Great pod. Agree with @Corporal Hicks overall views on this one. In fact it got me thinking that the last time I had an equally enjoyable experience watching an Alien film in the cinema was 1986 (Aliens). The others Alien 3 (Bitterly angry), Alien Resurrection (disappointed), Prometheus (on the fence), Covenant (pissed off).

I didn't say it was anything but hearsay. I was simply ruminating the potential that it could suggest that and put that particular strain of naysaying to bed.

(I have never read anything that indicates Scott disliked what Cameron did. The fact they nearly collaborated on a new film at one point suggests to me the exact opposite.)

Yes! because Scott is a producer, and it is clear as day his fingerprints/inputs are all over the creative tail end of Romulus. If he did indeed have a problem with J.C.'s take, he wouldn't include elements that strongly hint at its existence. He'd push to go in the opposite direction.

Hinting at there being an egg layer, which if we are to believe the continuity of Prometheus and Covenant - were created from scratch through mad science and not laid, then this would be the first hint at the opposite being true. - againt the naysayer's point.
I'm still not sure how that's relevant. Not sure what's being miscommunicated here, but suffice it to say Scott could hypothetically be fine with the idea of an alien laying eggs, while the naysayers could still be correct that he dislikes Cameron's Queen. An ovipositor is a female organ, good sir! What you are referring to is a cock, willy, johnson, penis, or whatever nomenclature you prefer; its root anchored to the base of the pelvis, perpetually erect, and resulting in the Newborn f**king itself 24-7.

Even for a Frenchman, it was too much.

Hicks and Collating stated that the weird opening on the creature was its navel.
I have to disagree as the creature had a very prominent navel. I believe the weird star shaped opening is sexual in nature.
Here's the clearest pic I could find and you can clearly see a navel above the star shaped opening.

FWIW, the moment I saw that, along with all the other obvious 'Resurrection' connotations, I assumed it was a tribute to the original Newborn's design, which had a very obvious vaginal slit with a facehugger-like ovipositor slithering out of it, to visually infer hermaphroditism. It was digitally removed for the eventual film.

But the director is now on record claiming he had no clue as to how alike the concept was to the Newborn and... I'm honestly unsure whether to buy that. The similarities seem too obvious.

Quote from: Scorched Vuvalini on Sep 13, 2024, 02:33:50 AMEven if a comment from Alvarez provided some kind of special insight into Ridley's feelings on Aliens (I'm not sure how it would, without engaging in quite a bit of stretching), the mere concept of the Offspring potentially laying eggs is not relevant, as far as I understand. Aliens laying eggs is not something Scott was fundamentally opposed to.

That's not exactly what I was referring to. There are people in the community of the belief that Scott hates the queen. QuoteRidley Scott: Loose on this ship, this new alien (its father had died after planting the seed) grows very quickly and begins to lay new eggs in the bowels of the ship. It lives to propagate and must next find food for its offspring - in this case the crew members of the Nostromo upon whom the young aliens can feed in their eggs until a new host comes along prodding the eggs. Then the cycle begins all over again. (Film Review - v29 n11 November 1979 "We played with fire making Alien" director Ridley Scott tells Dave Badger, p26-27)

As a bird owner, "cloaca" has become one of my favorite words, and thank you for using it. :D  Seeing it in the wild always makes my day.

More on topic: Alvarez did indeed state something along those lines outright in that recent Collider interview.

QuoteFirst of all, I love the design. How did you decide on the Offspring, to put that X around the genital? And did Disney or anyone give you any feedback?

ÁLVAREZ: It was part of the whole process of designing that creature. I thought it would probably be sexless — not in a binary way, for sure — and that it was probably something that would lay eggs. They have an egg-laying sort of thing.

Although appreciate the real practical effects of the Offspring aka engineer/xeno/ real life   super tall basketball player. It still doesn't gel. The Big Chap is relegated to a back story and looked really shit. And the Scorched was a try hard Grid from Avp.
The Alien/Aliens dont even run or stand up. Just crouch. Such a wasted opportunity 📡
And the whole Narciccus reveal is clearly not a easter egg. Worried about this Marvel Romulus prequel. The artist is standard superhero art and yh worried 📡

It occurs to me that 'fan service' is kinda the wrong term. Fans tend to hate it (in any franchise). It's on the nose so as to make less invested viewers feel more familiar with whichever series it is. It's more 'casual service'.

e.g. for those that vaguely remember seeing Aliens twenty years ago, GAFHYB fills their hearts with glee. But not us.

Great review guys! While not bothering me that much, I absolutely thought that the repeated lines would be the death of @Corporal Hicks.

The look and feel of Romulus was like a warm blanket. The sound design was top notch. Shout out the laser sound fx from the opening sampling the Big Chap's scream. The miniature and creature work were a breath of fresh air since the last two installments being more CGI heavy. Rook really wasn't a problem for me, but I could do without seeing through a monitor during the final half.

Andy was a real standout. I definitely want to see more of him in the futur. Isabella Merced is a scream queen in the making. I would have loved to see Kay make it to the end alive. Cailee Spaeny really made Rain her own character while not relying too much on Sigourney Weaver's Ripley.

The Offspring's appearance got spoiled for me hours before watching the movie because of a damn YouTube thumbnail. Still, the moment you first see the full grown Offspring on all fours, stuck with me long after the movie ended.

I first saw Romulus in 4DX and it was quite the experience. My friend, who isn't really a hardcore fan of the franchise, loved the movie.

Can't wait to see what's coming next from Fede and co.

As always great podcast gentlemen. I feel like I align somewhere between Hicks and Ridgetop in scale with my enjoyment of the film. While I've only seen the film once, I'd say the good far out way the bad stuff in this. My biggest gripe might be the dodgy CGi of rook and the get away from her you bitch line.

Hicks I have to admit that the offspring's appearance stuck with me too. I kept imagining it coming up my stairs and then ducking to get into my bedroom haha. It's great that THAT moment brought back some of the horror of the first film for me.

I will say that while I really enjoyed the film part of me sides a little with xenomorphine. I feel like it could have been even MORE tense with more Xenomorph  xx121 scenes.  Great job again guys! I really appreciate all of the hard work you do to put these together. I'm looking forward to more Romulus deep dives. I'm surprised you guys didn't talk about the possible Ripley easter egg.
