It’s a common question I’ve seen asked about Cold Iron Studio’s upcoming Aliens: Fireteam Elite. Will it support cross-play? Gamespot has given us a definitive answer to that question, having confirmed with Cold Iron Studios that the answer to that question is no.
When asked, Cold Iron Studios CEO Craig Zinkievich told GameSpot that “there is currently no plan for cross-play at this time.” So maybe it’s added down the line, but it’s looking like that’s not going to happen anytime soon.
It’s certainly disappointing, especially considering the co-operative nature of the game, but as Gamespot noted there’s still a possibility to see the feature added at some point. However, it has been confirmed that Aliens: Fireteam Elite will support cross-generational play where PS4 and PS5 can play together, and likewise for the Xbox.
On the topic of cross-generations, Cold Iron founder Matt Highison, confirmed that last generation copies of the game will also come with free upgrades to the next generation iterations!
Console fam! It’s hard to find a next-gen console. We don’t want you to have to wait to be killed by Xenos.
If you don’t have a next-gen console yet, you can buy the last-gen Fireteam Elite and get a free upgrade when you get the new machine!
Pre-orders get sweet bonuses too.

I'd say there's a high likelihood of that. World War Z, which seems pretty comparable to this in many ways, has a "Horde" mode like that on unique arena maps. If not featured on launch it would be an obvious choice for one of the "season" drops revealed to be coming down the line. We're still yet to hear exactly how the challenge card modifiers work too, but I'd imagine that's going to be more pick-up-and-play in nature than the main campaign missions.
YEEEAAASSS! I want to feel like Hudson.

But I see Aliens Colonial Marines as falling under the Alien intellectual property specifically.
The Predator as under the Predator intellectual property.
And Requiem as under the AVP intellectual property.
All in their own unique corners. 😜
Wait, there's something you find worse then AvP Requiem? You're slowly coming around!
If only Cold Iron could have been a little quicker with this game, they could have timed it / ridden the momentum of Aliens' 35th Anniversary. Missed Opportunity for sure.
Would be nice to hold out on corridors, like the Aliens movie, with increasing difficulty in alien types. Hell an "endless" mode would be great imo.
Also to have a quick game and not play the entire campaign every time. Us dads have a life etc lol.
This isn't a multiplayer game, like Predator: Hunting Grounds or Left 4 Dead. Yes, the co-op component is one of the key features and selling-points, but otherwise it's a campaign-driven shooter. I'm not too fussed about spoilers in the sense of plot twists etc, but if we reach a point where we have so much information on a title that a wiki page could be completed before it's even released, what's the point of even playing it? A big part of why we read books, watch movies, and play games is the process of discovery - being there in the moment as the story unfurls.
If that isn't the experience you want, you can wait until after release, watch a full game play-through, and then decide if it's something you want to buy. I won't have to worry about major spoilers as I've already pre-ordered the game and will be experiencing it first-hand on release day.
Imagine, afraid of spoilers in multiplayer game. lol. Don't want to see a spoilers? Don't read the news. But there is a people, really many people who like spoilers. Really dude, I'm not support this ridiculous spoiler-hysterical culture anyway.
Any secret of this game will be shown immediately after AFE release and many people who themselves want to explore the secrets of the game will be buried under avalanche of spoilers.
Well said.
Seems there's no pleasing people. We've been told the setup in some detail, and had a good look at multiple enemies, classes, and weapons. The latest trailer also features a lot of elements that drop major hints at what happens throughout the story, not to mention the achievements list. Anything more than that I'd start to regard as spoilers, at which point people would start to complain that there's nothing left to discover.
People need to remember that anticipation and that desire to know more are GOOD things. Patience is a virtue, and delayed gratification is the pay-off.
I'm getting quite annoyed that we basically have zero info, bare bones stuff. This is sad, are we sure the game comes out in less then two months? Or is there so little of a story there that they can't afford to show any of it?
Just want this game to work!
It's a more powerfull tool then you would think. BUT... if it's too difficult to implement retroactive then I can sorta live with that.
What I can't live with is this god-awful media silence. I want pics, I want campaign details and xeno info. It's driving me nuts!
But crossplay never really existed during that generation, it's only a fairly recent phenomenon spearhead mostly by Microsoft, and the idea of implementing it retroactively's simply a monumental task not worth the effort the results bring.
It's not perfect but it's the best video game representation of Hadley's Hope ever made.
Unless Windows is classed as an Xbox platform, I don't see a situation where one of us isn't compromising.
In my group of friends, most of us have moved over to PC from being Xbox fans since there doesn't seem to be any point to getting a Series X with all the games coming to PC too.
But one of our friends is just not the type to try and build and play on a PC so he'll be left behind if there is no cross play lol.
my gamertag is coalatree
Nope. It would be cross platform cross play.
Cross gen in this case is a cross play between specific different gen platforms of the same producer, i.e. all Xbox One consoles and all XBox Series consoles or PS4 and PS5 consoles. PCs are on their own.
You can always start the game with 2 bots or one bot and one additional player.
It's a 3 person co-op game, I doubt cross play will effect the matchmaking much.
To me, I think it's apples and oranges to be honest. Crossplay support was announced by Illfonic as a feature of Predator Hunting Grounds pre-release, but it didn't fully work properly out of the gate, so much so that some players were threatening to get together and file a class action lawsuit against Illfonic months later. So crossplay was more than a mention, but announced as a function of the game.
Cold Iron on the otherhand never made such claims, so crossplay won't be a game feature expectation at launch and no one will be pissed over false features. Knowing that's the case then, I find if Cold Iron was planning to add Crossplay in the future and is currently working on it, not saying it-may-come-down-the-road but instead saying there is "no plan" is more demoralizing to your consumers... made obvious by the above posts. So, at least to me, I personally doubt the studio would shut that hope down like this (if the door is actually being opened and stepped through.) So I suspect "no plan" actually means "no plan", unfortunately.
Beeing a horde/survival coop game there is really no reason NOT to do it either, as there are no real advantages to the controls etc. Hell even with Gears 5 VS mode there are no advantages sometimes... you'll get your ass handed to you by some of the X-box players haha.
I'm getting a bad feeling about this drop...
If I had to guess, I'd say Cold Iron have considered the negative backlash games like World War Z and Predator: Hunting Grounds experienced when they mentioned plans for cross-play early on and weren't able to deliver until some time post-launch. People with an axe to grind never let those things go, even after they're rectified, so they probably figure it's better to promise little and then deliver it as a bonus further down the line.
More broadly speaking, I doubt this is going to be a big issue in terms of affecting the lifespan of this particular game. Being limited to 3 players and focusing on longer campaign-style levels, the simultaneous player based doesn't need to be very large at all to keep things going. I think most of us are likely to play it with immediate friends anyway.
PHG had crossplay and most people hate it as there is a definitive advantage using k/m.
Now a game where there might be no advantage to using PS controller or keyboard/mouse and there is no crossplay.
Cross-gen had to be a must considering the chip / lastest gen backlog.
