Let's stick to the topic guys and girls, which is the solution for the franchise, that "let's pretend the prequels never happened" solution.

Sticking to a topic seems a rare thing on this forum.

So you don't seem to be a fan of the prequels.
Another reason why the split idea ain't so bad.

Does anyone think that the Xenomorph was included in Covenant to appease some backlash from Prometheus?
Pretty much. It was a tool to draw people in to see the sequel, cause everybody loves the alien. It had no good reason to be in the film though, and none of the things Prometheus was criticized for were fixed.

To paraphrase RedLetterMedia: "They're wise enough to see the criticisms of their film and then keep the things that are criticized and change other things."

Imo that is not an accurate summary of Red Letter Media's reviews of the prequels.
- The RLM "Prometheus" review was positive. Jay loved it. Mike was OK with it.
- The RLM "Covenant" review was; Mike was meh and Jay hated the xenomorph being put into AC because it wasn't original.

* Essentially; Jay loves the "Prometheus" parts in AC and hates the xenomorph parts.
By contrast the Angry Joe channel hated the "Prometheus" parts and loved the xenomorph parts.

* Conclusion; the fan base is very split over the Alien franchise since "Aliens".
The prequels just highlight how fractured the fanbase is.

* What's the answer? The Fox studio needs to pay attention to just making more money with the next Alien movie.
Trying to cater to various hardcore Alien fan factions is self defeating because there is nothing close to overall agreement.

* A movie franchise lives because it makes enough money. Get more rear ends in seats with the next movie.
- How can that be done? One option is the studio could hire Cameron as a consultant and maybe he could figure out a money making story.
JC certainly has a lot of opinions about the prequels.

And yet it's an incredibly popular film that many later products and other franchises have been inspired by and essentially launched the franchise.

Yep, spot on. Without Aliens, Alien would have just been a good sci if horror movie.

Aliens did indeed launch the series. We saw comics, action figures etc.... and extended universe so to speak, and of course several sequels.

Just a point to the earlier people commenting on Cameron...

James Cameron was writing the Rambo II script at the same time he got the gig to write Aliens and he was inspired by that experience and also by the brilliant novels Starship Troopers and Forever War.

He really did create something as good as, if not better than, the original.

The original film is a classic, but I also think its reputation over time has been enhanced by the sequel.

Also I think a Netflix series or whatever could be an alternative to a new film.

Colonial Marines?
Wetland Yutani's bioweapons division?

Or something incorporating them all?

It could work.

I think we need a third movie... The one that will connect everything and
end with the biggest question yet.

A split.

Direction 1: more David, Engineers, mythology,...
Direction 2: more xenos, less or no Engineers, no David, marines sometimes,...

Wouldn't that be perfect?

BOTH
a continuation of David's journey into madness. Focusing on research, mythology, creation,...
(when that's finished, more movies with a deeper background story, more thriller than action, more in the vain of Alien and Prometheus,...)
AND
a brand new movie series or stand-alone movies where all the stories are about problems involving xenos.
Could be either a thriller, bloody horror, brutal action or a mix. More like Aliens.

Totally cool with all this!!

Enoch

+1 Thats cool. Knowing that Alien is valuable Fox franchise, I would like
to think they ll go that way. I have an info from various places on the internet,
that Fox again hired some movie franchise consultants to discuss options for Alien.

It's not a summary of RLM's reviews of the prequels at all. It's something Rich Evans said when describing how DC approaches their superhero films (people complain about stupid characters and ugly aesthetic, DC change the tone of their films, while keeping the stupid characters and aesthetic). It just something that applies to the Ridley Scott prequels just the same: People complain about a weak story and stupid characters in Prometheus; sequel adds alien and gives it a nonsensical origin, while keeping the weak story and stupid characters.

SM

It contradicts the previous films and contradicts what the entire franchise was about. Here's how bad of a contradiction it is: the name of the franchise is now wrong.

Enoch

Not necessarily, but for now it seems so...

SM

Good lord.... :-X

Why? The black goo and the creatures it can produce are still quite alien.
