Still Collating...

It seems the behind the scenes material releases aren’t slowing down, not one bit! This time around, we’re getting a breakdown of some of the VFX shots that were used in Alien: Romulus. The VFX studio, Image Engine, has released on Vimeo a Reel of how certain shots were enhanced with some stellar CGI. The production VFX supervisor was Eric Barba with the production VFX producer being Annemarie Griggs, and the image engine VFX supervisor was Robin Hackl with the image engine VFX producer being Tyler Weiss.

Get a look behind the scenes in our VFX breakdown reel to see how Image Engine created some of the gruesome moments in Alien: Romulus. We need to give a hand to our crew for bringing 20 shots to life in this iconic sci-fi horror film.

More information about them can be found out on their site. The video highlights their work on the mutating rodent, the tail coming out of the cocoon and the acid eating through Bjorn’s flesh during his attack sequence. In the video and on their site, you can see what was provided (practical FX and makeup) which was used as a base to be enhanced with CGI. As many in the VFX industry know, a practical and detailed FX reference exponentially increases the quality of the overlaying CGI enhancements which are extremely labor intensive, leading to the best possible final results. It was surprising to find out that the static tail barb sticking out of the cocoon had no practical tail barb reference in that shot at all, seemingly completely done in CGI, yet looking extremely realistic in that still shot in particular. We’ll be on the lookout for more VFX breakdown shots in the future.

I never really noticed that a chestbuster would be popping out at the end (I guess they left that to the imagination). I suppose passively that face hugger "in da wota" gave him all its seed.

Facehugger never landed on Bjorn. I believe it's just the last beats of his heart making the movments at the end there.

There, only Tyler had the tube inserted for a couple of seconds, but Bjorn was not, he fought back

There's no chestburster, the acid hit his heart.
