[Rumor] Ellen Ripley May Reappear In Alien Romulus 2

Update 23/01/2025 @ 20:55 GMT: Fede Alvarez has since responded to the reports of this rumour on Twitter, flatly denying it as “fun gossip.”

Update 26/01/2015 @ 08:24am: Daniel Richtman has since clarified that this information relates to an apparently separate project to Alien Romulus and is not connected to the sequel.

According to a new rumour shared by prolific industry insider Daniel Richtman, the powers that be at 20th Century Studios are considering Ellen Ripley’s return to the Alien franchise in the follow-up to 2024’s hugely successful Alien Romulus.

“For the next Alien movie, they’re considering bringing back Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) using de-aging technology.”

It should go without saying to take this rumour with a healthy dose of salt, but Richtman has proven himself somewhat accurate with Alien scoops in the past. He was the first to disclose that the film was known Alien Romulus, as well as the existence of a character in the film called Rook.

Though, in an interview with Alien vs. Predator Galaxy writer/director Fede Alvarez would refute Richter’s claim that Phoebe Waller-Bridge was ever in talks to portray the damaged synthetic.

While not as controversial as resurrecting Sir Ian Holm to portray Rook in Alien Romulus, de-aging effects are still an unperfected technique and the latest versions of the technology rely on AI which is another minefield itself.

Ellen Ripley actually appeared in the background of Alien: Romulus, presumably safely sleeping away aboard the Narcissus shuttle that could be spotted in the docking bay on the Romulus module. And given Fede Alvarez’s fondness of Alien: Out of the Shadows, a novel which depicts an adventure set between Alien and Aliens that sees Ripley awoken from hypersleep after Ash’s uploaded consciousness redirects the shuttle, it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch that this might be a story direction that the writer/director would be interested in.

Speaking most recently about the progress on Alien: Romulus 2, Fede Alvarez explained that he wanted to explore uncharted waters.”

“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.

I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before.”
