Marvel Shows Off All of the Predator vs. Marvel Characters Variant Covers

As was done with Marvel’s relaunch of the Alien comics after the license was transferred from Dark Horse Comics, Predator will appear on the variant covers on a number of Marvel’s core series to celebrate the long awaited start of the new Predator comics. These covers feature speculative match ups with Marvel’s hero characters.

Originally scheduled for last summer, the launch of the Predator comic series was delayed because of the legal battle regarding the property. Though we had seen some of these covers early last year, and had a full list shortly after, Marvel has now given us a look at all 20 covers on their website:

“In anticipation of an all-new Predator stories coming to Marvel Comics later in July, the extraterrestrial hunter will also steal the spotlight on a series of chilling variant covers. Across twenty breathtaking pieces by the industry’s top talents, fans will get to witness their favorite Marvel Super Heroes in epic showdowns with the iconic and terrifying Predator.

Since making its debut in the landmark 1987 film, the remorseless alien killer has invaded pop culture in film, comic books, video games, and more. Now, the Predator begins a new conquest in a comic series launching this summer. Capturing the horrifying, unforgiving nature of Predator with classic Marvel Comics storytelling, these outstanding covers are sure to capture the imagination of both Marvel and Predator fans as they prepare for the launch of PREDATOR #1 by Ed Brisson and Kev Walker!

Check them all out now below and don’t miss your chance to enjoy this unparalleled mashup by collecting each Predator variant cover starting this July.”

A few of these variants will be available come July with the majority of them dropping the following month. The main Predator monthly series will finally be launching come July 6th, which will receive a number of its own variants as well. Recently, artist InHyuk Lee who was responsible for the cover art of the first Alien arc, showed off his Predator cover variant in the same style as Alien #1:

Can't you show a bit of creativity, goddammmit ? To be fair though I can see higher-ups poking artists with a stick whispeing into their ears: "Draw that thing people like"

The worst offender I've discvered is Predator: Forever Midnight. The cover is just a picture of the McFarlane Toys Celtic Predator.

I feel the Jungle Hunter design has just become the default "basic Predator" look. And to be fair, that's sort of how it's treated in the movies -- even P2 showed quite a few Predators with that armour or mask in different combinations. So it's not even being ordered to draw a specific Predator, so much as internalising that look as visual shorthand for one.

Historically they have. There's a huge variety of Predator designs on covers over the years.

Modern covers are getting lazier with designs -- the Alien covers are awful -- but it's a fairly recent trend.

I've been curious. Why is it with novels and comics covers, they use pre-existing Predators? Why is it always Jungle Hunter, City Hunter, or Wolf or Scar. Why don't artists make new Predator designs?
