Aliens DVDs & Blu-Rays
Laserdisc
Aliens: Special Collector’s Edition was released on a 4-Disc Laserdisc set in North America on December 18, 1991 and featured the Special Edition of Aliens as well as many bonus features. This was really the first time the Special Edition we know was released to the public. (An extended version of Aliens was broadcast on CBS in 1989 but it was heavily censored and many visual effects were unfinished). The extras were presented in the form of a slideshow with lots of text but there were photographs and video clips too. The laserdisc set was the first attempt in the Alien franchise at making a deluxe edition of a movie for home media release.
DVD
Aliens was first released on DVD on June 1, 1999 in North America and May 15, 2000 in the UK. It was essentially the same disc as the one in the Alien Legacy boxset with the same bonus features. It included the Special Edition of Aliens. After the Alien Quadrilogy came out, a 2-Disc Aliens Special Edition DVD Set was released in North America on January 6, 2004 and in the UK on March 15, 2004. This set includes both the Theatrical and the Special Edition as well as numerous featurettes.
In 2007, a Definitive Edition Steelbook DVD set was released in the UK which was a repackaging of the Special Edition.
Blu-Ray
After the Alien Anthology was released, Aliens came to Blu-Ray in North America on May 10, 2011 and January 30, 2012 in the UK. The set is similar to the Special Edition DVD but without the second disc of featurettes.
In North America, Aliens 30th Anniversary was released on Blu-Ray on September 13, 2016. This was a repackaging of the previous Blu-Ray, but did include Aliens: 30 Years of Terror art book and 10 art cards. It was released in the UK on October 10, 2016 as a Steelbook with the art cards but without the art book.
