Darkness

It appears this Summer John McTiernan’s Predator will be getting a limited re-release across cinemas in France with a brand new 2K restoration! As many fans know Predator suffers from a hell of a lot of grain and dust, most notably in the early jungle scenes with Dutch and his team landing in the hot-zone and it was due to the type of stock and poor lighting that was used when they originally filmed the movie. 20th Century Fox first released Predator on a bare-bones blu-ray release in 2008 with the grainy picture quality we’re all used to. Critics still panned the picture quality.

Fast-forward a couple of years later, and Fox released the “Ultimate Hunter Edition” in 2010 with a new digital transfer. Fox essentially used a lot of digital noise reduction, removing the grain entirely but giving the film a glossy look, and most reviewers criticised the picture quality even more than they did before. (See Predator Blu-Ray Comparison for a look at the differences). This 2K restoration is something new and it comes from the French distributor Capricci Films. You can check out a new trailer for the new release below as well as a new Predator poster.

2K Restoration for Predator Poster

The new 2K restoration of Predator will hit French theatres on August 17th. There’s no word on whether or not this will come overseas or not, or even if Fox will release a 4K blu-ray version of Predator at some point on the future. I’d say it’s highly likely we’ll get something before Shane Black’s Predator sequel is released in 2018. Thanks to @amesmonde for the news.

Whatttt, I need it in my cinema! And a Predator II director's cut, that's all!

Holy crap that was an awesome trailer.

I don't like the trailer at all, but I would pay 30 euros to see it in cinema really...

The flack the Ultimate Hunter Edition got was undeserved in my opinion. Arnie looking "waxy" was like one or two shots. Otherwise the film looked gorgeous.

Holy cow, I wish the original trailer was like this.

HuDaFuK

Really hope we get this on a new Blu-ray!

I took that 2008 blu ray disc and just snapped it after I purchased and watched the ultimate hunter edition , the 08 disc is so grainy it makes the film look very old as well , the reason why people complained about the UHE disc was because they wanted it to look like it was filmed in 87 the way the theatre's showed it, but seriously the 08 disc version is finished, unwatchable. Nevertheless I got the 3D blu ray as well so when fox release it again when The Predator is released they'll need to do a complete overhaul like James Cameron done to aliens even if they only sell it in a trilogy pack ill buy it for the better remastered version for top dollar but if its just a simple over do, count me out I've purchased a lot of version's that'll keep me happy.

The bare bones blu ray is watchable, the UHE is not, a 2k remaster is preferred.

Why is this only being released in France?

Do they dub the movies in french over there or use subtitles?

I saw it last night in Los Angeles on a DCP. It was very clean but in the beginning, Dutch and Dillon's faces look so smooth they seem Photoshopped. Maybe they were just that handsome in the 80's but... Besides that, was a great time, solid audience who cheered and applauded at appropriate moments. Truly a near perfect film in terms of story, cast, production, execution and longevity.
