Title: Archie Comics & Dark Horse Comics Announce Archie vs. Predator 2
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Apr 02, 2019, 09:35:35 PM

The list of potential adversaries for the Predator is not small! He’s faced some serious contenders including Batman, Superman, and Alien (of course). Back in 2015 He also had a run in with in with Riverdale’s Archie. And now he’s back for more!

The second Archie vs. Predator mini will follow on directly from the first — and those who've read the original know just how unlikely that might be. "All I'm going to say is that it's a meta-commentary on corporate franchise reboots, given that Archie was rebooted right after [the first Archie vs. Predator] was released, and the Predator franchise got its reboot with last year's The Predator film," de Campi said.

"As usual with my work, you'll be able to read it as that if you want to, but it's mostly going to be a lot of teenagers dying in increasingly creative and sudden ways, and also jokes. Entertaining the reader comes first. The other stuff, the formalist obstacle course I set myself, I do because it entertains me."

She went on, "I think as anyone who read the first AvP knows, I'm a huge fan of both franchises, and it's massively important to me that both Archie and Predator fans feel like I'm handling their babies with love and respect and knowledge. My goal is always to deliver a great Archie comic — with the humor, teen drama and romance we love from Riverdale's finest — as well as a great Predator comic, with the scares and violence you want from the galaxy's most dangerous hunters."

Alex de Campi is returning to pen the sequel to her original series, with Robert Hack of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fame stepping in to provide art. The first issue is due to drop on the 24th of July. Thanks to Nick Whitcomb for the link.

I never actually read the first one but considering how much I've warmed up to the DC crossovers, I think I'm going to have to give it a go.

Never read the first series. Is it worth reading?

Yes, absolutely. It's a ton of fun; it's drawn by one of the in-house Archie artists so it's got that art style, but it's gory as heck. I think Archie vs The Punisher gets a sly shout-out at one point, too.

For some reason the first series is hard to get hands on. Looks like a new TPB will be released in September though.

Didn't feel like we needed a spoiler thread but in the sea of Alien content (Fox knows it has other franchises right?) the issue was a solid B+.

It's not perfect but it's only a few minor points that drop it but it's not bad. It is also a sequel but I'm not sure why it needed to be just yet since they could've just done it and got a new group for the body count. It's not going to make it unreadable, it just seems odd they even went in that direction.

Also why is everybody the Assassin when it's explicitly a one off? Shouldn't they all be referencing Fugitive?

Feel free to mention specifics, just do it using the spoiler tag so people can choose to look at it. It's the little nuclear logo when replying.

While I got a bit of time I'll just post some spoilers for those interested. Still a B+.

Spoiler
For those curious, it is indeed a sequel to Archie Versus Predator. It picks up a short while after the events of the first series with the Predator of that story having been converted into the new Archie (he still acts like the Predator of that series though and still speaks as he did in emojis). They all try to leave but there's a joke about the Mark Waid Archie book with it leaving them wondering if they're cancelled and given the original was a limited series I'm not sure how that makes sense..., or is Predator supposed to be canon to Archie? Granted some of the show's cast want Predator on Riverdale and I don't blame them but that's besides the point.

Eventually they end up in reboot Riverdale with a brand new cast to kill off and Dilton (I think?) has a Predator mask which somehow gets the attention of the other Predators. I'm not sure if it's native to this continuity or if it's supposed to belong to PredArchie but considering they comment about PredArchie not wanting to go home and the others find out through the helmet, it seems he doesn't want these guys to know he's here. It's also mentioned that PredArchie's transformation is temporary and that he'll eventually turn back into his normal self

Overall a lot of this is setup but considering that we have a fresh new Riverdale cast (including an Archie, Betty, and Veronica) I feel like this could've been it's own thing. But then again it is the first issue and it's setting the stage so I'm not as worried about it. As an aside, PredArchie is also indifferent towards "cancellation" which is somewhat funny considering despite The Predator's reception the franchise got this, two video games coming, and a series of toys. I can understand why he'd feel indifferent towards it. There's also a oke about the other Betty mistaking the Predator helmet for a Phasma mask. I'm not 100% sure if that's a joke about Disney owning Fox so they can make that joke now but I like it. All the other Predators however are modeled on the Assassin Predator, they just walk plantigrade and some have helmets. I feel like they should be modeled more on Fugitive considering Assassin was a one off. However as much of a distraction as it is, it's fine.

I know it's "just" Archie vs Predator, but

Spoiler
I sure hope the Assassin does not become the blueprint for our favorite space hunter in the future.

I definitely laughed when Dilton pulled out the Predator mask and Betty asked if he was going as Captain Phasma lol!

Pretty sure they're just poking fun at "The Predator" so don't worry.

I got it.
I happened to be walking through my (semi) local comic shop and it was displayed on the rack proudly. I asked about the physical issues of Archie Versus Predator and it turns out they don't have any outside the single trade left of the first one. Curious about it I looked to Comichron for how well it's doing and it's estimated to be about 17,000 units (not counting digital sales but it can't be that much higher). Sure that's for the first issue and there will be a slump as it goes on, but that doesn't seem bad for Darkhorse especially seeing as it's a mini. It's one of the top selling Darkhorse titles for the month according to the site just beaten out by another Darkhorse crossover with DC.

Ya 17,000 is pretty high. Most Aliens and Predator comics sell between 10,000-15,000 copies per issue.

Issue 2 was a hoot. Robert Hack does a great job drawing predators. The hyper violence mixed with the campy dialogue keeps me laughing throughout. Really enjoying this one.
