New Alien: Covenant Production Still Shows Ship’s Security Force In Action & Offers Enigmatic Code

As we begin the agonizing wait through the week, looking out for the imminent Alien: Covenant teaser trailer, 20th Century Fox has released a brand new production still showing what we presume to be the security forces of the Covenant in action!

220512052104

There’s very little to go with from the still but we can see what appears to be a callback to the shoulder lamps used by the Colonial Marines (or perhaps cameras?) and more contemporary looking rifles.

This new production still was also released with an enigmatic caption: “220512052104.” What exactly this number alludes is currently a mystery! Sound off below if you have any ideas!

What are the numbers referring to? I thought perhaps a countdown but seems too long for anything.

Still nobody seems to know. Maybe we should ask Mason.

Exactly. Its no big issue but its a bit annoying. Especially since Ridley seems to be taking inspiration from what JC brought to the table with ALIENS.

Now obviously in the shot with Katherine, we can't see the entire gun so they might have modified the F90 further than what we can see.

And the shot with what appears to be blatant AR15 variants of some sort is a bit more annoying because the AR15 is even more so recognizable than the F90/AUG.

Its possible the shot with the AR15s is a flashback of some sort. Guy Pearce did say he was going to reprise his role as Peter Weyland. And if its a flashback with young Peter Weyland, that shot may take place in 2020 or some nearby year where we'll still be using AR15s.

For reference Peter Weyland's Ted Talk takes place in 2023.

Yeah, I get the complaints regarding the weapons. I don't think it's a massive issue but with Aliens being so well known for iconic sci-fi weaponry, it would have been nice to have seen a little more original or better disguised. They toyed a little with it in Prometheus -

My favorite bit is Daniels is holding a current issue F90 with an ACOG. They didn't even remotely try to make it futuristic.

Given that Covenant is set more or less 87 years from the present, it'd be like our private security/mercenary types running around with largely unchanged Garands or M1917 enfields (with original accessories). That's ignoring the fact that the F90 is largely just a modified AUG, which is as of this writing over 38 years old already.

In Prometheus they at least made a passing effort to have the pistols and shotgun look pretty SciFi. The aesthetic of the shotgun in particular was cool.

The Weyland-Yutani security dudes look to be toting some AR15 variant with Eotech holographic sights.

Don't judge the book by its cover. It's just two pictures regarding weapon stuff. I like them anyway. They look practical and simple. I don't like when things are overdone and look too sci-fi fancy. Simplicity is the key.

Jungle warfare. What is this, Contra?

What's wrong about jungle? Do you want all the time to see Aliens killing people inside ships/buildings? I think we have been spoiled by four Aliens movies regarding that subject and now jungle seems to us ... bizarre.

Oh, nothing. I love Contra and jungle combat (the gun battle in Predator is probably my all-time favorite gun fight in a film, or close to it). Spreadshot ftw!

The last digits, 2104, are the year Covenant takes place, right? Ten years after Prometheus.

    It should be 2103.

Does the prologue not take place in 2093 and the Prometheus gets to LV223 in 2094 ?

SM's timeline says it gets there 2093.

And the film ends on New Years Day, doesn't it?

Dunno guys but this is shaping up like AVPR = they promise everything we missed so far (in Prometheus). I hope its not another fan service mess in the making....

    Like Rogue ONE...
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc2kFk5M9x4

Yeah i unsubbed RedLetterMedia after this video of Rogue One of them, their video's well mostly the guys in it started acting like they know it all and dissing out almost everything and not even being funny but just retarded,
and in this they just overdone it.
Rogue One was a rollercoaster ride and very entertaining, but these f**ks i cant stand them anymore.

Just a thought, but perhaps this pic is from part of the viral campaign rather than being in the actual movie? Maybe the viral shorts etc will aim to sort of connect the dots from Prometheus to Covenant? ???

The AR platform will be around for generations to come due to its durability, versatility, and adaptability. It's not unreasonable to infer that these weapon platforms could be used in this time period, or at least an evolved similar looking successor.

What this shot shows us is that this film has some James Cameron to it. And that is a very, very good thing.

Weren't the Sulaco weapon racks stocked up with contemporary weaponry?

They had some SA80s and M4s, yeah.

Black Alien Down...MURICA...that's the feeling I'm getting now and I'm not liking it :'(

    Really?

    from 1 picture?

This forum has lost its mind.

Thanks for the generalization, Buddy.

Its like people getting butthurt over a Fast and the Furious film using Volk CE28Ns wheels on a 370z instead of Volk CE28NRs... In the end, outside of major car and wheel nuts like myself, no one notices or cares. Folks are going to see Alien: Covenant for all of its awesomness, not the guns the marines/security forces are using.

No doubt but Aliens did spawn a whole subculture of fandom that are really into the military hardware and tech. The Pulse Rifle and Smartguns are just as iconic as the Aliens, I reckon. It's not unreasonable for people to be a bit upset.

It is, however, unreasonable for folk to think this spells doom for the movie. Let's take a step back and consider your hyperbole before posting and looking silly.

AlienS fans are never happy smh, I hope Ridley make 20 more sequels to this and don't let Blomkamp get anywhere near of the franchise.

This is not a place to come and antagonize fans who don't agree with your views. It's a place for fans to discuss these films maturely. It wont be happening again.

Personally I'm loving the change of locale. I would prefer to have seen a hived up jungle as opposed to just a jungle but it's a refreshing change of scenery, I think.

I seem to recall they codes and stuff with the social media last time, so probably.

Yeah, they definitely had some number based puzzling in the promotion for Prometheus.

The whole thing looks like a still from a trailer for the new CoD or Battlefield or something, not that its a bad thing.

Also the floodlights kinda look like an easter egg reference to the end of P2, when the pred ship takes off. Very similar.

Have no clue what the numbers mean. But as many people mentioned already,  it probably has something to do with the release date for the trailer.

The photo immediately makes me think of the film Predator - certainly not any Alien movie. Lol - the silhoutte reminds me of the Charlies Angels silhouette.

Unless this is some kind of Mad Men / Don Draper flashback scene that one of the Covenant crew is experiencing.

My bet is its a flashback scene to earlier pre-flight training back on earth that "empowers/inspires" one of the crew to take some kind of action in space.

Is it just me, or are they wearing baseball caps and what looks like bulky ghostbusters backpacks with wire coathanger-ish antennae?

They look like they are acting stealthy, but why would you switch on the floodlights if that was the case? That could be stage lighting though...

    Well, f**k me.

You managed to squeeze the closest thing to an apology out of SM I've seen to date.  Maybe, he does have a heart, after all.  OK, so it's the smallest, cruelest, unforgiving heart... but still a heart.  lol.

(Just kidding, Man.  Love your work.)
