Collects the original trilogy in paperback. Releasing in November.
Looks like the same thing is being done for the original predator comics as well.
Feels a little soon to me. Feels like they only just released the fancy pants hardbacks. Unless maybe this is a collected softback of them all? I know the hardbacks got a little hard to find.
Yeah. It's all 3 original series. It's normal for TPB to be released a while after hardcover when it comes to comic collected editions.
So this the original versions together or the Billie/Wilks universe?
Looks to be the Hicks/Newt version.
QuoteIn this first volume is the initial Aliens trilogy--Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum, and Earth War, in which Hicks and Newt--and eventually Ripley--join forces to battle an infestation of Aliens both on Earth and in the wider galaxy (all of these stories were written before the film Alien3 chronicled the deaths of the heroes of Aliens).

The cover is nice enough. I do love Bolton's covers for Earth War/Female War.
Still no love for Countdown by Dark Horse lol
Given I own the original Outbreak TPB and recently released fancy pants (TM) hardback of Nightmare Asylum & Earth War, I might given this one a miss though I'm curious when they release volume 2 ...
My biggest criticism of the Ominbus editions was their physical size. I know they crammed a lot into them but they should be big as the artwork deserves to be printed on large format (well in most cases).

Wasn't there some issue with the quality of the original artwork or something like that? By that I mean the actual physical quality of DB's artwork not the artistic merit (which is undoubted).
No idea. I've never seen a physical printed copy - only online.

I remember reading the second part of Countdown and the artwork seemed fantastic to me printed. from what I remembered anyway
I have part 2, its in an Alien Magazine issue (vol.2#10 i think). The oversized format of the magazine was magical when paired with Den Beauvais' art. I do wish it was in color though.
However i learned the hard way that the first part was actually a seperate mini issue originally sold with issue vol.2#9. I have yet to find a copy of the part one mini comic :'(
I have emailed DH detailing how disappointed I was that it wasn't included with the Fancy Pants Hardcover. I did get a very nice reply from them though, ill see if I can find and post it.
Edit: found it

That's a pretty cool response.
How long ago was that?
It was not long after i found out that countdown wouldnt be included with the Hardcover of book 2&3.
March 27 2017.
Least you had a response. which is always a plus. Hopefully in future they'll do something with it.
That's annoying about part 1 of Countdown mind. why do it one way for part 1 and then another way for part 2?
Yeah i was glad for a response, its never happened before or since.
My email was really more praise and positive than negative. I did say i was disappointed that it wasnt in the hardcover and that I would love to see it restored and released officially.
Also i should say that i got response on march 27, i sent the email in jan or February i think.
Coming out this week.
On the fence whether to get it.

Similar. I own the original Trades, Omnibus Volume 1 + the new fancy pants Hardcover versions so not sure if this is worth it unless it brings something else to the playground.
I had a flick through this in the comic store. Looks like a coloured version of the Hicks & Newt version of Book One. Couldn't tell if it was a new colouring or not, though.
Did you notice if it included the page from book 2 that was not in the fancy pants release? The one of Spears looking at the Xeno in the cylinder.

The `Perfection' panel which DB actually did in 96' ... I hope it does.
That's the one
Sorry, didn't think to check.

Wouldn't have thought so - they managed to blow it up to magazine size for the
Aliens magazine reprint and it looked fine.
I did hear they lost the original masters somewhere along the line, which is why it hasn't been collected since. How true that is...

Same thing happened to me. I ended up buying another copy of #9 that came with the mini-comic included.
These guys are top tier,
seems the appropriate place.

Can confirm it does.
Picked this up for myself today. I think it's the same digital colouring but it just looks better for some reason. Maybe a different printing process? It certainly looks better than it does in Omnibus #1.

I had a look at it today in my local comic shop. I appreciated the regular size of the pages - something that always annoyed me about the original omnibus editions. That said I own the original release book 1 trade, the fancy pants Book 2 hardcover in recent years and also the original omnibus... I'm still not convinced I need this version. Think I might go buy that 30th Anniversary Book 1 hardcover if I can find it online instead.
Do Darkhorse plan on releasing more volumes like this though?
More are planned!

Brilliant! That's great news. Now what to do with my old Omnibus editions ... ???
Keep 'em.
The Essential Comics won't include everything I reckon.
Yeah, I'd be surprised to see them include as much as the Omnibus do. Honestly, though, I'm interested in these so I can have the others in the larger format.
"Essential" implies a selection whereas "Omnibus" implies all (even thought it wasn't lol).
Im going to take a guess on whats going to be included on Volume 2 and say: Genocide, Rogue, Backsplash and Labyrinth
I will guess that the next Aliens Essential Comics will include Genocide, Harvest and Rogue. Maybe Labyrinth instead of Harvest. And if that's not long enough maybe Music of the Spears as well.
What are all of your favourite Omnisbuses out of Alien, Predator and AVP ones?
Aliens Omnibus 3, Predator Omnibus 1 and AVP Omnibus 1.

Cool i have Aliens omnibus 1,3,6. Avp omnibus 1 but i missed out on Predator omnibus 1 so have ordered the essential Predator comics vol 1, looking forward to it, i used to own the concrete jungle tpb years ago.
Never needed the omnibus editions as I have all of the single issues and multiple editions of the tpb's.
AVP Omnibus Volume 2 is also a favorite of mine.

Currently re-reading this one right now. Just finished Genocide.
My "Predator Essential Comics Vol 1" arrived today. Really nice print, the colours pop!
Also included which I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is the "Predator 2" comic adaptation of the movie. I never even knew this existed! I know Predator 2 the movie was inspired by the Concrete Jungle comic series but I never knew they then adapted the movie back into a comic. Looking forward to checking this out!
That seems like an odd inclusion.
It also makes it the only adaptation from the series to be collected in a trade like this.
Also according to the ads in the back they are doing the Essential AVP comics next, but that was to be expected.
I'm still waiting on my original art hardback edition. :'(
The Omnibus collections are out-of-print, aren't they? So it makes sense that they're doing some reprints.
Yeah. I think they have been for a while. My only fear is that the reprints aren't going to be as comprehensive as those omnibus. Even if they didn't collect everything, they still had a lot!

Yeah the shorts and one offs are missing from the Predator Essentials but on the plus side there's still loads of material and the print is bigger and higher quality.
It'll be interesting to see how they progress going forward. Seems like they are doing the limited hard back oversized collectors editions and then moving to these essential collections. They also seem to be evenly rotating the releases so far going: Alien, then Predator then AVP
Quote from: T Dog on Feb 10, 2019, 12:58:40 PMThey also seem to be evenly rotating the releases so far going: Alien, then Predator then AVP
I believe the Omnibus collections were done the same way.
Side note: anybody read The Terminator omnibus?
I have Aliens Omnibus 1 but would it be worth picking up Essentials 1 now before it goes out of print?
Bigger pages, better print and the original names right?
If you're looking to get the Dark Horse one before it is gone then yeah, probably. It is worth noting though, that Marvel also mentioned reprints in their press release yesterday, so I wouldn't be shocked to see "Epic Collection" releases of all of the DH stuff like they've been doing with DH's Star Wars comics.
Imagine if Marvel somehow reprinted Countdown lol
Does anyone know how long it took for the Dark Horse Star Wars graphic novels to go out of print?

lol Agreed!
I don't think it'd have been so bad if they'd actually changed all the film names.

Fuuuuuu....... Damn I hoped they would been as they had release date of august 25, the volume 1 was great, such a disapointment to hear. Oh well I have pretty much else brought all dark horse comics and their last omnibious collection, quite the collection none the less.
