Title: Feral Predator hands CGI enhancement
Post by: frasermaxx on Oct 28, 2022, 08:58:07 AM
The hand close up scene of feral predator smelling the ash always bugged me. The CGI fingers were more slender with pointed nails and then suddenly next scenes where stubby sausage like fingers. I felt the CGI on the hands were unnecessary had they made the fingers more sleek looking like the original predator.

Predator 1987 had a close up of the predator tending to his wounds on the tree and it looked bloody good even to this day, no CGI whatsoever. Don't understand why the creative team sculpted thick stubby fingers only to be CGI enhanced later on.

They knew they were going to do CGI finger replacements to add movement that can't be done with gloves.

Why they sculpted chubby and edited slim I don't know; ADI can do slim fingers, we've seen it many times. AvPG is interviewing Woodruff soon; ask in the thread to see if he answers. Seems weird that if they knew they wanted slender, pointed fingers from the outset that they'd sculpt anything different.

(In before people try to pass off such a blatant design change as incompetence on one party or the other).

It's noticeable but it honestly doesn't really bother me. The scene where he smells the ash is super cool regardless.

It looks great in 87 until I see the fingernails bend, squish and warp into new shapes when Jungle Hunter is fixing himself up. Can't ever unsee that stuff. Otherwise, it's not noticed until pointed out for most people.

.35 & when he makes a fist you see those nails move unnaturally, and .40 too.

I can give Prey some slack because the first film dealt with it. Yes, it was 35 years ago, and the designs didn't change mid movie in 87. Just to me, these things don't ruin or take away from the experience.

I just took it as stunt gloves that maybe needed to swap in for the original because of being damaged or something of the sort where they couldn't get what they should have had or what they'd wanted. Coulda reshot it too, but maybe it was caught too late. Or maybe it wasn't any of this at all, and something we aren't aware of. I like to think it's something that wasn't caught in time to fix.

QuoteAlthough the majority of shots of the Feral Predator in Prey were achieved via practical effects, the VFX team, led by Ryan Cook, did provide some digital augmentation. "There was a plan that was set in pre-production and it was executed pretty much exactly," said Gillis. "We do see touches on the face at times, like on a big roar, there's a little shake inside the mouth. That is something that we just can't do. There's also some hand replacement when there's an extreme closeup [of the Feral Predator] feeling the ash in his hand and it's kinda turning to dust. There's a lot of digital work in that. One of the tells is that all the points of movement of the finger are moving. When we do a finger cup with an extension, we lose the last joint. People notice that. So that was always a plan, we're gonna do a digital hand."
