Fede Álvarez Talks Alien vs. Predator Movie Ideas!

It wasn’t too long ago that we were unsure we’d ever see another Alien vs. Predator attempt on the big screen… but now it seems the winds are changing and that it’s all but inevitable. With the Alien and Predator franchises both in much better places than they were in the late 2010’s, speculation has increased about another go around for the interstellar match-up.

Director Fede Álvarez recently spoke at a Q&A after a Collider hosted screening of Alien: Romulus. There he told Collider’s Steve Weintraub that he feels positive about AVP happening again in the future and that he’d like to potentially collaborate with Prey & Badlands director Dan Trachtenberg.

“I can’t speak for Dan. At some point, once there’s another Alien, and I know he’s working on a sequel to Prey, one day if we feel like, ‘Yeah, that’s what we cannot wait to see,’ I think that’s a movie we could do.”

Álvarez went on to elaborate on how he’d like to do it, where the audience might not know it’s an Alien vs. Predator film until they’re in the theater.

“The way I would do it, most likely, if it could be done this way… It’s harder to keep secrets online… The best AVP will be the one that you don’t know is AVP until the other guy shows up. You think you’re watching a Predator movie, and then they land in some place and there are creatures, and fucking hell, it’s a Xenomorph. That would get me. ‘Fuck yeah!’ You’d go crazy. Or vice versa, you’re in an Alien movie, and then suddenly a mysterious creature is there, and you can hear that sound, and you see the cloak, and you go, ‘Is that a fucking Predator?’ And then turns out it is. That would be the way to do it, don’t you think? Once you put it in the title, it’s like, ‘Spoiler alert.’”

The idea of an AVP film perhaps not being labeled as one brings to mind comments from last year, where 20th Century Head Steve Asbell said that another AVP would “probably” happen but that

“It wouldn’t be in the way you think. Not in the way that it will just be called Alien vs. Predator or anything like the original movies”

With director Dan Trachtenberg’s next Predator film ‘Badlands’ taking place in the future and on another planet, the setup for AVP may be coming sooner than we think…
