Tessa (Predator: Badlands)
Posted by Darkness on November 11, 2025 (Updated: 30-Nov-2025)
Tessa is a highly advanced synthetic created by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation who serves as a key antagonist in the 2025 film Predator: Badlands, where she is portrayed by Elle Fanning. Originally deployed to Genna with her “sister” unit, Thia, Tessa’s primary mission is to study and capture the indigenous “unkillable” creature known as the Kalisk.
Appearance
Tessa is a synthetic designed to appear as a young human woman, characterised by her short blonde hair, often parted to the sides, and her Weyland-Yutani research uniform. Her appearance is significantly altered after her initial encounter with the Kalisk. Though she is repaired at the Weyland-Yutani base, she retains visible damage:
- Facial Scars: Noticeable light scarring, particularly on her right cheek.
- Ocular Damage: Her right eye is clouded over, reflecting the severity of her trauma.
- Voice: Her voice is described as distinctly different from that of her synthetic sister, Thia.
Biography
Background
Tessa is a synthetic designed by the Weyland-Yutani Bio-Weapons Division, optimised for field operations and mission completion. She is created to work in tandem with her synthetic sister, Thia.
Mission to Genna
Two years prior to Dek’s arrival, Weyland-Yutani dispatched an all-synthetic convoy, including research and military units, to Genna. Their explicit mission was to study the planet’s environment and capture the enormous native creature known as the Kalisk. During this period, Tessa acted as the primary field scout while Thia remained primarily in the lab.
Tessa & Thia vs. Kalisk
Tessa brought Thia along on one scouting trip where they encountered the Kalisk. The creature proved devastating, disabling several synthetics, destroying Weyland-Yutani equipment, and severely damaging both Tessa and Thia, resulting in Thia being severed in half. Tessa’s body was recovered and brought back to the base for extensive repair.
Tessa Awakens
After her repairs, Tessa is rebooted. She is informed by the base computer, MU/TH/UR, that the company is displeased with the mission failure, and continued failure will result in her decommission. Upon learning that the Yautja hunter, Dek, is now in possession of the still-disabled Thia, Tessa mobilises her team.
Acquisition of Yautja Technology
In the forest, Tessa and her team locate Dek’s ejected pod and, later, his crashed ship. After overcoming the planet’s dangerous flora, Tessa enters the wreckage and discovers a cache of Yautja weapons, including a Shoulder Cannon and Spherical Ice Grenades. She realises the freezing capability of the grenades provides a means to capture the regenerative Kalisk.
Capture of Dek and the Kalisk
Tessa intercepts Dek and the Kalisk during their battle at the Weyland-Yutani wreckage site. Using one of the recovered ice grenades, she freezes both creatures simultaneously, successfully capturing them and having them transported back to the main base.
Interrogation and Mission Reveal
Tessa confronts the contained Dek, using his identity as a “runt” who was spared by his brother, Kwei, to mock him. She injects him with a blue fluid and attempts to extract a Yautja DNA sample, causing Dek intense pain.
After reactivating Thia, Tessa reveals her true motives: she did not return to rescue Thia, but to complete the mission. She states that protecting Thia during their first encounter was a mistake that almost cost her everything, and declares, “The weak must be culled,” before leaving Dek to be “motivated” by a synthetic guard.
Dek and Thia successfully trick the guard and Dek escapes, though Thia is restrained before she can join him.
The Final Battle
Tessa prepares to load the captured Kalisk onto the ship, but is alerted to Dek’s attack on the base. She arms herself with a massive Power Loader and installs the captured Yautja Shoulder Cannon onto her shoulder.
A battle ensues between Tessa in the Power Loader, and Dek, who is eventually joined by the freed Kalisk and Thia (who has reattached her legs). Tessa thrusts a saw into the Kalisk and Dek manages to sabotage the weapons. Tessa tries to use a spherical ice grenade to stop the Kalisk, but Dek deflects it into the Power Loader’s arm, freezing it and allowing the Kalisk to destroy the unit. As Tessa prepares to fire a shoulder cannon, the Kalisk seemingly destroys her and flips the Power Loader.
After Dek, Thia, Bud and the Kalisk unite, Tessa emerges from the destroyed Power Loader and uses an ice grenade to shatter the Kalisk. She aims her shoulder cannon at Thia, calling her “sister,” to which Thia rejects the title. Before Tessa can fire, Dek thrusts a weapon through her back, finally disabling her. Bud, the Kalisk offspring, subsequently tears Tessa’s head from her body.
Final Trophy
Dek later returns to Yautja Prime and throws Tessa’s severed head at his father’s feet, claiming her as his trophy.
Personality and Traits
Tessa is defined by her absolute, cold-blooded loyalty to the Weyland-Yutani mission and her calculated ruthlessness.
- Mission-Driven: Unlike Thia, who exhibits empathy, Tessa prioritises the corporation’s directive to capture the Kalisk above all else, including her relationship with Thia.
- Deception and Manipulation (Betrayal): Tessa is deceptive regarding her core motivations. She actively rejects her relationship with Thia, revealing she did not return to Genna to rescue her “sister” but solely to complete the Weyland-Yutani mission. This calculated betrayal demonstrates her prioritised loyalty to the corporation’s objectives.
- Pragmatism: She views compassion and protection as liabilities, stating that she made a mistake trying to save Thia and adheres to the harsh philosophy that “The weak must be culled.”
- Advanced Emotion: While seemingly cold, Tessa and Thia are considered “highly, highly developed” synthetics – the most advanced to date – suggesting a complex level of processing and simulated emotion that drives her extreme adherence to duty.
Behind-The-Scenes
- Dual Role: Actress Elle Fanning plays both Thia and Tessa. She noted the challenge of playing two synthetic characters and found inspiration by watching previous synthetic performances in the Alien franchise, including Ian Holm’s Ash and Michael Fassbender’s David.
- Timeline: The film’s exact place in the Alien and Predator franchise timeline is intentionally vague, but director Dan Trachtenberg has indicated it occurs after Alien Resurrection (2381). This suggests the Weyland-Yutani Corporation either survived or was resurrected as a powerful entity, contradicting some established canon.
Trivia
- Actress Elle Fanning plays both Tessa and Thia, who are synthetic “sisters,” which is a first for the Predator franchise.
- It’s unknown when exactly the events of Predator: Badlands take place, although director Trachtenberg did say it was after Alien Resurrection (2381). It is said in that movie that Weyland-Yutani was bought out by another company, but other parts of the canon said that Weyland-Yutani did return as a powerful corporation after the events in Alien Resurrection.
- Given that Thia and Tessa knew Dek was a Yautja and could speak their language, it confirms that Weyland-Yutani are aware of the Yautja and have had previous encounters with them.
- The Power Loader Tessa pilots during the final battle is a clear nod to the iconic mechanical suit used by Ellen Ripley in Aliens (1986).
