It's possible the egg was carrying 2 facehuggers.  One got on Hicks but it was too late for embryo implantation, so it got Babe the ox.  The other is a queen facehugger and got Ripley.

Or it could be the queen facehugger got both Babe and Ripley and the other facehugger died without being successful.
