Crafting the Yautja: StudioGillis and WETA Detail the New Predator for Predator: Badlands

‘Twas the night before Predator: Badlands is released worldwide! 20th Century Studios has released an exciting new featurette for the film, titled “Crafting The Predator”. The video offers an in-depth look at the design and creation of the film’s new Yautja, named Dek.

The iconic creature was brought to life by Alec Gillis and his team at StudioGillis, a company with deep ties to the Alien and Predator franchises. Gillis collaborated closely with director Dan Trachtenberg, who emphasised a commitment to practical effects.

Alec talks us through what went into creating Dek. Alec says that Trachtenberg wanted to get as much work in camera as possible. Gillis notes the Predator’s look is “The Predator aesthetic is ancient looking, but at the same time very modern.” To realise this vision, StudioGillis partnered with WETA Workshop on the suits and weapons. Gillis was particularly impressed with WETA’s work, stating the weaponry had to be “hero closeup worthy as well as stunt worthy.”

The featurette provides a clear look at the assortment of weaponry Dek employs, including a striking new addition to the franchise: a sword. Director Trachtenberg was enthusiastic about this new weapon, explaining that it “uses electricity in a way that all the Yautja weapons do but is able to be wielded in a way that speaks to the nobility of a knight or a barbarian.”

If the females gonna look like the classic Predators, I gonna be "told ya!". Since we have had zero evidence what sex they are and they're not exactly mammals.

And while I loved the execution of the designs, I do think production shaved money by simply doing the last video games' designs.

Man, the weapons look so damn good in this movie! The blade is especially bad-ass visually and functionally.

I just really miss seeing Preds with fishnets on...I wish Dan would bring that back.
