Predator was first released on DVD in 2001 and later released as a two-disc Special Edition set in the UK in June 2002. It took over two years and it finally made its way to the US in August 2004 under the title Predator: Collector’s Edition. It’s been re-released quite a few times, most recently as Predator: Definitive Edition in April 2007 which is a steelbook. After they released the remastered Blu-Ray in 2010, they re-released it on DVD with the new transfer and the commentary tracks too.
The first Predator Blu-Ray set was released in the US on April 15, 2008 and in the UK on May 12, 2008 but it contained no special features. A new special edition Predator Blu-Ray, marketed as the Ultimate Hunter Edition, came out in the US on June 29, 2010 and July 2010 in the UK just in time for Predators. It contains a brand new transfer as well as all the features from the DVD Special Edition. There’s a sneak peak of Predators as well as a new featurette: “Evolution of the Species: Hunters of Extreme Perfection”.
The Predator 3D Blu-Ray sets were released in December 2013. You can buy the regular edition from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com. For those people wondering about the picture quality, it has the same digital restoration as the 2010 Blu-Ray. (i.e. DNR). Check out caps-a-holic.com for a picture comparison. In terms of special features, it includes the same extras as the previous Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray release. In addition, a limited edition ‘Predator Head‘ version was released worldwide.
There’s a few different covers for the Predator 3D set. Some of the early versions in the UK had a limited edition slipcase showing Dutch through the Predator’s heat vision. The standard version is just of Dutch. There is also an exclusive limited edition steel case version of Predator 3D that is exclusive to UK retailer Zavvi, released December 8, 2014.
In August 2018, 20th Century Fox released the Predator trilogy on 4K Blu-Ray for the first time. The 4K version of Predator can be bought on its own or as part of the Predator Trilogy 4K Set or the Predator 4-Movie 4K Set. The 4K Sets also include the normal Blu-Ray version on a separate disc which contains all previously released special features.
Predator has been released as part of many DVD and Blu-Ray boxsets over the years. The first release in the UK was in 2001 on DVD which included the single disc versions of Predator and Predator 2. A boxset was released in 2004 but the disc in this one was taken from the first disc of the Special Edition so it had the commentaries while Predator 2 was still the same disc.
To promote Alien vs Predator in 2004, Aliens and Predator were re-packaged together as a 2-Disc or 4-Disc Set with a bonus disc with a behind-the-scenes AvP featurette. The latter set also had a movie ticket to AvP and some art cards.
A 4-Disc collection with Predator and Predator 2 was released in 2005 which included the special editions of both Predator films.
Japan saw the release of the AvP Monster Box including every Alien, Predator and AvP film. In 2006, a Deluxe Predator Head sculpture and DVD set was released in Japan and Europe which included both Predator films and AvP over 6 discs.
Predator was then collected in 2008 as part of a 8-Disc Alien vs Predator: Total Destruction Collection compromising of every Alien, Predator and AvP film at that point. The Predator Quadrilogy was released in 2008 including both AvPs and both Predator films.
Australia and some European countries got the Alien/AVP/Predator Ultimate Annihilation Set in 2011 – a 11-Disc Set including all Alien, Predator and AvP movies, as well as art cards and a booklet. After Predators was released, there were a few Blu-Ray boxsets including all three Predator films. When the movies moved to 4K in 2018, you could also find the movie as part of a Predator 3-Movie or Predator 4-Movie 4K collections.
