Navarro was a colonist at the Jackson’s Star colony and is Bjorn’s adopted sister. She was part of a group of scavengers that went to the Renaissance space station in order to find items so they could escape from the colony. Navarro was played by actress Aileen Wu.

Biography

Early Life

Navarro was a pilot and welder and at some point was taken in by Bjorn’s parents as an adopted child.

Renaissance Station

In 2142, Navarro detected a derelict Weyland-Yutani space station in orbit above Jackson’s Star. Tyler contacted Rain and asked her and Andy to meet them at his place. When Rain got there, Rain hugged Kay. Tyler told Rain about a derelict space station and they could salvage the hypersleep chambers so they could leave Jackson’s Star for Yvaga. They needed Andy to communicate with the station’s computers.

Despite the risks of breaking into Weyland-Yutani property, Rain reluctantly agrees to the plan. The group leaves the planet in the Corbelan IV mining hauler and realise the derelict station in orbit is actually a research station called the Renaissance which includes two modules – Romulus and Remus. They dock at the station and Rain, Kay and Navarro stay behind while Tyler, Bjorn and Andy find the hypersleep chambers.

On the Renaissance, Tyler, Bjorn and Andy fixed the gravity and atmosphere generators. They realise the hypersleep chambers don’t have enough fuel for the trip to Yvaga. The group find a functioning cryo chamber and takes its fuel. In the process, frozen Facehuggers are thawed out and a lockdown is triggered, trapping the trio inside the room.

Andy doesn’t have security clearance to override the doors. Navarro and Rain board the Renaissance to free them while Kay remains behind on the Corbelan IV. Rain finds a chip from a damaged synthetic and Navarro discovers an X-Ray torch which she uses to see through her arm. She takes it with her and Rain and Navarro rescue the others. Rain passes Tyler the chip to insert into Andy. During this, numerous Facehuggers attacked them and they managed to escape. The Facehuggers break through the door and pursue the group. Navarro is attacked by one Facehugger that manages to get through the second set of doors.

Rain reactivates the damaged synthetic, Rook to find out if there is a solution. Rook advises that she can’t be saved and there most likely is an organism inside of her. Rain suggests freezing the tail of the Facehugger. Tyler uses the cryo fuel on the tail. They remove the Facehugger and it scurries off and Navarro regains consciousness. Andy tries to stop Navarro from going back to the Corbalan IV but his pleas are ignored and Navarro and Bjorn go back.

Navarro comes back to the ship and reactivates the ship. She begins to have chest pains and convulse. She uses the X-Ray torch she found earlier on her chest and sees something inside of her trying to get out. Navarro collapsed in Kay‘s arms and convulsed. She accidentally kicks the ship’s controls which is thrown off course. A Chestburster then bursts out of Navarro, killing her. Her corpse is later seen being dragged into a vent by the Xenomorph.

Personality and Traits

Navarro was very close to her adopted brother Bjorn. She was a skilled pilot, easily managing to fly the mining haulerĀ Corbelan IV and intercepting the E.E.V. containing the cryo chambers.

Behind-The-Scenes

Aileen Wu said in the script that Navarro had a mullet which matched what she already had but when they were performing makeup tests, director Fede Alvarez walked in and suggested shaving it all off instead.

Navarro had two Facehugger sequences – the actual attack and when she is on the ground with it wrapped around her head. It was filmed in three or four days. Her first day with the attack sequence was a lot of wire work. She had a lot of rehearsals with the stunt team before that day as her neck had to snap back when the Facehugger jumped on her.

When Wu was on the floor, she found it difficult as she had to match her breathing with the Facehugger’s movements. The fingers of the Facehugger are attached using rubber bands and the tail is wrapped around her neck with a fishing line so they could tug on it and it would squeeze her neck.

Alec Gillis and his puppeteers worked on the Chestburster sequence. Wu’s actual body from the chest down was in a hole. Her arms were real and she had a prosthetic piece attached to herĀ  collarbone. The prosthetic chest piece was hollow so the puppeteers could feed the Chestburster through. The first part of the process took three hours and they must have shot the bursting sequence 20 to 30 times. There was a balloon inside the chest that they would pump air into, to make it look like it was protruding.

The makeup team added a mixture of lemon juice, vinegar and baking soda to make the foam around Navarro’s mouth. The prosthetic piece had a lever and they would press a button, and what filled was a very intense and cracking open of the rib cage. After that sequence, Wu was still needed on set and she had to wear a full piece attached to the front of her body to simulate the open wound.

Trivia

  • Navarro is featured on the main Alien: Romulus poster getting facehugged.
  • Before setting off in the Corbelan IV, Navarro says a prayer in Mandarin Chinese. This was for her family’s ancestors to “please protect the five of us”. There were actually six crew members including Andy which shows that she doesn’t really count Andy as a real person.
