Project Z survivor kits have some great stuff for civilians and corporates, but only about half of each kit is really useful for the Aliens aesthetic so you'll have some leftovers.

The AvP Miniature Wargaming Customs page on Facebook is the best place to ask for more.

Nice. Wet blending is something I just seem to lack the finesse to pull off satisfactory.

On another note, anyone knows some sources were to get colonist\civilian\officials and scientist type miniatures in a fitting scale and style?
  3. razeak
I tried my first shot at wet blending last night on the crusher. I think the result turned out well. Though I wish I would have used a different color. I used Dryad Brown and black. I think it looks pretty good, but those crushers online with rust colors, or reds look really good. It was tough not doing blue and black too.

I'm going to go back and update some of my other models I did in black when I first started.

I went to see them at the UK Game's Expo but they didn't have the Giger-esque stuff there. Really curious to see how it looks myself.

Shevvie and I backed that Bio-Craft scenary, so just waiting on those files. No idea if the printer I have access to will be good enough though.

Do you recall if it said there'd be non KS access to the files down the road? I've gotten different answers from various people. Pity, I dropped a grand on the original (failed) KS when it was still physical product, but it was terribly timed for me and I couldn't get in on it this time. It was that OR the Prodos sale.

Oh I mean literally the card boxes the Expansion packs/extra units come in (ExPacs being the abbreviation).

My lack of experience buying board game miniatures is definitely showing! Thanks for the clarification.

It's a mystery to me too. In wargaming circles it's generally just called "more stuff", not AddOns or ExPacs. I suspect it comes from TCGs originally, but I could be wrong.

Oh I mean literally the card boxes the Expansion packs/extra units come in (ExPacs being the abbreviation). They're very rigid and as long as you don't shake them or tip them over they're great for storing models. I even managed to transport some models on a 1600km pair of bus rides using those and a little bit of foam and bubble wrap inside as spacers to restrict movement, although I was pushing my luck on that one I think.

Just out of curiosity does anyone have any specific way that they pack everything back up? I just about managed to get everything back in the box after my initial test run but it was pretty much just in a "well I guess these fit here" kind of way with most of the tiles on the bottom along with the tokens, then the figures in their foam, then whatever tiles were left over on the top.

I use the box to store tiles/tokens, and avoid the foam like the plague. The angled cuts mean I've already broken plenty of Alien fingers, tails, a set of Wrist blades and a spear tip via snagging. If you don't actually need to take them anywhere, the ExPac boxes are a really good storage option. Personally I have the luxury of a glass cabinet I got cheap second hand, and am looking at some more from IKEA.

Yeah I have to admit the first time I took some of the models out of the foam I was really worried about snapping something off. I definitely had to be careful. I'll have to look into those ExPac boxes, hopefully they're not too huge as space to put stuff in general has been a problem for me for years. Half the figures I've gotten over the years are still in their packages simply because I've got nowhere to put them, so a glass cabinet is something I can only dream of.

QuoteI also got an email confirming that the orders are going to take a fair while to actually ship. I'm guessing it's the same one they sent out for the previous 40% off sale since it mentions there being a holiday in Poland in May that might slow things down, unless that's an incredibly long holiday!

Yeah they could have updated that lol. Since then I've also received the "preparation in progress" email, which generally has meant shipping is imminent, but didn't really seem to mean anything in the last big sale.

QuoteEither way I had fun running through the game for the first time, albeit in a three-player match played by myself just so I could try and familiarise myself with the rules and the flow. The final marine came within a single turn of reconning the Predator pod and winning the game when a Predator smart disc flew around the corner and sliced him up, but since I was controlling all three factions I was ok with that! I'll take a look at the rules for the Last Stand mode at some point so I can play some proper single-player games in the future rather than these "that's not how it's supposed to work" kind.

Last Stand is great fun actually. Just make sure to take heaps of Marines/Preds, otherwise the Aliens will get you boxed in early and make it near impossible to progress through the map.

Oh yeah meant to say thanks for the offer with the bases too, cancerblack.

Also, do I take it that any figures that have the blank/basic bases are multi-part and any that have the more detailed ones are unicast (with the exception of things like the Alien King)? And that if that's the case all the marine packs are multi-part?

Correct. The only unicast marines are in the core box.

Cancer any chance you can give a brief tip on how to make those stripes/underdome details on the alien skulls look like they have depth like that?

It's reasonably fiddly. Also note that you may wish to add or remove steps if using different colours, it's more of an art than a science.

Over a matte black base I paint stripes of the same base tone I use for the flesh (Citadel - Stegadon Scale), then give the cranium a wash of dilute black (same one as it's based with, using a premade black wash would kill the smoothness as you'd have two different blacks competing).

I then highlight the sides of the stripes, leaving the top third or so of each as-is, with Stegadon again. This is followed by smaller highights of Citadel - The Fang and Russ Grey.

Next is a second, very thin wash of the base black, over the whole area again. While it's wet, I quickly use my brush to push a little away from the brightest highlights.

This is followed by another layer of black wash (thickness as per the first, not the second), painted in a line across the top of the cranium, front to back, which I feather out slightly to make more of a blended gradient.

Finally I use any remaining wash to quickly re-coat the front and back (ie; non striped) areas of the cranium to ensure a nice flat finish. I've given mine a gloss coat to finish but they look great without it too.

For the record, the Praetorian and Royal Guard are the same thing - both versions of the model come with both stat cards.

Something I'm not sure if you've had time to think about is that the multipart models (on your previous order, just the sentry guns and loader - the king is multipart but has a diorama base) come with generic black bases that stick out like dogs balls next to unicast stuff. If you're on Facebook I can direct you to a guy who makes cheap, good looking bases to remedy that.

I also forget if you mentioned what experience you have with miniatures (other than liking boardgames), these are resin which means there's a few key principles (you may or may not already know):
    - They're a fair bit more fragile than the rubbery plastic in most boardgames, the tradeoff is the insane detail
    - The multipart ones require some cleanup with a hobby knife. Unicast technically don't, but benefit from a bit anyway.
    - Assembling multiparts or repairing any damaged models can only be done with superglue. Do not use anything else.
    - Keep out of direct, prolonged sunlight.
    - Anything that's bent/droopy can be fixed with hot water. You can also create alternate poses this way, within reason.
    - Should you get a hankering to paint them, wash the models and use a spray on primer before putting brush to them.

And on the topic of bending things with hot water, here's some super quick reposing of the Alt Warriors, although I plan to get a lot more ambitious once I have more on hand:

Thanks for the tips! Yeah I don't have a ton of experience with miniatures outside of getting Warhammer 40K back when I was in school and gluing some of that stuff together. But that was decades ago, so this stuff is definitely good to know! I've been going through the rules of the base game and taking a look at the models included there and realising that yeah, I'm definitely going to have to be very careful with them. Stuff like the Aliens' tails look they could snap off really easily.

I'm not on Facebook, but hopefully those bases won't bother me too much. I assume they just never got round to doing unicast versions of every model, since only some of them look like they come in both versions or unicast-only on the website?

Thanks, I'll put those on the list too. I feel like I'm probably going to end up one at least one of everything on the Alien side purely because as I said earlier, this really is a "now or never" situation. I was looking at the list thinking "well, I kinda want a Praetorian too.....and then obviously a Royal Guard to go with it.....and those Evolved seem nice.....and some eggs......and I might as well get  Crusher too." So I'll probably make another order of stuff I haven't yet ordered and then another one of extras.

Quote from: [cancerblackThey're not for The Hunt Begins at all, so don't worry. I did get an extra base game to counter the Spawning issue and bulk my numbers though. The models that can be spawned are Infant Warriors, Stalkers, Warriors and the Predalien, so hypothetically you may want extras of those, but it's worth mentioning that you'll very frequently not be using all your models in one game to begin with.

Additionally, IIRC you can only have half as many Facehuggers as you have Infant Warriors in a given list; this means you'll be limited to a total of 5 unless you get more Infants anyway. 5 Huggers are unlikely to cause so many casualties (which then have a 50/50 chance of spawning the relevant model) that it's ever a serious issue.
Personally, I'd only worry about an extra Predalien just in case, the rest you shouldn't need to worry about.

Thanks, I might add another Predalien to any potential future orders I make before the sale ends then. Probably better to have too many of certain figures than not enough.

Or I'll just go nuts again and order more of all of them, either way.

Also my copy of the base game arrived earlier today, so at least now I can spend this time before all the other models arrive getting to grips with the rules and playing some games with the regular version. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in!

If you do make another order, make sure to grab some Evolved Warriors too, they're very nice models and the cheapest (in points) HQ unit for the Alien faction. Would recommend more Sentry Guns too, as you can take up to 3 per Marine squad in your force, and if you ever, say, ended up with more Marines, or playing a defensive custom mission, you'll be glad of the extra pair.

Is there any particular in-game reason to have so many, or do you just like the figures in and of themselves? Like, I remember reading somewhere that if facehuggers attack Predator hounds they create stalkers, but since there are only, what, 5 in the base game, could I find myself in a position where I didn't have any more models for that particular scenario unless I bought more?

Needless to say I'd rather not find out I've screwed myself in some way by the time this sale is over and I can't get any more.

Did you get a confirmation email when you placed your order? I haven't gotten one yet, though as I say the order is there in my history, and Paypal says the money went through. I'd rather not wait until the end of the week for some sort of shipping confirmation only to find out it was borked at a point where it was too late to do anything about it.

EDIT: Looking at the comments on their most recent Facebook post it seems as though other people are having the same issue.

I guess that's all you need if you've been into this game for years now. Me on the other hand....

And that's on top of the base game I ordered from Amazon.

I'm also seriously considering making another order for some eggs, a royal guard, a Praetorian, evolved warriors and a Crusher. Help me!

Well, hopefully that all went through, because the second I clicked "confirm my order" I got 503'd. :P Still seem to have it listed in my order history though and my cart is empty, so prooooooobably not going to try clicking on it again just yet.

That's basically my justification for it. After this week, barring another "no we REALLY promise that THIS ONE is the FINAL sale!" sale, this is likely the last chance we'll ever have to get this stuff at reasonable, non-inflated secondary market prices. So what the hell? I'm suddenly in a very "money's made for spending" mood.

To hell with it, let's throw in an Alien King and some WY Commandos while we're at it! Machiko too you say? Hell yeah, gotta add a 14th item, 13 would be unlucky! And it seems like it's calmed down a lot now, so now there's nothing holding me back from all this financial foolishness!

    That's the spirit.

I think I've already spent at least 2K GBP on the damn stuff over the years, trying to justify 12 sets of the kit I reeeeeeeally want on top. It is the Final Final we promise this time sale tho...

I managed to get the Hellhounds into my basket in one click, so that's progress I guess! Now for everything else!

EDIT: Alas it feels like it calmed down for those few brief moments before going back to its previous "good luck with that" state again.

It's probably only going to get worse in the immediate future as more and more people realise the sale has gone live. I'm caught between my urge to press ahead and try to get my order in before stuff potentially starts going out of stock and wanting to wait until things hopefully calm down a bit and the site becomes somewhat stable, since right now for every time I get a page to load, the next one doesn't.
