[Spoilers] Predator: Killer Of Killers Premiere Q&A With Dan Trachtenberg, Joshua Wassung & Micho Robert Rutare

This post will contain major spoilers for Predator: Killer of Killers. The first animated anthology Predator film is out now on Hulu and Disney+. After the exclusive early theatrical screenings at the BeyondFest, the co-directors Dan Trachtenberg, Joshua Wassung and writer Micho Robert Rutare sat down for a Q&A. The footage is provided by Mike from Mike’s Monsters, who was at the premiere and is a longtime friend of AvP Galaxy, being one of the founding members of the AvP Galaxy Podcast.

Amongst the many details the creative team has revealed during the Q&A, some of them stand out when it comes to the production process. Dan Trachtenberg explained how at the earliest stages when the concept was being discussed with Joshua Wassung, that a series was being pitched, but then they wouldn’t be able to work with Steve Asbell and the same team over at 20th Century Studios which made them doubt that the series would be approved if it was pitched in that format.

Later, Joshua Wassung also explained how the whole production process, once they got the green light, took about 18 months from start to finish. When it came to the question of where they would like to see the sequel go next, Joshua Wassung said that he would like to continue the stories of the introduced characters, but at the same time, he would like to see new characters and time periods explored. The writer, Micho Robert Rutare, mentioned that he would like to see a future story explore the Predator against the Knights Templar.

[Spoilers] Predator: Killer Of Killers Premiere Q&A With Dan Trachtenberg, Joshua Wassung & Micho Robert Rutare

Trachtenberg again mentioned that there were 3 projects that were planned after Prey – Predator: Killer of Killers, Badlands and an unnamed third project, which we’ve covered in an interview with Fangoria would include Naru. Starting from 19:10 in the video, Trachtenberg is purposefully vague in answering the implied question of interconnectivity of the different installments as well as the meaning of his Weyland-Yutani hat, with his short side tangent:

…I know you’re asking something larger, which is also true, but I can’t really say much about that…

Is that ‘something larger’ Naru’s reappearance, the inclusion of Weyland-Yutani in Badlands or possible considerations and plans for a future Alien vs. Predator film? We can’t be sure, but we’ll certainly get another piece of the puzzle with the release of Predator: Badlands. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.

A special thanks to Mike for recording the Q&A.

There we have it, straight from Dan's mouth, at least he's breaking the ice now. Considering there  are so many realistic model makers (NOT THE TRASH KOK brought) creating extremely different female Predator designs.

Thank you Dan for break the ice! May we see incredible designs soon for NON-animated live action predator films because I'm a massive fan of practical effects and live action HORROR films.

"and I see them as a combination of, for lack of a better terms, the Frank Frazetta/Conan aesthetic and those fibers mixed with a Spartan-like culture that prides themselves on strength and brutality."

    Oh hell yeah

Quote"We are only seeing one corner of their culture, but I do think [hunting is] a significant part of their culture. But in general, I'm a little bored by — and why they aren't all wearing the exact same mask and why they don't all look identical and why they behave in slightly different ways is, I get a little bored when we see Kashyyyk, the Wookiee planet or whatever, and they're all just a bunch of Chewbaccas. Some have a little bit of a gray fur and some of them [don't], but they're all basically just Chewbacca, just standing around being Wookiees."

"I think species-wise, [the Yautja] should be as varied, at least, as we are. But there's definitely a culture rooted in warriordom, and I see them as a combination of, for lack of a better terms, the Frank Frazetta/Conan aesthetic and those fibers mixed with a Spartan-like culture that prides themselves on strength and brutality."

There we have it, straight from Dan's mouth, for anyone that was worried about the portrayal of Predators in this being how he sees all aspects of all Predators: "[...]one corner of their culture[...]"

    Awesome video Mike. Good job.

I am sure Dan has some ideas and plans in store for the Predator universe, whether on Naru, a potential AVP sometime in the future or other ideas. But he probably don't want (or can't) disclose them at this point.

This actually is a smart move, you don't want to prematurely spill the beans about any Predator cinematic universe before such a thing is a certainty. Take it one movie/show at a time to gradually build up the story  (and of course there is the reality of the whole enterprise being contingent on box office returns).

You don't want to end up like Universal with their "Dark Universe" going down the drain before it got going, due to the box office and critical failure of Tom Cruise's "Mummy".

I found an interesting Easter egg with KOK that I haven't seen anyone talk about...

So, Dan the man just did an interview with Collider, as we all know... But did any of you catch the hat he is wearing...Shawscope/The Shaw brothers...Which was the largest distributor of Hong Kong films from the 1920s-2011. Shawscope made several reputable kung fu/martial arts films in the 60's/70s, similar to the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone or Corbucci.

Films like the one-armed swordsmen play into that temple duel in KOK...So in short, the combat from those films probably inspired some elements that went into Killer of Killers, Prey, and maybe Badlands.

Quote from: [cancerblack] on Jun 07, 2025, 07:54:02 PMKeep seeing comparisons of the Predators in this to Warhammer 40k Orks by people who are either being intentionally hyperbolic or have literally no clue what the f**k they're talking about.

I'm guilty of this one, and also very much an outsider that just kind of peers in every so often on that property without ever really knowing what the hell I'm looking at, so I'm very much not at all an expert on anything 40K. I can't speak to anything specific from the lore/setting, but it was just an aesthetic overlap (probably more appropriately, a similar overlapping shared well of influences in aesthetics) that made my mind want to jump there.

For your edification; their broad aesthetics and tone are honestly much closer to mad max than anything else, with the absurdity and black comedy ratcheted up to 11 in usual GW fashion. Heavy Metal Big Guys Who Like Skulls is most of Warhammer, so it's fair play people are associating this depiction to that setting, but the Orks definitely ain't it - the evil space marines and evil space elves are a lot closer, but not as well known or memed.

It just hit me now, as I reread some posts in this thread, that I somehow I totally missed the word "Orks" in your original post.

I wasn't actually nailing down any one particular faction, just more of an overall aesthetic, in my mentions of 40K. That being said, I am now quite interested in digging into the Elves that you mentioned here a bit...

The Elves in question also have big Hellraiser vibes, if that helps.

When you say Hellraiser, you are talking about cenobites right?
