Johnny Handsome

And cloaking device.

Smart weapons have got to see them first and for all we know they might carry some sort of technology that scrambles anything like that so you can't get a lock on them. It wouldn't surprise me at all. And if they didn't they'd soon adapt so that they did have something like that. It's what they do.

Except the whole interstellar travel thing, they still have that on us. :)

That's how they get here, but it doesn't necessarily give them a combat advantage. All we've seen them use it for is transport.

And pocket nuclear-like devices. That too.

We have them down to at least briefcase-sized (if not, by now, a lot smaller), but what advantage does that give them in combat? They only use it if they want to commit suicide.

So, basically, you're saying both sides would have access to nuclear weapons. Again, that doesn't give them an advantage over us. It just puts them on parity.

And plasma guns.

I doubt they're literally plasma weapons, as plasma is hilariously bad at following a straight line, but OK, they have some kind of energy weapon... But it's much less destructive than what we have access - and is very slow (as is the system they have for generating firing solutions).

And light weight metals that cut through steal.

Again, not really much of an advantage on the battlefield. We've got ammunition which can penetrate steel.

A technology which we're beginning to get into, too. But it won't help them much unless it also masks their thermal and motion-sensing signatures, along with a host of other stuff. All we know for sure is that they can somehow bend visible light - and, as someone who's been trained in CCTV security, I can say a many computerised surveillance systems would easily cue on that shimmer they produce, the moment they move around.

I'm going on what we've seen evidence of on screen. Otherwise, we might as well say they have magic, too. :)

Is a Predator a formidable opponent? Of course! Is it necessarily a match for a realistic portrayal of decent modern military forces? Eh...

But that's exactly why it's better to keep it hunting civilian and paramilitary targets.

Humanity has nothing the size of hairdryer that's as powerful as the Predator Plasmacaster. It can punch a hole clean through a man's chest.

Even if we just go by ordinary guns, we've got weapons which can do a heck of a lot more than that... Plus, the US has already got operational naval laser weapons and will soon be fitting actual railguns on them, too.

A lot of what that shoulder cannon does (with whatever it actually fires) is relatively low-powered. Look at dutch's shoulder - it super-heats a patch of skin, at most. If anything, it has more kinetic than thermal energy, for some reason, judging by how it throws him back. I'd say even a flare gun essentially does to a human being what a Predator's shoulder cannon can.

It can be destructive, but seems less so than our comparatively primitive conventional firearms.

Sure... but all of those are so huge they have to be mounted on battleships. They aren't even nearly man-portable, and even if they were, you could never move around with them because you'd be tethered to the enormous generators required to power them. We have conventional weapons that could put a hole through a man, but you can't pop one on your shoulder and run around with it.

We have nothing so small that can do comparable damage.

It doesn't hit his shoulder. It hits his rifle. The damage to his shoulder is from the M16 exploding in two. The Predator deliberately destroys his gun because he wants to draw it out.

Can we just have a fun discussion on the idea of themes for the next Predator movies instead of ripping the fictional lore apart because tech is catching up to the scifi antics of the 70s and 80s?

Besides, if the Predators wanted to enslave the human race (for future hunting, workforce, food, whatever), to do so would require them to take out the militaries of the Earth. I would think they have a lot stronger arsenal for full-fledged war. Remember, the Predator loves to put themselves on even footing with their prey. They hunt civilians and paramilitary with the human equivalent of their equipment. Hunters will wear camo, have knifes and medical kits on themselves, along with a ranged weapon or two.

Amen PRJ. Anybody would think this was a thread for people that didn't like the Predator films, lol.
