Don't really know what if anything new Riddlez would have to say. I wish someone would actually ask Sigourney some interesting questions -- set troubles on A3, etc. Won't happen, though.

I liked the Vault. Was a very good read.

But yeah - there's only so many times you can say the same thing about Alien. The blurb does say Alien franchise so hopefully, it's a look at all the films.

I'm gonna try and get more info from Titan.

I'm certainly not complaining if it's by Mark Salisbury even if it reveals nothing particularly new. The less I say about that Alien Vault book the better in terms of accurate information

I seriously hope this encompasses all the Alien films. It would be great to have more info and pics on 2-4... not that i don't love the 1st, but i have plenty of books just on that one already.
Pictures of all the aliens would be great as accurate reference for my drawings!  ;D ;D ;D

Unless it has some really neat unseen stuff, $45 is too rich for my blood, especially given how much the Datk Horse reboot will cost at a likely $3.99 per issue. We'll see though!

And if you plan on preordering it and want it ASAP, better do it now. Amazon will honor any lower price between now and release if you already have it preordered.

I'm not sure myself if I'm going to be getting it, but it is very tempting. Will wait and see...

That's why I made sure to pre-order it right away. :)

Amazon's pre-order policy is really foolproof. You can cancel it at any time, you pay only when it ships, and you get it at the lowest price between the moment you place the pre-order and when it ships (no matter how much the price fluctuates). There's really no drawback to preordering.

It is possible that an unreleased Giger interview is included.  I once owned a set of the works of Mark Twain that was signed by him but published after his death. He had signed the flyleafs in anticipation of the edition being published.

Guess we'll see when it comes out. ;)

well, the Ash head is amongst the previously released continuity polaroids. Well at least the six limbed alien sketch is new or at least it's a piece of Alien Resurrection concept art sketch that ADI didn't release recently.

Looks as if more than one seller are making claims about it having a Giger interview
Unless someone can say he wasn't interviewed for this I suppose Giger could have been interviewed in the last year before his death or they found an old unpublished interview,.

well, some sort of photo from the blu-ray or DVD set rather than specifically continuity polaroids.

I really hope this does go into some depth on the later films, as the blurb claims. Just because they aren't as good as the first two doesn't mean I'm any less interested in the behind the scenes story, but they always seem to get sidelined in favour of Alien and Aliens.

I'd even go as far to say that of all the retrospective looks at the franchise, that Aliens is often left out a bit more now too. Not as much as Alien 3 and Resurrection are, but everyone has gone crazy for the original Alien more lately. Probably partly to do with Sir Ridley Scott returning to the franchise a few years ago, as well as the recent build up and good word of mouth for Alien: Isolation.

I would love both an ALIENS Vault and an ALIEN 3 Vault. Hopefully we'll see them someday.

Anyway this book is simple stunning, the pictures and artwork are gorgeous. I don't have the time to sit down and read it right now but from the looks of it it will be a fascinating read.

Book seems great so far, lots of images I've never seen. Pretty glaring error about the patches though on page 39. Whoever wrote the text there seems to think the patches for Aliens were unused designs from the first film.

They were not. Those patches are designs from "Aliens," not "Alien." USCM was never even concept until Aliens. This should have been obvious to whoever was writing the book. It seems that Mark Salisbury only did the interviews.

Bought a copy of the book today, it's available in central London in Forbidden Planet and the Cinema Store. It's a very nice coffee table book.

Wel, quite honestly it's not the ultimate guide, it's a book filled with nice images but not the last words on the movies and as we have seen, there are some misplaced things.

Saw this at Dymocks,a large book profusely illustrated with images-mostly from the photo archives available on Blu Ray,with some new stuff added-bit of a let-down.At least they did dedicate the book to HR Giger.

Yes, it seem like a pity as much as that

Got mine from Amazon today....£22 so can't grumble about that.

More impressed than I was with the Vault, I didn't expect a load of unseen Alien 79 photos as the book of Alien, the special effects guide, etc are pretty packed to the gills with photos.

For £22, no qualms at all about recommending it. It's nice and chunky and I'm sure that there's stuff in there you haven't seen before.

(I also ordered Harry Potter from Page to screen as part of the order which also came today....now that is a monster! glorious making of book!)

So, had the book for a few days now.  Sad to say it is a bit of a let down.  There's almost nothing in here that Alien fans haven't seen before.  The publishers press release on Amazon stated that the book would have new interviews with Giger amd Scott,  this is not the case,  only Weaver is interviewed.  Once you get over the initial size of it and start flicking you quickly realise you've seen it all before.
I was really hoping it would be as in depth as the recent Star Wars making of books by JW Rinzler,  it's not even close.  There's literally nothing in the text that you won't have read before or watched in docs. I reckon it's going back to Amazon as a return.  For me it's as disappointing as the Alien vault release.

Yeah, I can see why people are disappointed. Perhaps the Ridley interview fell through between the press release and we don't even know if the Giger interview took place.

But I knew that with the page count, it was unlikely to be anywhere near as brilliant as the Rinzler Star Wars books (which are fantastic) and we have been rather spoiled with the Blu ray special features which are incredibly comprehensive.

But for £22, I'm happy with it, ff you are not sure, wait for the youtube reviews or till you can flick through in store.  :)

Best bet, save yourself the cash and wait for it to turn up at the public library.I would love to see a in-depth volume on each film-like the Rinzler making-of original trilogy books. That would have been a worthy celebration of the 35th anniversary instead of this.

My copy arrived while I was away last week, but I haven't had a chance to have more than a cursory glance at it so far.

Even so, I still noticed the errant picture of an Alien 3 W-Y commando in amongst the Resurrection pages.

Sorry for going off topic, but are there any news on The Weyland-Yutani Report? A release date, maybe?

I don't mean the very expensive one, from sideshow collectibles.

I have been checking Amazon UK every day and nothing shows up. Wasn't it supposed to come out before Christmas?

Thanks

Im on the fence with it. It looks like the ultimate Alien book, with all the info and great photos and layout in one place as one book, even if we already know everything thats written in it (kind of like Terminator Vault, its everything diehards know for a long time, but its a nicely designed piece that gathers it all), but it does include resurrection and I made big effort over the years not to own anything that includes that...thing. I bought Alien movies as separate pieces, not as quadrilogy so I wouldnt own resurrection, even if I lost of another disc of extras. I didnt buy Alien Vault because at the end it included Resurrection and had relatively brief writeup on it. I do not own any Aliens comic books released after Resurection. Theres many examples like that but I hate Resurrection more than any movie ever made in history because for me the alien trilogy was  just beautiful, complete perfection (again, imo), and not only resurection ruins it, but its an idiotic mockery. Anyway, Archive looks like a great set to have but since Resurrection's in it, Im not sure

Okay, this may seem odd...

Did anyone else receive a copy with the dustjacket mis-aligned? Normally, the publisher's name should be in the dead center of the spine, but on my copy it's way off to the right. I'm thinking it might drive me crazy every time I see it on my shelf like that. I wonder if I can re-fold it...  ???

On the inside flaps (front usually has snyopsis of book, the back flap author info) are they equal length? If one is longer then the other its possible the jackets were not placed on the binding correct. If they are even and the book spine is at the center of the dust jacket...its a printing error. You may be able to center it even if the title is misaligned. But the inside flaps won't be even or a crease from the original placement may be visible.

They are on mine. Must be a misprint. Unless the dust covers were trimmed incorrectly.

The lengths appear different, so on mine it might be an issue with the jacket alignment during production. Regardless, I'm finding an awful lot of manufacturing errors on Titan Book publications recently...  :-\

Nice cover art, but it's not like I'm going to buy it again.

The book's chock full of nice images, but the actual behind the scenes information contained in it is pretty sparse.

This is sparse? You should see the Robocop Book Titan put out. Great photos, but I really did a double-take when I got it. I think there's probably a movie magazine out there with more info, lol.

Mine arrived today. A big, heavy, sexy book. That newly printed smell is intoxicating. Glancing through it's chocked full of photos and illustrations. Many new to me. Particularly interested in Vincent Wards medieval wooden planet stuff from Alien 3. Going to curl up with it tonight in bed with a cup of hot chocolate and window open.

If you click on reviews there is a 3 minute clip of one of the reviewers going thru the book a page at a time from cover to cover. I found this helpful as I've not been able to get to Barnes & Noble to see it in person.

Got my book a few days ago.  It is a very nice volume though as has been mentioned, mostly stuff that we've all seen before.  Its nice to get all the Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection stuff in one volume that you can hold in your hands and look at.  I was never going to reopen the Blu-ray vault images of the wooden planet again for example.  That wooden planet idea was one crazy brain-storm though so compelling.  I still find myself thinking how one might make a wooden space-ship work.

My copy arrived at the end of last week. I've read up until the end of Alien 3 so far. By and large there's not much we didn't already know - which I think is going to be the case - but it's an attractive book. It's nice to have all four films together in one book but I just feel like there's much more they could fit in here. I still think we need proper in-depth books for the individual films.

I've seen a couple of nuggets I hadn't seen before such as the Derelict model in Aliens wasn't actually the original. How I'd thought it was the one from Bob Burns collection but this book is claiming it was an original model built based off Giger's old designs. I'm pretty sure this is wrong...?

Archive also talked about Fincher having an epic story idea for Alien 3 including lots of Aliens. I hadn't seen that before.

Some of the concept art for Ward's version I hadn't seen before which was nice as it's Alien 3 I'm always interested to see more of.

Some errors are starting to bug me though - general spelling errors, Dylan instead of Dillion, things like that.

The Resurrection section seems to be the worst offender. Clearly someone thought the third and fourth films were actually one and the same because there are three or four pics from Alien 3 erroneously mixed up in there.

I finally finished this book the other night and read the Alien Resurrection section. A few errors in here which I've passed along. But I oddly enjoyed reading it. I hadn't been in a rush to read the last section because well...Resurrection. However, I found myself enjoying it and getting along with the information. Of all of the films AR is probably the way I retain the least information of but I'm very tempted to rewatch the special features on the Anthology now.

It does feel like Mark Salisbury put less effort into this section though - only a page looking at the design for the Alien, the errors. Felt very phoned in.

Over all, I enjoyed the book. It was nothing ground breaking, nothing that you couldn't get from Charles' wonderful documentaries. But if you'd rather have read than watched, then there's nothing wrong with the book. It's certainly an attractive package but nothing worth bending over for.

I actually enjoyed the AR features virtually as much as those for the other films, even though the movie itself isn't anything like as good. Sylvain Despretz in particular gives some interesting commentary. He certainly doesn't hide the fact that he dislikes how devolved the original Alien creature design had become by that point. I think one of the Enhancement Pods is just him talking about how shit the Resurrection Aliens were compared to the preceding ones (although he puts it slightly more eloquently than that :) )

I very rarely watch anything to do with it. It's just my bias coming through but I'm going to give the features a go soon. The book was really interesting and it was strange seeing Pierre say just how much control he had over the film and yet, whilst I love his films I dislike how this one turned up. Makes me curious to go back and see just how it was made.
