Updated: Alien Back in Cinemas for 45th Anniversary with Alien: Romulus Preview!

The last time we had a wide re-release of the original Alien in cinemas was 2017, where a special Alien Day screening was paired with preview footage for the then upcoming Alien: Covenant. Now with Alien: Romulus on the horizon, 20th Century Studios has announced on social media that the original Alien will once again be returning to theaters for Alien Day and the film’s 45th Anniversary.

With the post we have a new variant on the classic Alien poster, sporting the ’45th Anniversary’ tag below the credits.

Currently confirmed cinemas in the US are AMC, Cinemark, and Regal. We don’t have concrete details if this screening is also planned for the UK, so we’ll keep you posted.

UPDATE:

It looks like just as we had with the 2017 Alien Day screening, fans will have an opportunity for a sneak peek of the next upcoming movie. The Australian cinema Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace has specified in their event details that a clip for Alien: Romulus will be dropping with the screening:

A special 45th anniversary screening of one of the most acclaimed and iconic sci-fi films of all time in a 4K Digital Restoration.

Also includes a special sneak peak extended clip of the new film ALIEN: ROMULUS (releasing in August).

We still don’t have ticket pre-sales live for US theaters or any details regarding UK screenings, so hopefully we’ll have additional verification soon. But it’s looking likely that fans will have a chance to see a clip from Romulus for Alien Day!

Update #2 (12/04/2024): According to a listing on the showings for Cinemark, the preview, which will show before Alien, “will be a special look at Alien: Romulus featuring a discussion with Alien director Ridley Scott and Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez.”

I hope my AMC doesn't put this on a small screen.

Went to go see the rerelease of Jurassic Park last year and it was on the smallest possible screen they had, not much bigger than my decent sized tv at home. Didn't even feel worth it. Especially compared to seeing Jaws rereleased in IMAX before that, which was awesome.

But never on a proper theater screen. I would like to experience the "cinematic" Alien on the biggest screen available...

The only way to see it.

I first saw it on a sh*tty, full-screen VHS tape in late 1983. I didn't mind, though. I was so caught up in the storytelling to notice that 50% of the image was missing. Lol.

I'm waiting for showtimes to open up at my preferred theatre chain (Harkins), they list 'Alien' as coming for Alien Day but haven't offered any ticket sales yet.

In the meantime my dad and I got tickets to see 'The Mummy' on the 27th.

Depending on where you live there are usually independent theater chains and revival houses that will be granted the license to screen certain films. Here in Los Angeles they screen the various ALIEN sequels every few years or so. There was a big marathon planned by a company called Nostalgic Nebula to screen the original four films on Memorial Day weekend but Disney pulled the license when they announced the re-release of ALIEN for April 26th. Kevin Smith mentioned that Warner Bros. had done the same for the early BATMAN films around the time of the THE FLASH being released in theaters.

I remember the director Stephen Hopkins in an interview with AVP Galaxy said there was consideration to have a 30th anniversary showing of Predator 2 but cancelled when unsatisfied with The Predator 2018 reception, 😑 that really grinds my gears.

Perhaps IF they decide to give the upcoming Prey's sequel and BadLands the theatrical treatment they may give Predator2 a much needed re-release, I would absolutely love a marathon cinema extravaganza of these movies, even when the instalments are a mixed bag I love the Alien and Predator Legacy. 😊

Just for clarification, this is worldwide? Not just for the Aussie anniversary screenings?

I guess we're getting the extended Romulus clip for Alien day then?

Would be a bad idea to release it in cinemas exclusively, otherwise you end up with dozens of iffy phone recorded bootlegs on the internet.
