Dan Trachtenberg Talks Prey Sequel & Emmy Nominations

As we await the rumored home release of Prey, the latest Predator film has been racking up quite the accolades with a recent six Emmy nominations (the winners will be announced in September) including Outstanding Television Movie. Prey’s director Dan Trachtenberg, who was personally nominated for Outstanding Directing, recently spoke to The Playlist to talk about the amazing achievements. Naturally, they also asked him about a sequel!

“I can’t really say anything about that right now, but I’ll say while we were finishing the movie, we were having really exciting conversations. The studio, myself, the writer, and the producers about what crazy things could we do next. And I’ve never stopped, no one stopped thinking about how cool things could be going forward.”

Discussing the Emmy nominations, Dan told The Playlist about when the messages first started coming through!

“That morning, in my sleepy haze, my kid was going off to camp and I was back in bed and I got a buzz on the phone and then two buzzes, and I was like, “O.K., that’s not good. That’s just normal morning stuff.” And then my phone started buzzing like crazy, and I woke up, I grabbed the phone and it was just normal text chains that I’m on, nothing. But then one text came in from a friend who said, “Emmy,” and I was like, “Oh my God.” And then I texted the producer, I was like, “Emmy’s?” And then he was like, “Yeah, dude, six.” And he sent me the thing for all the different categories and I was like, “Oh.” I didn’t consider it. I didn’t consider it would get that kind of appreciation. It was pretty rad in short.”

Actress Amber Midthunder, who played Prey’s main character Naru, also spoke about sequel progress back in January of 2023 where she coyly responded that a sequel to Prey was something that she had “probably” discussed with Dan.

“I mean, I don’t have a date for you. This is not an announcement, but I’m not saying it’s not. We talk all the time about all kinds of things and that was probably one. I’m ready. I loved that experience. I love that movie, and I would be happy to see where else we can take it”.

In all this time, has he never been offered one for a Predator sequel?
After the plan for him to lead Predator 2 fell through, and Predator 3 went into development hell, cameos at the end of Predators and The Predator were either discussed or offered.
I think it's very telling that he came back for Predator: Hunting Grounds though, I feel like the game's audio tapes played a big part in that decision. It allowed him to do something more than just sign off on his likeness and recording a couple clips for gameplay.
I believe there was an interview somewhere or I think a tweet from big A himself that he was glad to be back in the role doing something big. Which it is pretty big than simple cameos because we get to see his story expand beyond 87 from a mercenary to a dedicated Predator Hunter.

In a recent interview, it was nice to see Dan acknowledge both Arnold and Danny Glover and say there's still time for them both to come back in a sequel. I'm sure they'd both be up for it so long as they were given actual roles in whatever project it could hypothetically be, and not just cameos.

I had an idea, what if they based it on true events but changed it abound kind of like Brotherhood of the wolf.
I was thinking what if you took the someone like vlad the impaler and msde hin a predator. Mayve hes deforned and lack mandibles and was abandoned of warth becuse if it where ge is raised by people or have jack the ripper be some crazy ptedator that has a taste for Victorian prostitutes. I don't know it just an idea

Ehh I don't want her back personally. Do something different again in a different timeline. I'd rather it not become serialised. There's so much history to explore and times periods to set it in its a waste doing the same thing again. They also need to do something fresh again like having the Predator win this time or something. You go in to these films knowing what to expect. You have a hero, loads of other people die, hero gets beaten up and outsmarted and nearly dies but then manages to outsmart it in someway and they kill it. Its getting tiresome. The threat of the Predator has pretty much died off because they always lose in the end.

Also, going back to 1.85:1 would be nice too. Ever since these films have went to anamorphic they just don't feel the same.

Dan I'm sure got a few cool ideas on where to go next with the Predator franchise, things just hasn't reached the stage to disclose to the public about it probably. Personally, I got no issue with Dan helming another Predator flick, he's proven he knows what works for the franchise and what new ideas can apply to it.

The only reason not to would be to make room for a new idea If anything i hope. . Amazed how much effort go's into TMNT and spiderman and how little into the predator series when it has so many possibilities without a multiverse.
  8. XENOMORPHOSIS
@Enjoy chances there are non disclosure agreement contracts that have been signed, there still debating to movie forward on a new project and have yet to be given the green light, too early to tell if development on another film is a guarantee.
  9. XENOMORPHOSIS
Whether a direct follow up to Prey continuing with Naru or further elaborating on a backstory to the Predator lost tribe of Predator 2 or a new Predator story set in another point of history would be fascinating to explore.
