After the release of a new film in our favorite franchises, the next thing we’re often looking forward to is seeing all the incredible behind the scenes and concept arts making their way online.
With the first animated film in the franchise, Predator: Killer of Killers released last week, we now have some incredible early exploration concepts brought to us by artist Farzad Varahramyan, aka Farzad Art.
These concept art pieces give us an a look at earlier designs for the human & predator characters, as well as their weaponry. Check them out below!
Farzad Varahramyan has previously collaborated with Studio Gillis (formerly StudioADI). He is no stranger to the franchise, having contributed to conceptual explorations for Prey, The Predator, the unmade Alien 5, Alien vs. Predator, and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.
So me of the concept seem to hint at other earlier directions that might have been taken, such as the fighter pilot character initially being German before ultimately being portrayed as an American.
On his website, Farzad had this to say about his time on the project:
I had the pleasure to work on director Dan Trachtenberg’s KILLER OF KILLERS, the latest installment in the PREDATOR universe. And once again I had the privilege to work with one of my mentors and creature creation masters Alec Gillis of STUDIO GILLIS. Because of Alec this was the 5th time I got to work on a Predator Movie.
On this project I was brought in at the very beginning to help visualize and give some options on what Predators, humans and their weapons may look like in these 3 distinct time pieces. I usually do as many quick concept sketches to help set some visual markers, specifically to help myself and the team kind of see the whole character and get into the mindset of this new character, even if the end design is not going to look like what I drew. The initial brief had some period specific details but I was given room to explore new directions.
The script was evolving like everything else and that’s normal. For example, initially the WW2 pilot was German, but then it got switched to a US pilot, so I suggested the Tuskegee Airman, and would have loved to see the Predator pilot in some kind of “Predator Pressure Suit” for high-G combat tactics.
Because of my Industrial Design background, Alec also had me focus on figuring out a new set of weapons for each time period. It was a fantastic project, and I am so thankful to have been brought in once more to contribute to this fantastic PREDATOR universe with such a talented team. Thank you Dan and Alec!

The first concept art looks like an early concept art for the elder in Badlands.
I wonder if Badlands might finally have one. Unlike Prey and Killer of Killers (streaming releases) or Romulus (began life as a streaming release that pivoted to theatrical), Badlands is the first of the Disney/20th Century Studios era to be a theatrical film from the outset. Maybe that will come with all of the bells and whistles associated with that.
Though, maybe not... even Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes didn't get an art book...
The Creator did, though. And of course, Avatar: The Way of Water.
Thought the same thing lol. It also makes me laugh how often Dan specifically has said the Predators are NOT like Jason Voorhees (I personally don't see the comparison myself either), but that comparison has been beat into the ground on these boards.
If that last one was in the movie, some people on this forum would have been vindicated with all the comparisons that Feral got with Jason Voorhees.
Also, the second to last picture is supposed to be a female predator right?
Warlord in his chair like...

ADI self published their AvP books, the The Predator one was by Titan Books I believe, and lacked in concept art/sculptures. The AvP books are great in that aspect.
Did they make concept art books for the other predator movies?
Sick. I hope we get some high res postings of these.
Every day we get closer to a predator dread beard and I can't wait to see the meltdown that it will cause.
I need to buy popcorn.

Beards.
I never said that it was a good thing, but a xenomorph inspired predator armour would make more sense in a AVP movie.
I could see this design being reused in an AVP movie.

Yes, that's the one! So goddamn creepy
I see so much Super Predator/Berserker in that face, yeah. Honestly kind of blindsided me, since I never really expected anyone to actually tap into that well (even just in concept art that never came close to making it to screen) again.
This one kind of looks like a Feral and super predator hybrid.
Interesting/shocking seeing literal, explicitly cited Alien influence in those.
Also, this one...

...has some real Gremlin energy, which is pretty appropriate, given all of the stories about "Gremlins" tinkering with planes in WWII.
All of the art is awesome. Honestly think I prefer Viking Predator (the one posted above) better than the small head/weak glutes one we ended up with. Also, his version of Ursa's son has a lot more personality than what was in the movie. Really great concept art.
Oh, and the Tuskegee pilot, too. Not sure if he was supposed to be a Tuskegee airman in the movie, but it's a cool reference otherwise!
Also, one of those concepts for the Japan Predator looks very Mr. Black-influenced.
