Trachtenberg Talks Prey’s Comanche Dub & New Predator/Naru Stills From Empire Magazine

Empire Magazine have released August 2022’s issue of their ongoing film magazine featuring Avatar: The Way of the Water on the cover. Tucked away inside, there is a two-page article all about the new Predator film Prey. There’s a few new bits of information in there.

Empire have spoken to the Prey director Dan Trachtenberg and he speaks more about his inspiration for the Predator prequel – the Native American Billy Sole from Predator. Trachtenberg says that usually in a Predator film, people team up to take down the Predator but in Prey, the story is solely about Amber Midthunder’s character Naru beating the Predator by herself.

There are two new production stills that we’ve not seen before. One photo features the new Predator in the smoke/misty forest. The second new still is of Naru jumping through the forest. You can view the Empire pages here.

Trachtenberg repeats that Predator doesn’t have his shoulder cannon but has other tools at his disposal: “The Premise is David versus Goliath – I didn’t want to make Goliath smaller. It doesn’t have its plasma caster, but it does have heat vision and other tools.”

He goes on to say that he wanted to have very little dialogue in Prey – he originally intended it all to be in the Comanche language. Trachtenberg reiterates that the actors recorded all their lines in Comanche for the Comanche dub but “it’s a little more sophisticated than perhaps our memory of watching dubbed movies. There’s a lip-match [choosing words to match the actor’s mouth movements as closely as possible] that we do now. It won’t be like watching old kung fu movies”.

Yeah, my only complaint on that new still shot is the placement of the legs. It's rule of thumb in photography to not overlap limbs like that, it distorts the body. His legs are fine.
I mean that really depends on the photography and what you're trying to do. You want to overlap the legs like that in a lot of modelling and boudoir photography specifically for how it sims the body.

Great pose for an Alien, not a Predator.

True! I should have added it doesn't help in poses of movement or walking. It can really mess with the shapes.

The movie actually looks really cool from the preview, it's like no one remembers predator(2018) , Prey has that horror vibe which I love, they don't show the Predator to much, it's rated R, a new director who has a few good things under his belt and I think it's what the franchise needed, I'm excited to check it out!!
  5. SuperiorIronman
I don't think they reused anything for this. Nothing really stands out to me coming from another production. Maybe some edits have been made and I just can't tell but I'm not seeing it. As far as I can tell it looks like ADI got told to make Tractenberg's Predator and that's exactly what they did.

It would've made sense if Bryan Prince or Kyle Strauts was in the suit again but we got a new actor for this and the director wanted him to be sleeker. So I'd imagine the suit is fitted specifically for Dane DiLiegro. At best if Fugitive's armor was used for this, it was probably a basis for Feral's armor. We know they did do something like that for Fugitive's plasmacaster but even then, that's only the starting point. They're not using Fugitive's gauntlets as is if they did at all.

Usually when people decide to hate something, there's not much you can do. But they have the right to do so though, obviously.

Only thing that bothers me is that it's still too early to already hate it IMO.

Yeah, I'm really onboard with what we've seen of Feral! I'm really looking forward to a clearer look though, and I'm still apprehensive about the unmasked face, but so far I do love what we're seeing of him.

Yeah, they don't look the same at all.

Quote from: SiL on Jul 08, 2022, 12:27:48 AMThe feet might be the same but are we really going to complain about that...?

That does feel overly "just picking on anything," Tusk.

ADI didn't do the armour on The Predator, no. And they do look different.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but ADI did not make the armor, right? It was QuantumFX? Maybe cast your judgement towards the correct people. But also, notice that they aren't using the same pieces but likely new sculpts all around. As a guest, you cannot see attachments. Please login.

Those shoe string fry dreads look terrible. You can also already see they are still jacking up the mandibles. They will never learn how to do them proper

Looks like ADI is reusing the garbage wrist gauntlet armor from The Predator as well as the feet from that predator.

Also out of four Predator movies teaming up to beat the Predator only happens twice.

Unless everyone gets butchered pretty damn quick and most of the movie is basically the last act of Predator until the trappers show up. That would be cool.

I wouldn't be so sure she wins because how would the pred race know to come back again and again if there was no communication?

Maybe something about this quote, included in the OP...

Quote from: Master on Jul 07, 2022, 08:33:24 PMYeah, I remember what he said. The point is Predator have different proportions then human. Last two films made bubbleheads, but this one overdid it the other way around.

I disagree, but I don't think we'll truly know either way til we see it unmasked and in motion.
  13. Sorinwolf1
Regarding the bubble head many mentioned, I will add my 2 cents about it:
I wouldn't call them too big, fugitive had his lower mandibles sag too low which made them cover the neck, which also made the illusion of the head just standing on shoulders making it look big, also his forehead/crest is at a different angle than the jungle hunter, his is more like wolf being more inclined towards front and making his head peak bigger. Also the more longer and "puffy" the dreads are, the more larger the head seams, add the never fully closing mouth which adds to size and we have the image of a big head.
But if U look at the scenes were he lays on the lab desk with his mouth closed (they used a different mild for the head, no animatronics) his head looks very proportional.
Wolf predator had the se problem, but his face anatomy was ok, only the crest angle being the selling point for "big head" look.
Berserker...yeah no excuse his head is too big, even for his towering phisique, I blame thea files being to long which made his face being too alongated.

Quote from: Master on Jul 07, 2022, 08:14:13 PMThe head looks to small and out of proportion.

After P2 the heads became to big and silly looking. This is just bringing the head back to proportion
With The Predator having the worst of both worlds with Unmasked Fugitive's gigantic head and Upgrade's itty bitty head

I also think the thinner dreads make feral's head look so small in comparison to say Jungle Hunter
  16. Kailem
The more we're seeing of Feral, the more I like it.

It looks like it's wearing practically nothing as far as armour goes, with only the helmet being the major distinguishing feature; and it looks great! I've always liked the "Primitive Predator" idea/look, and this one's looking damn good!

Love that it's got a skull-like look, the exposed mandibles are great, and the lack of eyes makes it look really unique. Definitely a very cool mask!
  17. BlueMarsalis79
He wanted it sleeker, he's actually said this, forgive me I can't remember where though.

QuoteThe remorseless hunter-killer from space also has a new look. 'I wanted to make sure the head was more proportional to the body,' says the director. 'This predator is much slimmer and less armoured than it's ever been. It's more 'creature'. It's still hulking and ferocious.'

If this is the first encounter, the Feral not returning from a hunt would surely make other Predators interested.

I think Trachtenberg did mention on Twitter that this wouldn't be an origin story in response to the first time they've visited earth question. I always took that just as producer speak. Perhaps the first time this particular Predator or his clan has visited though.
