Here's all the pieces of information we've learnt from Obsidian:
Well, we won't be including aliens wearing Colonial Marine armor and using smartguns. We also won't have a plot that involves a crazy musician trying to record the sound of an alien feasting for his magnum opus.
Jason Keeney and I agree that 30 fps is the minimum acceptable framerate for this game.
Predators won't be in our game. Our game only covers the Alien(s) license.
Sounds interesting.. But ive got a question, Do players play as the Alien species, or people. Maybe both?
No answer yet. I think both would be awesome though.
No Predators! About time we had something different! I am fairly excited about this game, yes I am!
Yeah. I'm rather happy they didn't include Predators.
"One thing that I want to state is that while this game needs to have things that make it recognizably an RPG, I think there are some RPG conventions that would feel/seem really corny in the relatively realistic Alien setting.
For whatever reason, slapping mithril ingots and gems onto a workbench and making a dragon slaying sword doesn't jar most people in fantasy RPGs, but doing the same thing to get an upgraded pulse rifle or a brand new type of weapon seems kind of goofy in the Alien context.
Anyway, I do think there are ways to approach item creation or upgrading in a way that seems plausible and fitting for the setting without feeling like RPG Convention #12."
Sounds like they're really thinking this through.
i am really wondering wat this game will turn out like... how will they turn the alien quadrilogy into an rpg? ripley dint really have a choice to fight the aliens, yet will we in this game? personally, i think it would work best if you played as an alien: it would probably make it more authentic and real.
It isn't using the NwN2 Electron-Aurora engine, it is Something Elseā¢.
Doesn't tell us much other than the game will be using a new engine.
My preference for RPGs is almost always for open-ended stories with few required critical path moments. I like worlds that are open for exploration but always offer a clear and viable "next step" to take in moving the story forward. It allows players to move at their own pace and in their own direction but gives them the ability to return to "the path" when they want to. My goal is to allow for freedom without being vague, direction without being restrictive. I hope that helps give an idea of what we are shooting for.
Said by J.E.Swayer, the lead developer.
sounds cool hope it turns out to be great
Another post on the Obsidian forums has been made by J.E. Sawyer (the lead developer), revealing some new info about the game.
Things are going pretty well, but please understand that we're still very early in development. The game is many months off and we're still doing a lot of prototyping/core technology development. The design staff is refining a lot of early work on the project right now. Chris Avellone is the Lead Creative Designer on the project and he has been helping develop our dialogue tool and banter system. We want something that feels "natural" in flow and delivery but still gives the player a great deal of control and good options to take relationships in different directions. Paul Boyle joined us a couple of months ago as our Lead System Designer. Paul previously worked at Maxis on Sims titles and on Spore. He's been working a lot with me on our core system designs. We have good arguments discussions on ideas and he has been building a top-down 2D prototype for our tactical combat systems which is giving us great data on interface and AI/pathing issues. It's also allowing us to do rapid iteration on the crunchy numerical aspects of the game. Finally, Mike Stout joined us from Insomniac as our Lead Level Designer. He worked on several Rachet & Clank titles and as the Lead Multiplayer Level Designer on Resistance: Fall of Man. Mike is working with the art team to develop our level pipeline and establish building metrics. He's also been doing research on different types of non-linear games to see how they handle various aspects of revealing areas, opening up quests, scaling difficulty, etc.

No predators!COOL now I'm realy looking forward to this game.but will there also have the hybrid for the aliens. It would be cool if you included the hybrids to the RPG.
The Aliens RPG is no longer one massive thread. It now has its own forum.

I'm not sure if this has been mention, but Obsidian said that this is going to be an "Action RPG"

Thank you, i couldn't find that damn pic.
soooo many things they could put in this game. If its an rpg and you get to play as an alien i would hope it doesnt become to repetitive, for example: Leave hive, immobolise possible host, bring back to hive, cocoon near egg, repeat. It would be cool if you had to scout out possible areas for a hive location, identify accesible areas of population to gather suitable hosts, maybe even have to adapt your alien physiology to suit changes in the environment such as atmospheric changes etc. So many things you could do with playing as an alien, especially in combat, although i love the AvP games, playing as an Alien was immensely cool but somewhat limited in how you could attack, claw swipe, tail whip, head bite. I'd like to see you stalk your prey, wait for the oppurtune moment to strike so as not to draw unwanted attention, having the choice to immobilise your prey for transporting back to the hive, or outright killing them if they posed a significant threat to the hive, maybe even calling for additional alien back up for difficult opponents etc...anybody agree?

This would be good. I would enjoy the ability to go in the water and jump out, tackling some unsespected guy and kill him. That would be fun. 8)

I didn't know Obsidian was working on this game. With work like Neverwinter Knights and Knights of the Old Republic under their belt, fans are in good hands.
Obsidian is great, KOTOR is a great series but i would've been happier had i heard that Squarsoft was making it, however unlikely that sounds.

Hot diggity, My favorite parts of the AVP games for PC was to be able to play as the alien. Doing it in an RPG would be awsome.

Both would be nice if possible. I'd love to play as a Marine where you raise certain skills (Explosives, Heavy Weaponry, etc.) but also playing the role of an Alien too (raising skills to evolve possibly).

I thought it had nothing to do with the quadrilogy.
I hope they don't try to tie it in with the films. I really do. *Painful flashbacks to Alien Trilogy*
On a somewhat lighter note, Obsidian did the Knights Of The Old Republic games, as earlier said, which are pretty good games. However, I hope this game doesn't play like that, it just doesn't seems to have the right pacing or style for an aliens game.
I agree with Cpl Hudson's earlier comments-- this would certainly make the best game. But, it would be best if they had playable marines as well. They've become a huge part of the franchise now, and without having them playable would be... shit.

The first is said to have been so, yeah. The second was awful. '
Neverwinter Nights 2', I have played and it gets boring and pointless to read all these weird statistics for weapons, without any explanation for what the letters and numbers mean.

i agree that style was good for KOTOR but in a alien(s) game it wouldn't feel right. i would like to start in a similar way to KOTOR as in starting as a face hugger and finding a host and play on from there
it would be cool if you could somehow be a scientist and like mix alien's DNA with whatever you want.Maybe like Roller Coaster Tycoon lol.THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.Im going straight for JAWS

Too much like AVP2
This game have a release date?
^2009. Maybe later! You know how game companies work! lol!
I just gotta say, I grew up playing games like Final Fantasy 7&8 etc. How are they going to make an RPG in the traditional sense like that? "You are now level 30 which means you can operate a Smartgun!!!" Nope.
Don't get me wrong, I'm as excited as any Alien fan would be. I just hope that it doesn't try to be anything like that cos it just wouldn't work period.
Can't f@cking wait though still.............
30 frames per second is kinda slow I hope it is better.

Aliens RPG game sound bit stupid to me. Is it like Final Fantays meets Aliens or Bioshock meet Aliens?
^ Nice sig
hello i hope that you will be able to play as the alien. and have gameplay similar to aliens vs predator extinction. they should not tie in to the movies. the alien should pop up randomly in some rural town and start attackinging innocents. thats my hopes for the game
not to be rude or anyhting, but i dont like RPGs too much. but i like the fact that the alien people are exprimenting with different genres.
it would be great if you could ply as an alien or a praetorian or queen and communicating to other aliens KOTOR RPG style.
I would say this game will be more like Mass Effect or Oblivion. It fits more in line with an action-rpg than something like the FF series.
Do you think the game will come out late 2008 now?
I have never been a fan of RPGs. I think I may make an exception for this game.
I hope we will see some info at E3 this year.

If they don't then they get no proper hype from people who aren't aware of the game
I can't wait for this game either, just like A:CM.
E3 is coming, fingers crossed we see something about it there.
Oh gosh... If this thing is anything like Mass Effect, I believe it will be unbearably awesome! I love that game and greatly enjoy it still.
However, I really hope you get to play as a marine. I believe it gives you greater flexibility and will allow for a better story and experience. I pray they allow a great deal of weaponry that is upgradeable. That will be a dream come true!
As for not including yautja, Im actually pleased with that. While I am a die hard Predator fan, AvP combo does limit what can happen. While it does allow new opportunities for great stories, it also constricts what can happen as well. Anywhat, I hope that in the future they make a Predator version of this as well that includes stuff aside from hunting humans and aliens. Gimme some other beasts! ;D
You play as marine.
... OH THANK FREAKING HEAVESN! ;D I dont want to sound like a jerk though, seeing as how a lot of people wanted to play as xenos.
Say, do you know if you can customize your character or get weapon upgrades/modifications?

Game Not Over: Obsidian Working on Aliens Game (http://www.talkxbox.com/article2701.html)
QuoteAdded 09/16/2008 by MonjiO
This news is hot off the Austin GDC floor so grab it while it's hot, readers. Obsidian Entertainment (developers for Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Alpha Protocol) are hard at work on an RPG using the Aliens license. The game is being written by the writer of Icewind Dale 2, among other games, and the tile will see a full unveiling later this year.
The game is in development on an engine developed by Obsdian and will feature real time squad based combat. We're in the process of lining up more extensive coverage, so expect to hear more about this as it develops.
Nice! I'm looking forward to it. Was it that what Pitchford was raving about?

GOD DAMN IT!
Aliens RPG uses FaceFx for facial customization.
Quote from: J.E aka Project DirectorOnyx uses FaceFX for facial customization. One thing we found with some other facial customization systems is that we disliked the "one size fits all" approach to adapting a head and skin texture to fit any given race. We use "ethnic heads" with strong features that are then manipulated using FaceFX sliders for facial morphing. We don't use tinting, but instead allow the player to pick an "average" "light" or "dark" skin tone for the character's ethnic group. Because we don't use tinting, we avoid the washed-out appearance that often accompanies such systems. And of course we support swapping out hairstyles. We use the same texture swapping system for hairstyles to avoid the look of a single hair texture that has to support hair ranging from black to light blonde. Hair textures have 8-bit alpha and blend to the mid-tone of an ethnic group skin tone, avoiding the harsh line that can be found in some systems. It probably goes without saying, but Onyx also supports changing eye colors.
Overall, I think the system produces very nice results. Special characters are not required to use the facial morphing system (though they can be assigned to do so in our editor). Their heads can be made directly in XSI without requiring any set-up for customization. While the facial customization system is very good, using it on all of the characters who surround you all of the time can start to look bad.
http://forums.obsidian.net/index.php?s=&showtopic=51658&view=findpost&p=921047Quote from: CrashGirlI don't know if you can or wil answer this, Josh, but I'll ask anyway:
Does facefx limit how badly you can screw up a face?
One of the things that makes facegen difficult is that most of its settings create really hideous monstrosities that bear no resemblance to a human face. It would be nice if facefx could limit the amount of damage that could be done to the base head model. It would make it easier to use. I mean there's no reason why a face generation system needs to allow you to move the eyes up into the forehead.
Also, in Bethesda's game, ambient light plays a huge role in the way you percieve the skin tones on the faces. What looks OK in one light, looks absolutely hideous in another. The only way I found to avoid it is to try to create the face in as close to a neuteral light as possible. But Bethesda's facegen opportunities only occur in places where the light is really extreme in one way or another.
So my wish would be to allow access to facefx at any time during the game, so I can make adjustments as I go along rather than having to labor to get it as close to tolerable as possible right at the start.
Quote from: J.EFaceFX's parameters are entirely within the control of how the rigger sets them up. So yes, it can limit your ability to screw things up. We have a randomize button in the engine that just randomly sets all of the sliders and it usually produces goofy faces, but doing it by hand can produce nice results.
Relying on an ambient value in the absence of lights will tend to make a face appear to lose all of its geometry and the diffuse texture to lose any dynamic range it appeared to have. This is especially true in the case of a face that relies heavily on normal and/or specular maps. We mitigate the negative effects of ambient lighting in our engine by using low-power character lights at all times. I can honestly say it's pretty rare that I get any of the characters into a situation where the default character lights don't give the characters' faces enough definition and the skin the appropriate tone range.
I presume Mass Effect uses FaceFX? Need to get a rough idea how it works.
Quote from: J.EYes, though we are applying it in a somewhat different way. Mass Effect appears to morph a single head per sex and tints its diffuse maps (skin textures) to achieve the light/dark range. ME hair uses tinting, and has a one-bit alpha.
EDIT: Whoops, I suppose I should clarify: textures and hair don't really have anything to do with FaceFX, but I wanted to clarify that our heads don't really look like Mass Effect heads.
In short, the heads should look far better than M.E's with a controlled customization process(Though can be limiting) and a higher bit for the hair to present it more realistic.
I will go cry now.
