Tom Woodruff Talks VFX Collaboration on Skulls/Predator 5! (Read 4,749 times)

Alien vs. Predator Galaxy recently had the opportunity to be joined once again on our podcast by the amazing Tom Woodruff Jr. Though the episode is primarily about performing inside the Alien suit, while talking about collaboration between director and the VFX teams Tom did tell us a little about his experience with collaborating with the VFX team when working on Skulls and how that competitiveness between digital and practical VFX teams has changed.

We just finished this movie Skulls. I can’t tell you what it’s about. We actually had VFX guys that came up and said “hi, welcome to the laziest VFX guys you’ll ever meet.” I went “what do you mean?” and he goes “look, tell us what you need from us rather than us coming in and saying ‘we can do that shot.'” It was such a great cohabitation with these guys, that we’re all working on the same thing together and nobodies trying to cart out a piece for themselves. So that’s changed. That’s certainly changed over the years.

The full episode itself is currently scheduled to go live tomorrow – November 12th – at 3pm GMT! Make sure you check back in with Alien vs. Predator Galaxy to listen or watch it when it drops! Tom, along with his partner Alec, have joined us on the podcast several times over the years.

If you’re looking for something to keep you entertained while waiting for our new interview, why not check out our previous chats? Alec and Tom joined us for Alien Day to talk about the series over all, and Alec also spoke to us after the release of The Predator to talk about their own on ADI’s first solo Predator film!

AvP Gods, let this film blow The Predator out of the water!

That sounds like a great environment to blend practical and digital.

Kailem

Great to hear that. It sounds like the exact opposite of the experience Tom and Alec talked about when they did The Thing.

Definitely a good indicator that practical effects will be taking centre stage with the CGI serving to support them, just the way we like it! ;D

No. ADI sucks at predator designs. They have all been shit fan fiction designs. Gaudy impractical weapons and hilarious faces. They make dog shit mandibles that never close properly. Wolf is the only half way decent one and even his face looks like shit

Was wondering how long that would take!

Hey... fourth time's the charm?

Right?

Right?

the way they're talking about it and keeping it "hush hush" it sounds like20th is still undecided on whether to market the movie as

SKULLS
or as
PREDATOR 5

In order to preserve the predator presence as a spoiler.

Sure would be nice if we fans could just keep our lips sealed regarding the Predator presence in the film when talking about it to friends, etc.
Just do a little gentleman's agreement...

Depends on what the trailer do.

They seemed to have given up on the numbering since Predator 2, so perhaps the decision is Skulls or the like ...versus.... Predator: Skulls or the like. (I so really want it to be the former.)

Even if fans don't keep their lips sealed though, plenty of the general pop will still go into it blind ala Prometheus if marketing keeps the Predator aspect hidden. They'll read the synopsis on Hulu (assumingly) looking for something new to watch and think hmm, this sounds interesting, and Voilà!

You know information is scarce, when a two-liner makes it to the front page :-D Glad to hear they are trying to make it practical instead of going full cg right from the start. Now lets just hope the studio won't pull "a thing" on them and paint everything over in post...

the like being "Hunter" vs "Predator: Hunter" or any of the other titles this film was rumored to have. :)
