Updated: Julius Ohta Joins Marvel’s Alien As New Artist with Alien Relaunch in August!

With controversial artist Salvador Larroca’s imminent departure from Marvel’s Alien after the release of Alien: Annual #1, it seems Marvel will be relaunching their Alien line with a new #1 (as shown in August’s solicitations) under returning writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and new artist Julius Ohta!

PHILLIP KENNEDY JOHNSON AND JULIUS OHTA LAUNCH A NEW ALIEN EPIC! MAN, MACHINE, AND THE MOST TERRIFYING CREATURE IN THE UNIVERSE…IT’S AN EXPRESS ELEVATOR TO HELL, AND YOU’RE GONNA WANT TO BE ON IT!

A small colony of synths have settled in secret on a backwater moon. When a company of United System soldiers come to them for help retrieving biotechnology on a hostile planet that could be the key to saving humanity, the synths must decide whether the prospect of peace between man and machine is worth the risk of betrayal.

Julius Ohta Joins Marvel's Alien As New Artist with Alien Relaunch in August!

The above cover is the work of Björn Barends, and the issue will also have variant covers by Travis Charest, Carlos Magno, and Ryan Brown. The new series’ will begin August 2022, though we don’t have an exact release date yet! The series new artist Julius Ohta has previously worked on Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Wastelanders: Doom and Marvel’s Voices: Comunidades. Talking about working on Alien, Julius said:

“When I got invite to draw the new Alien series, I had a professional and standard reaction – I was glad to be invited and I was determined to make it the best work of my life. But then, a few minutes later, it came all at once – I understood that I was going to draw Alien… THE ALIEN. I freaked out (in a very good way) and then I knew the tremendous responsibility that is to be in this franchise.”

Marvel’s announcement about the relaunch, titled Alien: Icarcus, gives us more information about what we can expect from this new chapter of Marvel’s Alien.

“The series kicks off a chapter called ALIEN: ICARUS, which heightens the action in a similar way to how James Cameron’s 1986 Aliens did after the original film,” he continued. “In ALIEN: ICARUS, readers will meet the legendary Synthetic Special Operations Team, led by one of my favorite original Alien characters so far: an unstoppable synthetic named Freyja.”

“When disaster strikes a crucial United Systems planet, the entire human population of the system relies on Steel Team finding the long-deserted Weyland-Yutani Research and Development outpost on Tobler-9, one of the most hostile environments in the known universe. Steel Team’s the most bad-ass strike team in military history, and they’ve never met an organic life form that offered them the slightest threat…but they don’t know what’s waiting for them on Tobler-9,” he explained.

I liked bits and pieces of this latest Marvel-Alein run but to echo what others have said, making the synth team into super-heroes with axes and lightsabers and other melee weapons was completely stupid and nearly took me out of the entire storyline.

I also did not like how through all the carnage of slicing and dicing the xenos that the acid blood never came into play, at all?

Like obviously I understand they're synthetics and bad-ass elite fighters, but the reckless fighting having 0 repercussions in terms of the acid blood seemed completely dumb.

I want to give Disney the benefit of the doubt here because I hold out hope Alien will be revived to  its former glory, but stories like this just make that so hard.

Finished the last issue and the art on this one is insanely good!

    Spoiler
The panels detailing the final fight with the queen were absolutely gorgeous! Story wise I enjoyed the Blade Runner-esque introspection coming from Freyja and Eli. I also liked seeing the infected Lee take out the General after he admitted that promising synth citizenship was nothing more than a false promise. I would've been interested in learning more about what became of the Lee-abomination but I also like that it's somewhat vague with another stunning panel showing her become one with the hive. The only thing that didn't get fully addressed was whether they helped humanity with the kid's DNA or if they just said f**k those humans lol

All in all I think I'd rate this arc 8/10. I've come to really enjoy the 6 issue arc format and while he missed the mark at times overall I think Phillip Kennedy Johnson did a solid job during the course of his 19 issues. With that being said I'm now really excited to see what the new creative team will bring!

Is that @SiL on the cover??
yep its the goddess/woman/One in the Dark.  who is probably a character named lee who is currently going through the different abomination stages of the icarus strain of the pathogen after being bit by a mutated fly that was mutated by that strain .

I'd like to see it tied up, and I kinda like the idea of the hive mind being timeless (was that something that Vol 1 teased? I can't recall.) but there's just something about it being this modern creature I don't think sounds too satisfying.

I think that was something that was teased . I wouldn't be surprised if Lee isn't the first Goddess and that there was previous ones at a earlier time but the Hivemind just blends them all together .

also Charles Soule did a Q&A on twitter https://twitter.com/CharlesSoule/status/1621921509265506305 He'd like to write some Alien

Issue 5 was fantastic! This has definitely been my favorite arc so far from Marvel.

    Spoiler
In the beginning blurb/recap they mention the pathogen being responsible for abominations so I'm starting to think that the Goddess/Woman in the Dark is definitely an abomination who is evolving into a Fulfremmen/The Perfected from the RPG. When first reading through the "Heart of Darkness" campaign I speculated that the Fulfremmen was most likely influenced by the Goddess but after this issue I really think they may be one and the same.

In an era set after Aliens where marines have way more grounded in reality weapons, I dont see soldiers walking around with large axes or androids when there are much more effective weapons around for this time era. Assault rifles, grenades, napalm flamethrowers, Sadar, sonic wallbreakers etc. These new weapons and lightsabers etc dont fit into alien universe which is more grounded in reality and industrial era designs.

Yeah, I think this is a bad call. It just seems like one of those shorthand ways of trying to show how amazing Steel Team is compared to normal meatbag marines, but it just veers the tone of the series too far off base. I mean, sure we've had swords in Music of the Spears, but that was interesting in spite of that.

Some of the other elements that aren't explained - they irritate the hell out of me, but I have to wonder if they're left dangling for future arcs. I think I spoke about it on the Series 2 podcast, but I wonder how unfair I'm being disliking things like that if it's just another chapter in a story we haven't finished.

I dig the the whole idea of this entire line of Aliens being descended from something special. I dig the idea of a synthetic team - but they're running around with scifi melee weapons as a way to show off how strong and amazing they are, and it's just not there for me.

in issue #4 looks fantastic, even if that's another section I raised an eyebrow at, despite loving the visuals.
I find it funny how they make new designs of xenos that dont really make sense from how xenos work and some are clearly inspired by other franchises, like these small larvae xenos that goes inside the mouth of people: ripoff idea from starship troopers 2, and the writer dont even know how these tie in with xenomorph biology/lore, he never explains where they came from or how they are made, what causes facehuggers to become centerpide facehuggers that does things previous facehuggers couldnt, alpha alien etc. It just feel like thrown on the wall because its cool and new but have very little thought behind it and wont even bother trying to work into the lore and explain things, like bethesda: its just works, we dont know why mentality.

Theres clear walls of what one can do in the alien franchise and whats it built onto, we know from prometheus up to Alien resurrection how the technology of the world is like, military uses weapons that fire bullets, missiles etc.

In comes someone who now decide lightsabers is a thing of this world and laser guns, extremly large meele weapons like its medieval age again and somehow its effective against xenomorphs, and crossbows wtf? Dead orbit was great, and I wouldnt mind seeing more of that or heck aliens labyrinth or new earth war style dark comic, aliens dust to dust was great too. Heck I have several stories set in the alien franchise that uses the foundation of what is established and not create something that isnt fitting in that I would love to create into several comics and read.
Theres so much to use in this franchise theres no need to add technology from star wars to make it new and exciting....

I liked Dead orbit, But it played it very safe. How many Dead orbits can you make and retain a mainstream appeal?

Dead orbit is exactly what I want more of

QuoteHaven't heard anything from PKJ regarding another arc at this point so I think we may be getting a creative shake up. Time will tell but as I've said before, after an author writes a trilogy, I always feel that it's then time to give someone else a shot.
I hope you're right. PKJ would have to be at the bottom of my list for alien comic writers at this point.

Issue 4 was pretty crazy! But I have to agree that the melee weapons seem a bit silly. Although I am still thoroughly enjoying the premise of an all synth spec-ops team.

Wondering if Lee is turning into the Goddess or she's just an Abomination.

The art is fine, but seeing these people running around in their generic sci-fi outfits and wielding axes and crossbows just sucks.

When I ask myself what I would do differently, I just down know.

The Dark Horse comics gave us wackier things than laser swords
    All the f**king time, too.

remember Xenogenesis? This feels like a subdued version of that.
    This is true.
But, the good thing about the dark horse era was that most of their series were 3 to 6 issues, so if there was an artist or a writer that you didn't care for you could at least look forward to the next series which changes out the creative teams (more issues if you count their more expansive cross-overs but still there was an end in sight).
With marvel's formula, there's no telling how long we've gotta deal with their version of xenogenesis, and that is incredibly frustrating imo.
