In the weeks since the very successful release of Alien: Romulus, concept artists involved with the film have been showing off some of their incredible work developing the look and vibe of the film. Since we posted about an initial batch of concepts shared to social media, we’ve had loads more of incredible artwork that’s been shared by the artists themselves.
It’s honestly been difficult to keep up with all the amazing concept art that’s coming up online, which it why it would be so nice to have a big coffee table book to collect them all in. Please make it happen, 20th Century Studios & Titan Books!
We’ve collected another round of concept art from the skilled artist who worked on this project. If you somehow haven’t seen it yet, beware Spoilers for Alien: Romulus below.
Starting with Artist Matthew Savage, the man responsible for the design of the spacecraft in the film, the mining hauler ‘Corbelan’, we have some new pieces of the imposing atmosphere processor of the Jackson’s Star mining colony.
Alien Romulus: During post-production I got called into do some work on the atmosphere processor matte shots and how the design of structure looked during this time period, Fede’s brief was to keep the classic silhouette but imagine that the 1979 miniature builders and made it and covered it with similar details as the Nostromo miniature. swipe from early sketches.
Jumping inside the Corbelan to take a look at the work we did in the cockpit, Fede Álvarez main direction (other then to use Nostromo design language) was to keep it cramped to evoke the feeing of kids heading off in their first car. Swipe for different views and visuals
Matthew also recently shared some concepts for his EEV design and the Corbelan airlock.
Alien Romulus: Cryo Beds / Escape pod. I’ve wanted to design an EEV ever since watching Alien 3 for the first time as a teenager. The honey comb layout was a requested from Production Designer, Naaman Marshall and with a little bit of tweaking we got the silhouette looking like the weyland yutani logo (10 out of 10 if you spotted that). Swipe for early sketches.
You can follow Matthew’s work over on his Instagram.
Artist Nick Stath utilized his interior design background to create a tall yes claustrophobic corridor for the conveyor belt leading into the hive. The work of Syd Mead was also an inspiration in his design of the security room the protagonists gear up in before proceeding into said hive.
If you’d like to see more of Nick’s work, give him a follow on Instagram or ArtStation.
Alex Nice recently posted his concepts for the opening sequence of the film, where Weyland-Yutani scientists use a laser cutter to free the ‘Big Chap’ Xenomorph from his deep space chrysalis.
I was invited by Director Fede Álvarez and PD Naaman Marshall to help on Alien: Romulus.
Here is some of my design work and conceptual previs I did for the prologue asteroid opening sequence. The final result looked phenomenal and the little animated clip I threw together ended up looking similar in the film’s opening title sequence.
You can see more of Alex’s work over on his Instagram or ArtStation.
Returning Alien series artist alumni Dane Hallett posted some further visual explorations of the creatures in this film, showing differing aesthetic details and colorations.
One of the original ideas of Alien: Romulus was to have the ‘Offspring’ creature continue to evolve during its confrontation with Rain. Ultimately the only evolution it had in the film was the growth of its tail.

Jerad S. Marantz worked with Weta on an early design for the adult Xenomorph.
I had the honor of working on Alien Romulus with Michael Smale and his team over at Weta. It’s always such a great experience working with Weta and Weta DEV. Like every creature designer, the Xenomorph and HR Giger’s work was a huge inspiration growing up. Giger’s design is so specific and so signature that this is pretty much the first time I’ve ever attempted anything in his world. I’m such a huge fan of Giger’s work and the works of so many other influential artists, but it’s only when I’m hired on these projects that are actually play with these iconic characters, so I was very excited to get this assignment.
Jerad also posted a few videos showing off his Xenomorph model over on his ArtStation.
You can check out more of his work over on Instagram.
Joshua Viers posted some additional works of his on the cryo lab, the interior of Tyler’s colony trailer, and one of the station transit cabs. The transit cab would be one of the environments with a more ‘Aliens’ film feel, as the movie planned a bit of an aesthetic shift between the first two films as it progressed.
Check out more of Joshua’s art on Instagram or ArtStation.
Col Price did a number of conceptual works illustrating the dark and gloomy feel of the colony. Here are some recently posted new concepts of the Jackson’s Star main throughfare street, and Rain’s walk over to Tyler’s trailer.
More of Col’s work can be found on his Instagram and ArtStation.
Pablo Dominguez shared his works of some alternative designs for the Weyland-Yutani Echo Probe in the film’s intro scene. Also posted were new planetary concepts, and a number of moody pieces showing the Corbelan rising through the atmospheric clouds during its rough ascent.

Artist Valentin Petrov recently posted earlier concepts of the Renaissance Station, where the Remus and Romulus modules were a bit more separated rather than the connect saucer design we saw in the final film.
If you’d like to give Valentin Petrov a follow you can do so on his ArtStation or Instagram.

Absolutely love the posture and the way the Offspring is carrying itself in those pieces. Love or hate the design, whatever, but there's no denying based on stuff like this that Dane really knows how to sell the character of the creatures he puts on the page.
These pieces also remind me a bit of:

From The Empty Man.
Yep. That's exactly what Mike described having seen the pre-viz of in the early cut of the film that he watched early this year as well.
It just turned into a regular xenomorph?

Man, it all looks so cool. I love this whole concept art stuff.
The skin peeling off to reveal the Alien form underneath absolutely matches the description of what Mike saw.
And in the book absolutely credit the artists with the images. I'm sure the artists would be happy to help sort it out any confusion.
I'd have preferred that.
I wonder what was going on with the blanket octopus-like appendages that the offspring had? ...Or if it was just the artist going wild (which is also cool).
