Bong Joon Ho Would Like To Make An Alien Film

As he does the press rounds promoting his upcoming film Mickey 17, the Oscar winning writer & director of 2019’s “Parasite” Bong Joon Ho told The Los Angles Times that while big franchise films hold little appeal to him, the Alien franchise is one that stands out to him. And if he ever did step behind the camera to shoot the iconic Xenomorph, he might be interested in doing it with a twist.

“I’m not drawn to franchise films, but I did think at one point that I would like to do an ‘Alien’ film,” the 55-year-old Bong says over Zoom on a recent morning from New York, sitting beside his interpreter, Sharon Choi. He pauses, then adds with his trademark dry wit, “An ‘Alien’ musical.”

Bong Joon Ho Would Like To Make An Alien Film

The music comment may be more of a joke about a previous conversation with Mickey 17 star Robert Pattinson than any serious comment about what he would do with an Alien film, but Bong Joon Ho is certainly no stranger to the creature or horror genres, having previously helmed The Host.

Thanks to Nightmare Asylum & skhellter for the news and context behind the musical joke.

I have to say the musical episode of LEXX back in the day really suited the series. Funnily enough it was actually one of the more serious LEXX episodes there was. It had a back story to tell about the Brunnen-G and really actually worked well narrating their story. Maybe there would be a way to work it into the Alien universe, perhaps a back story about the Engineers would be an interesting way to narrate the story but I fear it would be too out there for any executive I can think of. Still it's an original idea I'd never thought of!

Well, I always liked Bong Joon Ho's The Host and he certainly handle monsters effects back then well, so I'd liked to see something again in that vein, and if he decided to make a proper Alien movie, that would interest me.

I can't wait to see Khonji's work in Mickey 17

the storytelling, the visuals, the way he handles horror, the themes in all his movies.

Out of all living directors he's one of, if not the best suited for an Alien movie.

Quote from: wmmvrrvrrmm on Mar 09, 2025, 12:05:17 PMI linked the idea of him making an Alien movie until I read that he wanted to make a musical, but I'd assume he was talking in a light hearted way

Yeah, his comments about it being a musical are a joke. It's a gag he keeps returning to during this Mickey 17 press tour, after an extensive conversation he had with Pattinson about not being particularly fond of them.

I think he'd be a very good fit for an Alien film. Tonally it'd probably be closer to Resurrection than anything else ever done in the series, and its satirical slant would probably be blunt in a way that makes Rain's situation with her transfer request being denied at the start of Romulus feel subtle in comparison, but that's all part of the appeal of his work for me.

I revisited Snowpiercer the day after seeing Mickey 17 and yeah, as far as his genre stuff goes, he's got the juice.

Musical part was a joke, but knowing his style I wouldn't be suprised If it actually would have some musical elements, If he would ever get a chance to make it. His movies often were a blend of various genres. Well, it's not gonna happen, but I would be excited to see what madness he could bring to the series.

The idea of an Alien musical has always been a novelty to me. As long as it's not deemed canon I'd be fine with it. However seeing as we are getting back on our feet I'd rather wait till the next hiatus.

Bong joon ho is a legend! Snowpiercer, The Host, and Okja are some of my favorites of his. Would love to see him make an alien film!

Haha, I just came back from watching Mickey 17. Some of the aesthetics reminded me of Alien. I remember really enjoying The Host. I'm really curious about what an Alien movie directed by him would be like, but on the other hand, I really do not want to see Alien come anywhere close to being a comedy again.

Don't know why directors talk like that. Even if he's kidding about the musical angle. Would be nice to hear a established director say good things on a alien film and sound very promising then execution is great in the end

Regarding the musical angle, that's very much Bong being tongue in cheek and riffing on a prior conversation about musicals that he and Pattinson had on this press tour.

Anyways, Bong Joon-ho would be incredible for an Alien movie. Look at his creature feature in The Host, and the scathing political satire in... everything. Just an incredible body of work all around.

Tonally, there's a good chance he might land closer to Resurrection than to any other film in the franchise. But I would be pretty ok with that, myself.

Mickey 17 is almost certainly going to bomb at the box office, though, so I don't see 20th reaching out to him any time soon.

Ah, well. I cannot wait to see Mickey 17 after work tonight!
