[Spoilers] “There’s Definitely A Plan In Mind” – Dan Trachtenberg And Josh Wassung Discuss Predator: Killer Of Killers

As we’re eagerly awaiting the release of Predator: Killer of Killers animated anthology film, Dan Trachtenberg and Josh Wassung reveal more details about the project in an interview with Fangoria and Gizmodo. In the interview with Fangoria, Trachtenberg, while speaking of Prey, says:

Sometimes people make a cool movie and then the sequel is just a sequel to the cool movie. Not a cool movie in and of itself. I was really racking my brains, what would be, not just the next minute of this story we just told, but actually what has not been done in the franchise before?

This led Trachtenberg to ask himself what more could be done time period wise? Fangoria reports:

Enter Killer of Killers. Trachtenberg co-directed the anthology alongside John Wassung, marking his feature directorial debut. Trachtenberg and Wassung had worked together many times before. Wassung and his company The Third Floor had done lots of visual effects work, specifically pre-visualization. “He was like, ‘Dude, I know we just do pre-viz but I really think me and the company here are ready to do a finished project,” Trachtenberg explained. “I love me an underdog story and they showed me some tests that they had done. They were incredible. And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. Animation. Okay. What if we do Predator animated?’”

When it came to how Wassung approached the project, the interview states:

“We worked really hard, really, really rapidly,” Wassung said. “We did pre-viz for the movie while he was working on the script.” They were able to get the movie in decent shape, with several internal screenings at the studio, before Trachtenberg had to leave to actually begin filming Badlands in New Zealand. Even so, they stayed in touch frequently, even as Trachtenberg was neck deep in production on a live-action blockbuster. “We had a trust because we worked together for years,” Wassung said.

“If you could pause it at any point in time, it should really feel like you’re looking at a painting,” Wassung added.

Regarding questions about the future of the Predator franchise after the release of Predator: Killer of Killers and Predator: Badlands, Wassung in the interview lets us know:

“We need to give Dan just a little bit more time to finish Badlands because he’s still working so hard on that movie but yes, we are definitely talking about it,” Wassung said regarding a possible follow-up to Killer of Killers. “We would love to explore what happens next.”

And beyond the potential of a Killer of Killers follow-up, Trachtenberg teased us with the potential of a Prey 2 being the alleged 3rd project that’s already in the works:

I had a bunch of big ideas when I finished Prey, I would love to get to all of them. There’s definitely a plan in mind, but the movie (Predator: Killer of Killers) has to do well. So, we’ll see. The third story, which I can’t speak to yet, is what would happen with Naru.

This next quote has potentially mild spoilers for the upcoming animated film, so caution is recommended for anyone avoiding any spoilers. In one of the recent trailers, there is a shot of a mysterious, unknown Predator. Many fans have speculated that the visible bone decorations from that Predator’s attire are of Alien origins. Trachtenberg fills us in on some of the details about that mysterious character:

What I think is really cool about the design of the warlord Predator is he’s the biggest one we’ve seen. He’s got a cape made of bones and the face mask he’s wearing is actually a Yautja skull, another Predator skull that he’s wearing, being the top dog. I love that design and I think what people are seeing as Xenomorph might actually be Predator or other species.

In the interview with Gizmodo, Trachtenberg talks about the early conceptualisation of the anthology and also adds:

“Truly, the great key turn was ‘Oh wait a second. It’s not three stories. It’s one story,’” Trachtenberg said. “First thinking of Twilight Zone: The Movie and then realizing, ‘No, no, there’s another kind of anthology.’ Pulp Fiction is also an anthology, and that really does feel like one story. So yeah, then the champions all coming together in an arena suddenly felt like ‘Wow, this gets wider at the end.’ It doesn’t just get bigger and longer, it gets wider and covers stuff that was already happening theoretically in the franchise that we didn’t even know about.”

I won't play Valorant simply because it looks the way it does. Does that make me horrible? No. because I like other games with better artistic direction. Simple as that.

I don't think anyone has anything against the idea of "artistic intent"; that doesn't mean anyone has to like the artistic intent of any given project.

This is a bit reductive imo, people can not like something while still understanding the intent behind it. Art by its very nature is subjective, both in terms of its creation and reception. I can understand why someone painted a painting a certain way while still thinking it's butt ugly.

This being a way to design this segment does not mean it was the only way, and not liking this specific approach does not mean people have no sense of creative vision.

You guys say its okay to not like the design, but thats not true is it? If you don't like it then you just don't understand artistic intent  and animation!

Can't wait to get an Alien equivalent of this and one of the Aliens ends up being impossibly skinny and nimble and contorts in ways that the human body couldn't and people cry foul.

There was NO reason to go as far as he did. That thing is the """""""Upgrade"""""""" 2.0 and nothing you can EVER say will excuse it.

Just to give some people some visual reference since people haven't thought to look at the trailer to see more of the size scaling. You can see our main Viking character is smaller than most of the humans in her story.

Specifically, this big guy on the right of the frame is also massive. So the Viking Predator is going to tower over him. Imagine if they'd had Arnold scaled up to match the Predator? He'd make Jungle Hunter look less intimidating since he could see eye to eye with Arnold at that point.

Remember that Arnold is 6′ 2″ and KPH was 7′ 3″. Over a whole foot taller than him. That big guy Predator is just over a foot taller than the largest Viking characters, so I'd say it lines up with what we've seen in our live action versions of the Predator characters.

    Image Link

You can see him here on the left in the shadows. There are other large human designs in the characters in this story too, not just that one big guy.

Hell... is the Predator in the ninja/samurai story too big too because they have to look up at him? Or is it just stylization and that each character has their own design intention?

Stylizing some of the characters in your cartoon movie and not others, whether its in a superhero movie for kids or a Super Serious Big Boy Cartoon With Swears and Blood For Real You Guize, seems kind of...

But whatever, Killer of Killers is NEW and DIFFERENT and thus automatically good.

    Yes.

Not every human is super stylized in this movie, like how each Predator design isn't stylized. That's the best thing about art and directed style intention, not everything needs to be realistic, while some designs can go crazier. Animation brings out this, so yes, the animation is the excuse.

I'm going to use Kingpin in the Spiderverse again. He's designed like a brick wall to be large and intimidating while tons of humans in that are designed with more regular proportions. You may think it looks silly or totally don't like it, which is absolutely fine. But if you were to argue that he can't look that way because it's an animated movie, and that was their intention, I'd say you're flat wrong.

Quote from: 426Buddy on Jun 04, 2025, 01:30:56 PMThere will be no accepted criticism of this design cuz "stylized".

Criticism is fine. If someone doesn't like something, they don't like it. That's all perfectly valid.

I take issue with the statement that there is "no defense" of the "Hulk Predator" when even the human beings in that chapter are hulking beasts.

I genuinely think it's Dan going the easy route that says "big vikings obviously equals big predator !" when it's not obligated at all IMO. Plus, the main character in this segment appears to be a woman not that hulking so...
  13. Bonestabby
The Predator in Captive, one of the better comics, was also highly stylized. It also looked like ass.

Predahulk did not need to be twelve feet tall to make the "hulking" (lmao) Vikings seem small. They went completely overboard, and it looks stupid.

I don't care what facile excuses anybody makes.
  14. 426Buddy
Hes obviously speaking hyperbole because he doesn't like it.

Just gets a little old seeing the "its animation!" defense every time. I think everyone understands that it's stylized animation. Lot of peeps still take issue with this hulk-like interpretation.

Also the boy and old woman characters appear to be normal size people,  so is it the other vikings that are exaggerated and huge?
  15. Bilbo Bagshot
I'm not totally inboard with the art style but I think the concept is sound enough to work in the Predator world without adding a great deal of  thought provoking or fresh , New original takes to  the series.

It pretty much is a 'what if' scenario which was a offshoot from Prey. Not exactly the most original concept ie throwing the beast into various other periods and cultures.
  16. Bonestabby
The hulk Predator is idiotic, there's no defending it.

I think letting Trachtenberg have full control over the Predator franchise is a mistake. Prey was only good compared to The Predator and the AVP movies, maybe Predators if you're not feeling charitable to that movie (which, fair enough, it has its fair share of problems) but I think I'd prefer this series going dormant for another decade than see it get turned into another Star Wars or Comic Cinematic Universe slop factory.

All of it is gonna be amazing, I can just feel it! lol I think this is gonna be so much fun. I think 'Badlands' is gonna be alot of fun too. I just hope Disney being involved doesn't screw things up.
  18. Mike’s Monsters
Imagining a normal looking Predator going up against the giant Viking human characters they designed for this film makes me laugh. They had to make the big one gigantic, or else he'd have been small compared to the humans.
