Constantine Sekeris, one of the concept artists on The Predator, is back with some more concept art from his time working on the film! This time around we have some designs for the various Predator hybrids that would ultimately be cut from the film! First up is a multi-limbed monkey type hybrid!
Today I’m sharing a Predator Hybrid Multi Limb Monkey creature. Production designer Martin Whist and Shane Black had notes exactly that of multi limb hybrid Predator monkey. Typically I spend some time exploring in sketch phase if I have the time with simple paper and pencil. For this creature I had to jump right into 3D and blast out something pretty quickly in a night or 2 after hours.
Early part of the script there were a lot of different hybrid creatures that Tully Summers and myself tackled. I’m not sure if 3D were in the ship in the pods or the Predator Scientists/Emmisaries were experimenting with different animals and mixing DNA. I think there were some initial quick ideas and wanted to see some quick options to explore if it was something to refine later. In the end all that was cut out of the final edit of the film. Regardless, was still fun tackling this as an exercise. Looking at it now with fresh eyes I would make the skin texture patterning a lot simpler and graphic.
Constantine also shared some rough concepts on his Facebook page of a Predator monkey hybrid with a more traditional amount of limbs!
I found another 3D zbrush quick rough design pass at the Predator Hybrid monkey. I almost forgot I did this. You can tell this one didn’t go further past what you see. I didn’t get to pose or refine this at all, but still fun to see. With an assignment like this I typically start with some very quick sketches on paper and pencil to get my mind flowing with ideas and different silhouettes, but I didn’t have that luxury on this one and had to jump into 3D right away and as a rough start.
Even though its was short time on these was still alot of fun to at least do something. Eventually when I have some free time I’d love to go back into this design and finish it all the way. Also keep an eye out for the other amazing artists who did passes at these guys.
We recently asked Alec Gillis of Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. about the various hybrids, a collection of creatures that Alec told us was dubbed ‘the Menagerie,” and he told us that ADI also worked on 6 or 8 designs for a variety of creatures that had been collected by and experimented with by Predators.
Early cuts of the film had more focus on the DNA tampering aspect of the story but it was largely removed from the released cut of the film.

Indeed, indeed.
Indeed.
Yuck!!!
Your ire is directed at the wrong people.
The script creators are responsible for the concepts, not the art department.
Ha! Indeed
They look like failed David experiments if he had found Predators and not Engineers.
