New Documentary Aliens Expanded Starts Crowd-Funding Today!

If you were around in 2020 you will have likely been aware of In Search of Darkness, a crowd-funded documentary devoted to the science-fiction of the 1980s being produced by the team at CreatorVC. Now CreatorVC is back, along with Alien, Ridley Scott and James Cameron historian Ian Nathan, with a new documentary focused solely on Aliens!

Aliens Expanded is aiming to be more than just another behind-the-scenes look at Aliens, it’s a look into the impact it made on cinema, on culture and on the people like you and I that run and visits fan communities such as Alien vs. Predator Galaxy. It’s a look at what makes Aliens so enduring and so magnetic.

Written and Directed by Ian Nathan (Author, Alien Vault) and from the producers of In Search of Darkness I-III and In Search of Tomorrow, Aliens Expanded will be the ultimate companion to James Cameron’s Aliens, enhancing your viewing experience with new insights and revelations.

Now in pre-production, our early outreach has already added several key interviewees, including Jenette Goldstein, Mark Rolston, and Carrie Henn, and we’ll continue to add further top names from the cast and crew throughout the year.

Joining them will be a supporting cast of top critics, commentators, film historians, fellow filmmakers, scientists, comic-book writers and game designers, building up a detailed picture of the sheer impact this film has had on so many people.

But what will make this documentary truly unique, is that our analysis will be shaped, supported, and energized by the fan communities that Aliens has inspired. From the project’s inception, we have worked directly with many of these groups and influencers (some of whom you will see in the documentary itself) to develop a concept that Aliens superfans will cherish.

Together, we will dig deep into the theories and opinions and pure passion that have built up around this masterpiece. Will you join us? Crowdfunding ends Oct. 1st!

As with CreatorVC’s previous documentaries, Aliens Expanded is made for the fans and is supported by the fans and to that end the team behind the upcoming documentary has begun a crowdfunding campaign that will go from the 6th of September through to the 1st of October.

The basic pledge includes a digital copy of Aliens Expanded, as well as your name in the credit and a digital copy of the soundtrack. The next pledge includes the digital copies, as well as a physical Blu-ray, 2 posters, a sew-on patch, a commemorative booklet and a certificate. You can go one step further and the next pledge includes a t-shirt! All pledges include access to a year-long celebration of Aliens, 20 hours of backer-only events, Q&As with the cast of Aliens, vidcasts and regular backer updates.

Please feel free to share any (serious/genuine) questions you have about the project.

Feel free to rephrase it however you wish, but something to the effect of "how much homework have you done on the other deep dives into this movie, given the inevitable comparisons that the superfans will make - aside from the focus on influence and inspiration over the practical - what are the new insights you'll be bringing?"

Their latest discussion piece said he "remains the most hands-on director in history".

    I can't take this project seriously. I just can't.

It's a component, sure, but as I keep repeating it seems to want focus more on the impact it had on people and on cinema, and as a franchise. CdL's involved in it too as a guest.

I think most folk are missing this point. Not sure if others have watched their previous docs but they are enjoyable.

I got my son's name in the credits of In Search of Tomorrow.

    Are casuals their target market?

Like if you give a shit about deep dive documentaries on the movie, you've probably seen the existing deep dives.

A couple of the social posts have been a bit strange. How do they argue Gale Anne Hurd was "unsung" when CDL actually went into some detail about her involvement in his documentaries? I've never read a making-of that didn't credit her considerable work in producing the film.

I don't need the T-shirt but I'll take the disc version for sure. Would have been cool if the Producer/executive would have got a kind of " this is my favourite scene" or a " this was the first time I watched Aliens" sound bite in the final version or something, but I think they are dreaming for 10 to 20  times the amount for one word before your name in the credits, righto boys  Don't think they really thought that one through.

I personally prefer the extended version as its just more of one of the best films ever made  8)

That and other various things previously mentioned's why "perfect sequel" just reads as flagellation to me because I do not think that it is, such hyperbole benefits nobody and worries me that's an indication this will not have much insight of note.

I love the cut from the Facehugger's fingers gripping to Ripley's fingers holding a drooping cigarette, I hate the Jordan family being the ones to find the derelict and one of them being the only survivor, just reminds me I am watching a fiction.

I think the only thing from the DC that feels missing from the theatrical is the scene with the colonists. It helps smooth out the jump between "they're in danger!" to "hey uh yeah we lost contact", which is a bit sudden and convenient in the theatrical cut.
  12. Cosmic Incubation
I more often than not prefer the pacing of the original cut, but I do appreciate some of the added scenes and details. I like the derelict scene, the scene where Ripley finds out about what happened to her daughter, seeing Hadley's Hope before the disaster helps punctuate the tragedy, and the turret scene is pretty cool.

I also mostly agree with BlueMarsalis and others that the special edition really kind beats you over the head with the motherhood themes, which I think strips away some of Ripley's agency. Or at least pigeonholes her more, if that makes sense.

It's still there in the theatrical cut for sure, but it's not quite as obvious or present as the special edition.
  13. BlueMarsalis79
I have went back and forth with this over the years but ultimately I swear by the theatrical cut.

I used to have difficulty putting why exactly into words but here it goes.

I just do not like as a woman, the way James Cameron writes women, in both Aliens and his Terminator films his respective protagonist's destiny's to become mothers at the end of the day. Failing and then succeeding at that apparent requirement, with a man Michael Biehn assisting and instructing, them to do that.

So the Special Edition only exacerbates my issues with the writing and presentation of that particular theme.
