Pros and Cons of Blomkamp films influencing Alien 5

Pro:

1) Excellent directing of action scenes and "world creation".

2) Ability to attract A list actors to his films.

3) Very good eye for special effects work.

Con:

1) bad at writing yet insists on writing his own scripts.

2) gets carried away with "concepts" and loses focus on creating decent characters.

3) each film he's made has been worse then the last.

Summed it up damn well. Plus Blomkamp seems to be one sadistic director, this movie will probably rock if he hires a decent writer.

Weyland-Yutani should be monolithic and amoral, yet make a token effort at keeping up the appearance of caring.  Kinda like how Burke started off as "an okay guy" until Ripley started to dig.

I just saw it [Chappie] and I really liked it.  Its his second best film and it has given me more confidence in his ability to create Alien 5

I think I haven't read anywhere here yet about the portrayal of "The Company" in Chappie.  Blomkamp struck the perfect balance of characteristics which the company had to make it evil, yet not evil.  There were no evil motivations in the company.  They were behaving like every corporation out there, and yet they were evil.

Yeah, that surprised me. I'd disagree that the company was evil, though. Weaver's character was literally saying, "Hey, we've got a good thing here, don't screw it up." Leagues better  - and more understandable - than Jodie Foster's portrayal. Am hoping this is the angle which is stuck with: Opportunists just doing the sensible thing and trying to make a profit.

The only thing I didn't understand was that the 'Moose' was being pitched to police, instead of militaries, even though the film early pointed out the company was attracting and courting much military interest. It didn't destroy the film's entertainment value, at all, but it did perplex me.

Regardless, I'm hoping that the clean documentary style isn't a part of this. Remove that and this is a project I'm actually looking forward to now.

The "hybrid" element of Alien: Resurrection is very similar to District 9.  I think we will get a reinterpretation of some of the ideas Alien: Resurrection except that they will be shot "documentary style" for the first half of the film.

As a con, hmmm, well sometimes his films get a bit too gross.  I just couldn't stand the squalor and grossness of D9 but I guess it was par for the course.

That stroke me too! Has it been more balanced in ambiance tone, inter-cutting clean and dirty sceneries, I'd appreciate it better. Elysium has the balance in that relation.

My two cents to Pros: Neill knows how to engage audience from the very beginning/opening titles
to Cons: Ending might not live up to the promised intense narration and wrap up generically, third act is his weak spot.

Just to be clear, I made the list of Blomkamp's pro's and con's before I saw Chappie.  Although I personally like it, Chappie is getting destroyed by the critics and is under performing at the box office.

Pros:

1) Has interesting conceptual ideas.
2) Works with WETA.


Cons:

1) Bad at directing (has nothing that makes him stand apart beside his sci-fi universe, I couldn't tell it's a film from him if he ever do a middle age comedy, he looks like the average common director while I could easily spot a Kubrick's film).
2) Bad at writing.
3) Always over-think with VFX & SFX giving very poor photographic shot.
4) Never develop anything giving almost no substance to think about after beside story holes.
5) Too action orientated for an Alien film (again).
6) ala Ridley Scott, he'll likely make an "epic scale" alien film speaking about origins, further bio-weapons theory and blablabla which I don't want to. I don't get it why they never tried to go small again for the Alien licences and always had to try to make it look bigger, larger and more epic.

If you're talking about the snake creature in the art, that's essentially Hammerpede concept art from Doug Williams.

I think this cinematic device of Blomkamp's was already quite tired by the time Chappie rolled around.  He was doing these "interviews" at the beginning which made me go, aw no, not again...

I consider Prometheus to be part of the Aliens series and there was a bit of documentary-style use of the astronauts' cameras.  It didn't go beyond this.  Also, we got to see some footage from the helmet-cams in Aliens.  So the documentary-style is not totally alien to the Aliens universe.  But this was not even close to the documentary style of Blomkamp.
