Behind the Scenes of the Alien Earth Trailer

When Alien: Romulus hit the big screen, some cinemas in the United States showed a short teaser trailer for Noah Hawley’s upcoming Alien: Earth. That teaser was later released online to Alien fans worldwide in September, and showed what appeared to be a CGI Alien. Apparently not!

According to a new behind-the-scenes page on the website of Rebecca and Kevin Joelson, the Executive Producer and Director of Photography of the teaser trailer, that teaser actually featured a practical suit of a Xenomorph (which seems to have had the reflection of the Earth applied to it later).

According to the Joelson’s website the teaser was filmed in Bangkok so it’s safe to say that this suit is one constructed by Weta for Alien: Earth, but whether or not they’re using a hero or stunt suit we cannot be certain. This incarnation of the Xenomorph looks to be much more similar to ADI’s take on the design in the later films.

While walking the red carpet at the Emmy’s, The Hollywood Reporter had the chance to talk to showrunner Noah Hawley about the upcoming series where he spoke about whether the approach Alien: Earth would be taking with the series’s effects.

“Mostly practical. I prefer that. Obviously there’s some CG, but I always want to feel it in the space and have the actors reacting to real things. I had a guy in a rubber suit. I had WETA working for me. It’s so exciting.”

They most certainly are not.  ;D

But you know, it makes me a little sad too. Personally I'm interested in art as the free vision of group of artists, as an unique artistic proposition, not as a smoothed, formatted product tailored to satisfy as many fans as possible.

Focusing on what pleases the most people is what got us the terrible "Get away from her, bitch!" moment in Alien: Romulus, for example. It's a terrible thing.

It will continue to be a question of our personal taste.
I won't convince the fans of Feral, but nobody will convince me that Feral or Earthy have a good design.
For me they are on the same (lowest) level.

I've been pondering SiL's comments on the lack of the erotic side of the alien, which was prevalent implicitly or explicitly, in the original giger design, feel free to jump in and correct me as my actual point is wider. The point I'm coming to is that there is something missing, and has been missing in all future iterations of Giger's alien since the first film. I watched the original Thing (Carpenter) last night and thought about this thread and all the different hosts etc, and thought, well I'm blown I never saw the connection between the films from this angle before. The alien designs are missing something that make them what they should be. Without this missing element then they are constrained or the design crew is in comparison to other films like the Thing where they can really go to town on different forms of the alien based on the host ... dog/human etc. as their isn't that giger aesthetic. If the writers and designers could nail essence of giger's aesthetic to the alien franchise and work out what this magic sauce is that keeps an alien a giger alien as the franchise evolves then it prevents what some of us fear here the design going into rubber suit B movie territory. My personal thoughts are the design team's leader's strategy/working theory of it all here is "we are constrained by the original design, what can we do now to make it sell well again at the BO, when they should have the strategy of Giger gave us something special how do we live up to it in the wealth of possibilities the aesthetic affords us." Two very different strategies or ways to go to fulfill their design brief, and I'm afraid we've been seeing the idea that they are constrained in the films for a while which is bringing out the comic B film side to the alien.

I'm coming to the conclusion that Feral and Earthy were in the car together when they crashed into the wall.

Sorry, for me it's just bad and I'm really surprised that some people actually like it.
    but hey, that's ok.

Honestly, I'm the last person who doesn't still give this thing some hope and will cheer loudly if everything turns out well.
But what's shown so far really just looks bad.

That explains the first few inches but that face keeps going.

Also frankly you're all so sheepish around this slight Alien redesign. You could appreciate the variations...

I like the neomorphs and even the deacon. I'd be down for more bizarre biomechanoids.

This is just a normal alien, done really badly though.
