Predator: Badlands Stalks Den of Geek Magazine

Predator: Badlands is the cover feature of the 10th anniversary issue of Den of Geek magazine. I believe it’s free in certain shops in North America and it might be available for free digitally on their website at some point. The cover features a new image of a masked Dek carrying Thia on his back and I think this might be the first time we’ve seen his wristblades.

I believe the accompanying article in the magazine can be found on Den of Geek’s website and features interviews with Dan Trachtenberg, Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Fanning describes her character of Thia as quirky and empathetic, while her sister Tessa is “practical and scientific”.

A lot of it is familiar things we’ve heard in other set reports this week, although Trachtenberg did make an interesting comment about a future Alien vs Predator film and future Predator films.

“It’s not Alien versus Predator,” the director insists. “Maybe one day we will get there in an elegant way, but not in a gimmicky way where we’re just taking all the action figures and smashing them together. Maybe we get there if that’s where the stories aspired to go and they make things better for each other.”

With that said, he does have a loose plan. “Before Killer of Killers or Badlands, I wrote for the studio a little universe bible of what we could be doing, all the different things, all the different kinds of movies that could be,” Trachtenberg confirms. However, he is also aware that he’s not the first filmmaker to plan for a future that is far from set in stone. “I break no new ground by saying this. We have to make one movie at a time.”

Predator: Badlands Stalks Den of Geek Magazine

It does seem like we’re building slowly to a new Alien/Predator crossover film, even if it might not be titled Alien vs Predator. Thanks to Yautja Lore for the news.

I don't have an issue with the rating personally but I would imagine Badlands was written with that rating in mind.

Yeah I start to feel like it was maybe the plan all along..

Mainly because I think they are trying to make sure this Predator film can match or come close to the earnings like the way Alien: Romulus did. The Alien franchise is  certainly more reliable at the box office over the years than the Predator films. So they probably have some cold feet and are worried about another Predator film flop.

Which I don't blame them, but they probably just really want each franchise to generate the revenue & popularity before the inevitable AVP film again (which I'm always ready for the next AVP installment) 8)

    Yes and no.

I think 'they' are desperate for AvP and this idea was a means to expedite it. So in that respect, I think they were 'happy' to have synths and not humans.

But in the long run, it's basically going to be Aliens vs Predator vs Colonial Marines - so I think we'll see some real gore in the next instalments.

This film looks like they want to rebrand slightly and build a mega franchise to cash in and grow awareness (and perhaps even aspire to be another big Space Opera a la Star Wars...).

The budget looks big. The marketing looks amazing. They've got the industry leaders in for the VFX. So I think this is definitely the AvP soft launch; then, the next few instalments will be a 'proper' Pred film and an AvP - both of which will bring back the horror/slasher/gore elements people want. And we'll see a return to normal age ratings as a result.

Sounds like Trachtenberg really wants to be that guy to make 8 Predator movies.

Only thing is I hope that the possible success of PG-13 Badlands doesn't put the wrong ideas into 20th Century and Dis' heads that PG-13 can just be applied to everything if this really pops off at the box office.

For me , if the CGI is bad I can be instantly taken out of a film, so really hope they get it right. I would have loved practical effects but the roar scene does give me hope as CG looks great.

Indeed that shot somewhat bothered me. CGI didn't completely really work there. And yes the swinging part doesn't look great neither but the fact that i really want him to move through the trees like that makes up for it i guess.

They changed that shot? Wasn't bad the first time but that's intriguing.

They didn't really change the shot, they just improved the CGI compared to the teaser.

Internet must have taken one too many Tylenol pills. If he's 7'3 and portrays Dek as that height, then his bro must be like 12ft tall or something. He wouldn't be a runt at all

I can easily imagine the character canon height like 6ft for Dek and 7'3 for Kwei.

I hope to godddddd this new alien/predator cross over isn't on modern day earth. Can we go back to the original comics please and go to Ryushi maybe?

Yeah, as soon as you set a predator movie in the future and it interacts with elements of the alien universe, you really can't go back to modern day earth for an AVP movie.

They can if they decide to follow the "unused" Newt ending from The Predator
