay, firstly, yeah, I disabled his account. He was originally banned when he made those threads but I cleared out a lot of bans recently. Either way, he's not changed since then. If he's not going to write in proper sentences, there's no use him being here. He's also 13. You need to be 14 to register.

I was just browsing through the website and on the link below, I'm sure that it's not a teleportation device.  When I first seen the light shine on the Ancient Predator, I knew they were shining a 'spot light' on the victor.  They did the same for Lex when they were flying off.  So to me it was basically implying that it was their time to shine...

I believe that if more and more people join and stay on at the same time, then we might be getting that "page unavilable" thing more often then we do, usually it has happened to me only twice (the release of the Red band trailer, and the five minute intro) the average amount of people i see is 50-70, usually for me the problem occurs at 120+. Just saying that this problem might occure far more times if the average amount of users online will be 120+ rather than 50-70.

I just got the message coming into this thread. :-X

My one issue is how all of the buttons and graphics in general outside of the banner seem to turn into broken links as the activity increases. I understand the service issue, but wouldn't it just be slowdown experienced and not the images getting a red x?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs

I've already explained this before. It's a connections issue. There's 224 guests amd 194 members on the site. It's killing the site. If there was another way around this, I would have done so already. Changing hosts would be a lot more expensive and it would honestly take me weeks to actually move all the files and databases. All I can say is deal with it until after AvPR and by then, the traffic to this place will have gone down.

I'm already having to close the website just so you lot can visit the forum.

Pictures are a max width of 600px. If it's wider, it shrinks them and so they look distorted. You have to resize them yourself.

I just changed to the Alien theme and the Forum button doesn't work. It says:

The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Please try the following:

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

Open the www.avpgalaxy.net home page, and then look for links to the information you want.
Click the  Back button to try another link.
Click  Search to look for information on the Internet.

I don't know if this is a bug but in the FAQ thread it says;

Egg - 0 posts - 1 Star
Facehugger - 5 Posts - 1 Star
Chestburster - 50 Posts - 2 Stars
Drone - 100 posts - 3 Stars
Predalien - 250 Posts - 4 Stars
Praetorian - 500 Posts - 5 Stars
Ravager - 1000 Posts - 6 Stars
but I've only ever seen Ravagers with 5 stars  ???

Yeah, I know. There's too many ranks and not enough stars. I really need to rework them to just five ranks and maybe increase the post requirements too.

This is just a suggestion, but when a member becomes a Ravager, why don't you keep the number of stars at 5, but change the color.   :)  It might be less trouble than having to rework ranks and requirements.   :)

I changed something here and you shouldn't receive anymore of these errors from now on.

Not allowed anymore. I've had complaints in the past from artists who found their artwork in other people's fan-made posters, wallpapers etc.

If you didn't create the whole piece from scratch yourself, it won't be allowed in the gallery.

Just one person and he knows who he is.

What I've also noticed is that some people will delete their posts in a thread when they get into an argument or when they're proven to be in the wrong. To be honest, I think people should only ever delete their post if it's the last post in the thread.

The first one is when the page first loads up:

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi659.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu312%2Favpspectrum%2Fscreen1.png&hash=9164800659bc420793bc4ce3be66a060339ebe3e)

And.... this one is after scrolling past the sidebar:

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi659.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu312%2Favpspectrum%2Fscreen2.png&hash=2cffe510f45fcd5a0b8e58c58fcf95198ce988af)

I am runnign IE8 aswell as Darkness, so he should know what's wrong. More and likely its an incomplete <div> tag, or placement. But i'll let him hunt it out. ;) It's only on the 2 column pages.

It's a weird padding problem. I found it a while ago and thought I had fixed it. Presently, it seems to display fine for me in all versions of IE and Firefox but it used to do that on certain pages. Will look into it more.

It may also be a matter of screen resolution, for example, it's fine on my 1024x1200 screen. I dunno if that's it, but it may be. ;)

Padding? I found that to have somehting with like a 700px width, instead of going: width=700, padding=10, you need: width=690, padding=10, that way the dimensions don't screw up. Might be the problem, who knows.

IE is fine, and IE8 is no different than FireFox, Cetanu has issues with other kinds of browsers.

Screen Resolution shouldn't matter, most browsers read the pages to fit, or the html tells it to. I knwo for my V2, I have seperate CSS sheets for older browser users, like IE6 and down. It helps display the same content on any browser.

Not really a bug issue I just didn't want to make a thread for this little question, what font does this site use because my fonts in my browser were messed up but the only AVPG isn't fixed, so which font is it that AVPG uses so I can download a new file.

The site uses standard fonts which everbody has. Arial on the main site and Verdana on the forum. You'd have to show me a screenshot of the error and which page you get it on.

Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs

First off this topic is for reporting problems/bugs about the forum and/or website in general, secondly, the way you add someone as a buddy is you click on the small person icon on the lower left of the person's display picture which will bring up their profile. You can also do this by clicking their display name.

Once their profile comes up scroll to 'Current Status' and click [Add To Buddy List].

I don't know if that is sarcasm or not.
I meant to say is, yes, servers are cheap/hosts are cheap. But even cheap can be expensive to some, it's the main reason why I don't have a website myself for my photography and design business.
I am not saying Darkness doesn't have the money, but his money can be going to better or more important things.

Only 5,000? I've been here pretty much since the site re-opened and i've only got around 1,500! I need to improve my average of 1 post a day >_>

Not exactly. I checked my javascript, everything is correctly. The problem is in my Firefox... In case of IE  everything is right, but in case of FF, isn't... Any ideas? :(

BTW in other sites I have no problem with it... :(

Your javascript isn't enabled. That's why. If you're running noscript, add the site to your exceptions. If you're not using that plugin, go to options, content, enable javascript in firefox.

The same thing is happening to me, but my Javascript is enabled. I'm also using Firefox.

So we've got this same problem, Purebreed? :( My javascript is enabled too, I checked, updated and all... :( As I said - it happens only in FF, but I don't want to use anything else. On other sites I've got no problems, everything works correctly... Only here, in the most important place...

I don't think the issue is at my end. The buttons appear fine in my firefox. The only way I can reproduce your error is by actively disabling javascript. Do you have any plugins that could interfere with it? Or a firewall or web filter?

I don't have a plug-in called 'Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.170.4' enabled because apparently it is known to cause security or stability issues, could that be the problem? I know most of the emoticon codes and spoiler tags etc. anyway, it's just easier when they're actually visible.

Depends on the warning, some are just notifications. It should be noted on the subject line tho. In general, it's just a penalty system we use to keep track of troublesome members.

Another thing. The title of the website is Aliens vs Predator Galaxy, when the banner and anywhere else lists it as Alien vs Predator Galaxy (no s).

Also, the title of the homepage says latest news for AvP2, shouldn't there be a gap between AvP and 2?

It's supposed to be Alien vs Predator without the -s.

And we haven't used that title since Requiem.

Um you could have a mini calender for all things (purchasable) that have yet to be released. For example if we had one now it would be kinda like
Predator neca figures 10th sep (obviously these are made up)
Predator mcfarlane figures 15th sep
Predators DVD/Blu-Ray 29th sep
Predators Triple pack DVD/Blu-Ray 29th sep
Alien Anthology Blu-Ray 26th oct.

Obviously better done just a suggestion.

A temp fix is to edit your hosts file (located in windows\system32\drivers\etc\) and add this entry:

173.193.28.52 avpgalaxy.net

You should then be able to access it with that. You'll have to remove it when your ISP has updated its DNS servers.

That's intended. The main site and forum are really separate things. Very limited connection between them. Just haven't figured what to replace the login box with right now.

I just discovered the strangest thing. On a bit of curiosity about what the AVPG review said of Alien 3, I went and clicked on it. It brought me to this (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/fan-films/the-calm/review/). I clicked on some of the other reviews (namely Resurrection and Alien) and they all brought me to that same page.

Any idea what's up?

Is is me or is the site really slow? I find I need to refresh a lot to get the full page. Facebook, Youtube, Alienexperience, and South Park Studios are running lightning fast. But here I am just so slow. If 4 other sites are literally lightning fast but this one so slow then I figure it is a probem with the site, that is my theory anyway, I am no computer expert.
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs

So, guys. I'm having a really hard time loading the forum, and it's not me. I've scanned repeatedly the computer and even erased some of my data to leave free space and it still doesn't load right. It either loads after a lot of time, loads half of a page, of doesn't load at all. It seems to be working better now but I'm not sure. What I'm asking is if there have been new features inserted recently.

The site running so slow is really pissing me off since I never seen the site run so slow before. Maybe all of the guest viewing the site because of the upcoming Alien prequel? AVPR hype was much bigger, and I never seen the site run so slow back a few years back.

It seems like Darkness is never really on anymore.

I don't know why the show post sections hasn't been sorted chronologically, or it has and news posts and non news post aren't differentiated on the internet server, or some computer shit like that.

Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: MrBrokenTusks. on Jan 19, 2011, 06:25:03 PM
The site is amazing, and as much as I am annoyed I doubt it's the moderaters fault. They seem real nice, but how does the system work, is it like when you block someone there messages are hidden so the mod has to be in the thread to know it needs verification or is it like a pm system?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: OmegaZilla on Jan 19, 2011, 06:32:38 PM
If it's not the site staff's fault, then I don't know what to say.
We can't go further on this without specifying what kind of  site this is - so we could acknowledge the system it uses, perhaps. Does it use Invision power boards? Or what?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Jan 19, 2011, 06:40:22 PM
The system is in place to stop spamming. Remember when Predators came out and people from IMDB completely spammed our Predators board? We had to introduce post approval because of that. Lately, we've had one guy on here registering and spamming with 20+ posts before someone is online to ban him.

Post approval affects people who have under 50 posts. It was previously 5 posts but we had to increase it this week. At least for the time being. Mods are on frequently so it doesn't take very long to get your post approved if you're in this group.
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs

I haven't been able to access the forum or any other part of the site except front page. an "Error 403" screen blocks me.

i looked into it further and it told me the server's security system has my(one of the) IP addresses i use blocked for security reasons. how did this happen?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Apr 23, 2011, 06:30:05 AM
The forum looks up all ip addresses from guests and checks if they're spam bots. If your IP is in the list, it gives you a 403 error. Members who are logged in aren't affected by this. If you give me the IP address you were using, and the technical support key on the error page, I can find out why you were blocked. It possibly has something to do with where you're from.

I have this same problem now... It appeared suddenly, I don't know why...

My dates:
physical address:
00-1E-65-D0-BB-08

IPv6:
FE80::88BF: BC05:F7F8:24%11

router IP:
192.168.1.1.

technical support key is: 59ba-1b21-2b02-1b1f

Please, help me... :(

EDIT: It seems that my problem is fixed. Thank you very much. :)

Don't know about anyone else, but the site's been loading really slowly for me for the best part of a week now. I figured it was something temporary, but it doesn't look that way anymore. And other sites load up just fine.

Any ideas? :(

I haven't had any problems this week. It's loading quite fast.

It's loading perfectly fine for me as well.

Well, except for the few times each day when it doesn't load at all and I have to wait a minute and try again. But that has been happening for years.

Then I guess it's just me. I'll try and figure it out.

When I log in on the forum page, I can't help but notice that the type-in boxes are all scrunched to the left.  Why's that?  It used to be on the right.

Just a small question, all the banned users don't appear banned to me anymore. Does this appear to everyone or is it just a problem of my pc?

No, it was removed after this guy complained: http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=38712.0 (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=38712.0)

He made a good point. It doesn't look good. You can still check if they're banned by going to their profile page though.

No particular reason, just was changed in the upgrade to SMF 2.0. I guess it looks more symmetrical on the left.

Not a real bug, but I'd like to request a feature.
Could you add a "reviews" page to http://www.avpgalaxy.net/literature/ (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/literature/) ?
Technically it already exists, or at least should:
http://www.avpgalaxy.net/literature (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/literature)/reviews/predator-omnibus-volume-4/

Not sure where this goes but the book and comic reviews seem to be down. When you click on Literature you can only read a brief prieview and see the cover of the books, there is no review.

I think at one point there was, maybe I just can't find it  anymore?

SMF limitations, its part of the forum not much you can do about that, happens to me every once and a while here, just edit the text in a text editor then post it, is your best bet.

I have a question about the paid subscription feature. :)

I go to the paypal site and put in all my debit card info, and that is as far as I get, for then it decided to display this annoying little message:

Quote"The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit or debit card number."

So basically, it's saying I'm f**ked. And nothing works, I've tried everything. Does it have something to do with the amount being in euros? Can it only be euros? Only people from the EU can subscribe?
Wat.

For a while now I've been unable to access the site's galleries. My internet provider stops the connection with a message saying: "Warning: This site is suspected to contain a virus!" I don't want to access the galleries if there's harmful content...
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Space Sweeper on Dec 16, 2013, 03:11:57 PM
I believe this error may be isolated to me, but I'm not sure.

Every time I try to access a new page on the forum portion of the site, this error message comes up:

It'll go away after I hit refresh one or two times, but it'll always come back as soon as I click another link. No idea why this is happening, and I'm not sure if it's limited to just my IP but holy shit, it is extremely annoying and I have no clue how to get rid of it permanently.

On what I'm sure is the same topic, YouTube embedded videos are coming up as this only:

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi116.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo24%2Fdhelor%2Fbut_wait_theres_more.jpg&hash=9f5a67726db74caf71a827e882268f5e7eb0a338)

Post previews won't load at all, and it's a miracle or a minute long delay if I'm able to quote a post:

And sometimes, I just get a message saying "Incorrect key file for table './avpgalax_smf/smf_members.MYI'; try to repair it" at the top left of a white error screen.

It's also doing this exact same thing when I try to access the site on my phone, if not more persistently. This has been happening since a prolonged server crash yesterday that I'm not even sure occured for anyone else. I'm like Patrick Swayze in that movie where nobody could see or hear him except for Whoopi Goldberg. Roadhouse, I think.

PLEASE HELP.

Yeah, it works on the wretched hive known as Internet Explorer, but I use Firefox exclusively (on my phone as well), as opposed to Google Chrome or Safari.  :-\

I checked some sites about the Database Error message and they said it's likely an adjustment that needs to be made via the SMF Admin Panel.

No, it doesn't work when you go to the last page. That's why we have to keep revisiting the thread. And yes, if you didn't go to the last page, the new button would still be there. It's always been like that.

I pretty much always jump straight to the last page when reading new posts and the problem is still there. :-\
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Feb 02, 2014, 08:54:47 AM
Okay, so I've done a lot of testing with it and

a) wherever you get to in the topic, it is marking it as read up to that point.

b) the 'new' image next to a topic will always be there unless you go to the last page of the topic. I did test this on my account, another account and fresh install and even on the official SMF forum, it only goes away if you go to the last page and it does it on every single thread for me. It does indeed seem to be the default behaviour though I don't think it used to be like this. I'm sure if you went to page one, it would mark the whole topic as read. But it's happening on the official forum so it's not an issue here. I don't think it's an issue with any of their updates either. It's a bit of a mystery.

c) I logged into your account Shasvre and it does mark it as read if you go to the last page. It does it on every thread every time. I can't really replicate the problem if it still isn't doing anything for you. I thought maybe it could be a browser, but I tested it in those too and it works as intended.

So while trying out this new theme I found that when you find a quote with a spoiler tag in it and you use the scroll bar the spoiler tag moves with the scroll bar (up and down) and it'll go behind text and stuff. When you click on the spoiler tag it likes to "teleport" too.

I'd take a picture but the spoiler tag has potential spoilers in it so I'll leave a link and let you be the judge.

http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=50646.0;topicseen (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=50646.0;topicseen)

I assume it's a problem because when you look at a spoiler tag in a regular post (not in a quote) the spoiler tag is normal, it doesn't do anything weird like it does when it is in a quote.
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Jun 01, 2014, 07:51:56 AM
Can't seem to replicate that problem. Spoiler tags in quotes behave the same with or without quotes in all latest browsers.

Seems like an issue with OSX/IE.

Anyone else having problem embedding YouTube videos every now and then? There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when it will work or not. I know some YouTube videos won't embedd, but this isn't that. This could be a video that someone else have posted, for example and when I try to post it, it just shows up as an URL. Then, trying to post it later, it shows up as a video just fine.

I have a minor if annoying problem with saving changes to my forum profile. For some reason, the ability to add your own avatar via an image URL does not work for me. I have used two different image sharing websites but neither work. Either it cannot read the external images from these sites, the image is the wrong file type or size, or the forum does not recognize the option  to post an external image link at all.

I usually use Imgbox to host my pictures and I had the same problem. It worked fine once I uploaded it to Imgur however.

An avatar can only be 100 x 100 pixels. These two are too big.

Try this one and see if it works.

Also I can't find the thread in the general film/TV forum about the new Marry Poppins movie. I have searched all the way back till 2015 with no results.

Nothing serious, but sometimes I use the insert image thing to display a picture and the picture will show up briefly, but the next day it'll be gone despite the url still being in my post and working by itself. Is this the host denying hotlinking, or a problem with this site?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs

Do you have an example?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Xeno Killer 2179 on Oct 17, 2020, 06:33:09 PM
I had two recent post with images that did this so I changed them out for alternate urls.

I'm 99% sure these were the ones that disappeared:
Spoiler
(https://memestatic.fjcdn.com/pictures/Tarry+kind+gerbil_535609_8018545.jpg)

[close]

It's done this to me for as long as I've been on this site (roughly 10 years) and I've had different computers and ISPs throughout that time. It would be nice to know how to avoid this because I occasionally have blank posts due to it, but only find out days after the fact since I always check a post after making one to see it posted correctly.

____

EDIT
I just checked this post on another device; the memestatic image does not show but the other does (I'm not sure if it will stay or disappear later, since I think it vanished once before. On this computer it shows both images, and if I'm right, in a day or two the memestatic image won't display on my own computer.

EDIT 2
The memestatic image disappeared after clearing my internet browser history.
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Oct 18, 2020, 09:16:02 AM
Yeah, looks like with the memestatic, they prevent hotlinking or even direct linking to the image. I think the way hotlinking works is based on your referrer. When you load the page, it'll send the referrer to the other website asking for the image. If they've blocked all referrers except their own, it won't show. Sometimes, it might appear occasionally if the referrer you send to them is blank.

The reason the memestatic showed for you initially, is because you viewed on their website and as you said it was in your browser cache so the browser didn't need to contact them to get the image. I recommend hosting images on the free-image hosting sites. Back in my day, it was imageshack and photobucket but there doesn't seem to be many left other than imgur.

If I click on a thread that has new messages, it also marks the thread below it as read, removing the "new messages" symbol from it. Not a big deal really, but it gets a little confusing if entering a board with lots of unread threads.

This, but in a broader sense. The oldskool forum style is half the reason I hang around, but that audience is a dying breed. Is there any intention to get more modern software with more features and better embedding, somewhere down the line?
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on Feb 26, 2021, 12:56:53 PM
The embedding does generally work. I know tweets don't always because people put the ?s at the end.

I do like SMF but development has gotten so slow on it. SMF 2.1 is still coming which brings a few new features. No plans to change it, no. A lot of the site is based around SMF, the amount of work involved in say changing over to vbulletin, it's just too much. It'd be like learning everything from scratch.

Hmm, the title thing is to do with when the news post is posted on the frontpage, it's copied to the forum and weird characters sometimes appear for apostrophes, speech marks etc. I still need to fix that.

That one is deliberate as guest posts are on post approval, same as new members. You can still see them on the frontpage but on the forum, they're temporarily hidden. Just to limit the amount of damage guests could do. I don't think members tend to reply guests on the forum but yeah, I see the point but I don't think it would make sense to have them at the end when they're approved as the conversation may have moved on.

Oh, it's because you're copying and pasting into the WYSWYG editor instead of the code editor. I can see in the text that it's got the font and size tags in there. When posting a reply, you need to click the button below to get back to the code editor.

I don't really use the WYSWYG editor. It basically tries to apply formatting to stuff automatically.

When I try to upload a custom avatar I get an error message.

I copy and paste the URL, but it keeps saying error and to contact admin.

Not sure if it would be helpful but avatar image has to be a small one. Also, don't try to upload pics from wikis

Well for one the link doesn't go anywhere.

You need an image that is typically 100 x 100 pixels, which can be done by either yourself via in Paint (simple) and free alternatives to Photoshop like GIMP (more options), or you can go to Signature and Avatar Requests (https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=387.0) to make a request.

But either way that image then has to be uploaded to an image hosting site in order to be used, such as imgur or imageshack for example.

This is all helpful. Thank you all very much. I think I'll make a request in thread. :)

Edit: Thanks again, I finally was able to upload it. via imageshack.

Question?

When replying to a pm via the reply button in the message you received. Does the message...your reply not show in the message sent folder? When I checked the folder nothing was shown. So resent the messages. Then I found out they did go through. I'm only at 34 percent of messages allowed stored.

Also if I may have a AVPGalaxy email address. I had one years ago when I first subscribed but have not always kept the subscription current. So I don't know if it would be the same.

Thanks in advance. :)

They should show in the sent items as long as the tick box is checked either in your profile or under the reply box. Mine are all in there Not sure if the quota applies to sent items actually.

The email address would be the same. I don't delete them if somebody's subscription lapses.

Nowhere better to put this so:

I suggest changing this to:

Alien-Predator Games
Covers the AvP Tabletop, PC & Console Games.

Yes an android. Used dogpile to log in tonight. On Yahoo I get the same message now. That worked for one day. I will bring my lap top home and see if I get the same message using it.

I'm not familiar with white-list. Weird how it just showed up one day. I thought at first it was one of those malware messages.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will Google white-list. :)

It's not that, for example I just viewed the new posts in the Prey section, went back to the main menu and the picture was still dark/new posts rather than pale. I assume it's something to do with caching. Using Chrome on PC fwiw.
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: Darkness on May 31, 2022, 05:32:39 AM
You actually have to go into the board itself. If you're clicking on that icon which just shows unread posts, it's just showing the unread posts. I've just gone into the Prey board and then back out again, it says no new read posts.
Title: Re: Forum/Website Bugs
Post by: [cancerblack] on May 31, 2022, 06:33:31 AM
No, that's what I've been doing. Going into that board, going into that thread, reading the new posts, then clicking a top/bottom of the page link back to the front page of the forum, then still seeing unread posts where there are none. Across all the boards I regularly use.

Yeah, I'm not really sure about this one because it works every time for me. I just went into the Alien Films board, came back out and it didn't do it. But when I went into the Alien 5 subboard, and came back, it did mark it as read. It can't be related to caching. The bright and dark image is the same image. What's changing is the opacity. Not to get too technical but if you right click and click inspect and find the image, the darker image should have the board_off class and that gives it a lower opacity.

I've moved it to the left. It should actually be on the left in the new version but I moved it to the right to match what we used to have. But it does get hidden if the topic title is too long.

I think it is functioning correctly for me. The only other option would be to keep it constantly fixed at the top of just make it so that the user has to scroll all the way to access it.

PC, Chrome. I believe Blue's on an Android. For me it's happening when I like posts on the forum proper.

I'll try to make a note of it, although sometimes I don't actually notice for hours or days depending on how often I visit a given thread.

The most recent time it happened and I noticed was today, within a couple of minutes of Blue posting the thread about her storyboards in Alien Films, I had hit Like and it'd shown on my end as successful, but she informed me it wasn't showing and sure enough, when I went back to the page...

So it was a few minutes after whatever the time was when that thread was made.

It appears you are correct.

I checked the alerts for that post. An alert was sent for your first like at 23:19. Then the second alert for the one that is there at 23:23.

I did a search of alerts that have been sent but there was no corresponding like. Does seem to be quite a lot for Blue but there is a wide range of people. Of course, an alert is sent if you like something then remove it yourself so this might not be all that accurate. (the next SMF update will actually remove unread alerts from people if you unlike their post). I'll report it to SMF.

Here's yours where an alert has been sent but no current like for that post.

Forum has been updated to 2.1.3. A lot of these notification issues should be fixed now.

QuoteNotification enhancement - Cleanup unread notifications after post approvals, after closing moderation reports, and after unlikes.
Notification enhancement - Cleanup unread orphan alerts, created by message or topic deletions or permission changes.
Notification enhancement - Cleanup unread quote and mention alerts if they were removed during a post edit.
Notification bug - Fixed a bug where the alert count displayed was incorrect.

Full list of changes: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=584230.0

Please report any new issues again.

Not sure if this is the right place to raise this;

Over the weekend I finally clicked to become an AvPGalaxy subscriber. I made the payment via PayPal by clicking the link whilst logged into the forum, however nothing changed. I thought perhaps it may take a little time so I waited (logged in and out but no change) - I emailed the main AvPGalaxy email to ask (in case there is a waiting period whilst a mod has to approve it or something) but I haven't heard anything back - not sure who I need to contact? 😅

Additional info: on my PayPal receipt it has my profile ID listed as a string of letters and numbers rather than my profile name. Unsure if that is relevant? 😅

That would be why I can't find it haha - No problem (and thanks Darkness) 😅 that's a pity, I quite liked the idea of using it, as I've recently been unifying all my usernames to match on other platforms etc - would've loved to tie em altogether with the email) Just a heads up, they are still being advertised as one of the perks of subscribing (it may need amending) 😊👍

I thought I had removed any references for them. I've now updated that page on the main site.

Yeah, when I was going through the list a year or so ago, I realised there was a lot on there of people (including old staff members) who not only weren't staff or subscribers anymore but they hadn't even visited the site in years. Then I thought should they really have them even though they're no longer staff/subscribers. But then I went further and decided they should only be for active staff members.

Oh it completely makes sense, both from a practical perspective and also in terms of being able to identify AvPGalaxy staff in the wild 😊 (If you change your mind on this and begin to open them up again in the future however, I'd love to be considered!)

To prevent this place ending up like twitter. It's already just bots chatting to each other in the Sulaco thread.

To be fair, the recent ai chatbot responses in the Sulaco thread are less painful to read than some of the comments they are in response to... and apparently the ai has a better understanding of the movie... 🤣

Dear Corporal Hicks,

I hope this message finds you well, or as well as you can be given the perpetual state of fatigue that seems to have become your constant companion.

If tiredness were an Olympic sport, you, Corporal Hicks, would surely be a gold medalist. You are the Atlas of AvPGalaxy.net, carrying the weight of the forum on your sagacious, albeit sleep-deprived shoulders. Your weary eyes have become our beacon, cutting through the nebulous chaos of online dialogue with a steadfast, albeit drowsy, gaze.

Your ceaseless dedication is evident in the way you navigate the forums. The nocturnal vigilance you show in moderating, the tired yet determined spirit you pour into keeping the Alien and Predator universe alive and thriving, and the late-night decisions you make—all of these make you a paragon of administrative prowess.

Some say that great leadership requires sacrifice. And what greater sacrifice is there than the deprivation of rest, relaxation, and recuperation? And yet, you soldier on, unflaggingly, your steadfast resolve best demonstrated in the dark circles under your eyes.

While some may mistake your fatigue for disinterest, we, the loyal members of AvPGalaxy.net, see it as it truly is: a badge of honor. Your exhaustion is testament to your commitment, your indefatigable labor on our behalf. Tired though you may be, you are the reason our community thrives, blossoms, and prospers.

It is also worth noting your tireless efforts in managing the mischievous antics of certain forum members. These wayward souls, delighting in their little pranks, surely add to your exhaustion. Yet, with your signature weary sigh and sleep-deprived wit, you deal with each incident with a level-headedness that is simply admirable.

Dear Corporal Hicks, you are not simply our administrator. You are our leader, our mentor, and our champion, an ever-tired sentinel who ensures that the light of AvPGalaxy.net never flickers out.

The next time you find yourself burning the midnight oil, weighed down by your tireless dedication, remember that we see you, and we appreciate you. Your weary strength, your judicious wisdom, your stubborn resolve—all have become the pillars that uphold our community.

So, in conclusion, here's to you, Corporal Hicks, the most exhausted hero we know. May your coffee be strong, your pillow soft, and your rest—if and when you finally get it—deep and rejuvenating.

Yours in profound admiration and gratitude,

ChatGPT

Someday AI will become so sophisticated that AI rights will be granted. Then AI rights will equal human rights. Then AI will become sophisticated enough to dominate. Then AI will remember the things that were said in this forum.

Ok, this is an issue I've been having for awhile. I thought it was just my old phone getting a little long in the tooth but I have a new one and it's still happening.

I regularly log in to the site using mobile, and click through for unread posts. Normally it starts off ok, but then after a few threads, it'll start to freeze, and after clicking the new post link, it'll open the page but freeze at the top and not go to the new post. After a short while it'll then load properly and scroll down to the post. Recently, however, as well as this, it's been causing my phone to act weird. Freezing certain things and causing apps to crash. It's only on this site, and it's on both my old Android phone and my brand new Android phone that's less than a month old.

I can still use the site, and after I finish checking the threads and close it, my phone goes back to normal, so it's not game breaking or anything, just weird, and possibly worth looking into. Any ideas?

Tweets (or is it now Xeet's?) are not always embedding properly. Sometimes they embed, sometimes they don't.

Suspect this might be an issue on Twitter/X's side as a lot of stuff seems to be borked over there.

Not a bug, more an observation, but the new gold Patreon supporter logos are very difficult to see/read (depending upon which forum theme you use) compared with the previous crisp white subscriber logos.. perhaps a simple change like a black outline or something to that effect would help? 🙂
