Planet 4 Alien Egg (Alien Covenant)

Alien Egg

The Alien Egg appeared in 2017’s Alien Covenant. These were David’s creations and not exactly the same eggs that we’ve seen before. They didn’t come from a Queen Alien but from David genetically engineering them and therefore look a little different.

Characteristics

In terms of appearance, the Planet 4 Eggs differed greatly from previous eggs encountered. The petals on David’s eggs go down a lot deeper, however they still only open a little bit at the top like normal Alien eggs. Each egg contains a single Planet 4 Facehugger as well as flesh and matter that sustains the Facehugger within. Like previous eggs, it can sense when a suitable host is nearby. At this point, it sacrifices itself and transfers its life into the Facehugger. Its petals then open and the Facehugger jumps out and infects its host.

Story

The android David had been stranded on the Engineer homeworld for over a decade. In that time, he furthered his research and experiments to create the perfect organism. David engineered a few Alien eggs which were left waiting for hosts. When the crew of the Covenant found him, he was able to test out his experiments. Oram approached one of the eggs, which opened and a Facehugger attacked him. Then the creature that emerged from Oram was a juvenile Praetomorph.

The creatures that David created weren’t exactly the same as what had been seen previously. They were a different species, perhaps a precursor, to the Xenomorph seen on the Nostromo and beyond.

David’s Drawings

You can see below a selection of David’s sketches that he did when he created the Alien Egg. (The actual artist was Dane Hallett).

Behind-The-Scenes

Odd Studios and Creatures Inc. Ltd were hired to handle the creature effects on the film. Conor O’Sullivan and his team made the eggs with static and mechanical models. As these were David’s creations and not from an Alien Queen, they differed in appearance from the eggs we had seen previously.
