Alien: Lost Transmission – Alien Fan Film Released

A short fan film set in the Alien universe has been released today. Alien: Lost Transmission is 28 minutes long and takes place a month after the events in Alien: Romulus. A salvage crew retrieves classified materials from the Romulus Station, and they are intercepted by a Weyland-Yutani ship.

Two characters called Colin and Naomi, are trapped inside a small maintenance room, hiding from a Xenomorph that is tearing its way through the crew. In order to survive, they have to escape the room and reach the escape bay, but a Xenomorph is on the vessel hunting them.

Alien: Lost Transmission is written and directed by Connor Botts and stars Gabriela Fuentes, Benjamin Mayer, and Jacob Daniels with an original score by Brian Bryson.

I love how Hicks says according to a quick Google 🤣 I bet he knows that off by heart! Heck when I was a teenager I wore out my copy of Aliens on VHS and could recite the whole film from memory 😆

Not really. Alien drops four f-bombs in the entire 117 runtime and this short drops more than that before the credits have even finished.

Echoing what others have said, this is very well put-together. I was most impressed by how clear the dialogue was, as that's always a bitch to get right on a low budget.

Definitely needed to be shorter, though. Two people sitting a room talking for half an hour isn't really what I was hoping for with an ALIEN short film.

    @TheDerelict

Just to clarify, I'm not offended by profanity and I'm not against swearing in an Alien script, it was just the excessive use that didn't feel natural. My guess is it was an attempt to heighten the tension of the situation give the limited screen time / resources of the project. It just really jumped out to me. I'll give it a second watch and see it still does.

I'm the same. I read somewhere that it's a sign of intelligence in a person. And to paraphrase a character I hate, I choose to believe it.  :P It's just a facet of the franchise, imho. The films are laden with them.

Yeah, if you can't drop a couple of F bombs while welding a door shut and condemning others to die at the hands nightmare creatures of the void...when can you?

    I liked this a lot!  :)

But I have some commentary, FWIW.

    It's a one act play.

But at 28 minutes it's long enough that it needs more story.

What is 'more story?' It doesn't mean longer script. It means the drama needs some kind of structure that pulls me through a progression of story beats. Even if it was an audio drama (or live stage play), in which the story is told through dialogue only (e.g. My Dinner with Andre), to satisfy as a narrative it needs some sense of progression in order to best hold my attention.

Either that or make it short. The shorter a story gets the more 'experimental' it becomes. A 3 minute music video is a type of short film; a 30 second TV commercial is a type of short film; a 10 second Station ID is a type of short film. The shorter a short film gets, the more 'rules' it can discard in its unorthodoxy and get away with it.

Oh, and Ben; your acting skills are impressive. Is there nothing you can't do?

Best of luck on the next one!

  6. Big thanks!
My name is Ben Mayer, and I play Colin and am an executive producer of this fan film. We are very proud of this little film and are shocked at how much attention it has gotten. That was not at all our expectation. That being said, we learned soooo much from making this film and have been very attentive to the constructive criticism and feedback y'all have been giving. Those are very important to us and we are annoyed we can't go back in time to implement those tips before the release. We think many of your comments about tweaks to the film are incredibly valid and we're going to do our best to do better for y'all next time! We sincerely appreciate the love and positivity this has gotten, but also fully recognize and own the criticisms that it is also getting. That is part of the learning process and Connor and I are absolutely here for it. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

When fan fiction happens, typically, its for non commercial purposes...meaning its not meant to be a viable product for the expected result to have any pull commercially. The excessive use of profanities, or the replication of industry level graphics/cinematography are only skill based.
If any of the content was has any intellectual value is merely coincidental and if there is any sudden virality to the content is not intended. ....basically.

Echo majority of the positive comments. Great effort and really looks the part. Stand outs are the set, lighting, picture quality.

Appreciate all the effort that must've gone into this so hate to give critical feedback but some items for me that didn't work.

Main one for me was the use of bad language or the over use. It wasvery off putting from the opening and took me out of the experience. The script felt a bit off in general, some repetitive narrative / lines didn't help. And part of that for me was down to delivery.

All in all a big thumbs up. Hope that doesn't come across too negative, just being honest. Just some tweaking to the script and delivery for me. Well done all involved.

I really enjoyed this! I loved the slot into the Romulus timeline - I've been thinking it'll be a fascinating direction to play some RPG scenarios or short stories. I thought the actors were great - I enjoyed the characters, and I thought the premise of the two trapped together was pretty interesting. I think there might be more to be done with the concept, though.

That set looked amazing! I was really impressed with how well dressed it was. It genuinely looked part of the Alien universe, as did the costuming. The film looked well shot as well! I did kinda miss the Alien presence a little bit - but what you did with just that Neca wall-bust was pretty clever, as was the use of the CG tail. That took me by surprise, and I was genuinely impressed with it.

A really well put together fan production! Bravo to all involved!

I actually got quite absorbed into their conversation. I thought the sound editing and ambience of the scene worked really well and could have even been an audio book. With the time they had to tell a story and flesh out the characters they did really well. I actually caught myself thinking I think I like these guys. I actually got a little invested in their plight. I enjoyed it.

The set was fairly impressive. The acting was competent, especially moments with the actress. The story wasn't very interesting, as such story there was, but they only had a single set to work with. I'd be interested to see a second effort, but with a story with some real meat on its bones.

Wow this is much better than I'd expect for a fan short. Great use of limited resources! I can't believe they actually got that Neca Alien head to look convincing and that the set looked as good as it did. Very smart allocation of resources, that is a big thing. Nice story and the acting was quite effective.

A full low budget film could be done in a limited space, be it a big room or a single level on a ship. Where characters are trapped, with a focus on a good story, nice dialogue and great performances. And of course, then the Alien just tears their world apart in interesting ways.

Loved the way the guy died. Quick, memorable, looked great. Good use of CGI there, really impressed.

I liked it and A for effort especially at the fan level. Sets look amazing, the shot of the alien looked great.

Only gripe is it felt like 20min of talking in a room. But it's a fan film and for fun so who cares, great job overall!
