Alien: Romulus Ends Theatrical Run With 350 Million – Continues Success With Strong Streaming Debut

Since the last time we checked in on its impressive box office debut and subsequent strong weekends, Alien: Romulus has finally left cinemas while passing one last milestone.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film has passed 350 Million USD worldwide, currently sitting at $350,423,353 total and $105,282,126 domestically.

The majority of the film’s total gross came from the international market, accounting for 70% of the movie’s earnings. Romulus performed exceptionally well in China, which brought in a third of the total gross and was the country’s second biggest 2024 Hollywood release behind Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

With those returns, Alien: Romulus is the second most successful film in the franchise in both opening weekend and total gross. It didn’t quite catch Prometheus’ massive numbers, but is likely seen as just as much of a success by the studio given its slimmer production budget of around 80 million. Alien: Romulus also significantly outperformed the last theatrical Alien film, Alien: Covenant, bringing in over 100 million more than that film.

Reception to the film was generally positive, with an 80% on the Rotten Tomatoes critic-based ‘Tomatometer’, and 85% for the site’s audience rated ‘Popcornmeter’. The aggregate on Metacritic was slightly lower but still generally positive, with its ‘Metascore’ at 64 and user score at 7.2. The film also received a B+ from the theatrical audience polling site CinemaScore.

Our own website held a poll for fans about their thoughts on the film, which also trended positive by 75%. See the final results below:

As of October 15th, Alien: Romulus is now available on video on demand streaming platforms, and has continued its strong performance there. The movie debuted number one on the iTunes/AppleTV charts within 24 hours of release. It also did well on other streaming platforms, currently #4 on Amazon Prime Video, and #5 on Fandango at Home (Formerly Vudu).

The physical version of the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DvD will be coming a bit later on December 3rd.
