Not flamethrowers.  A tank mounted machine gun that shoots out a flame when fired.  (Most guns produce some type of flame or flash when fired)  Like I said, it is likely the Browning M2 .50 Caliber machine gun.

And I did like the Newt/Ripley relationship, if only because it made Alien 3 that much darker.
