Prometheus, Kubrick and Ambiguity

(1/3) > >>

Ash 937:
I found this blog that compares the attempt at ambiguity that Scott attempted in Prometheus to the work of Stanley Kubrick. I found it to be interesting and I also share a lot of the same sentiments as the author.  Here is the intro in full.  If you like what you read, the link to the rest of it follows the excerpt.

There is a difference between mysterious ambiguity and bad storytelling. I'm beginning to think that Prometheus may fall into the latter category.

I started thinking about Prometheus again last week after a reader of this blog said they were looking forward to seeing the documentary Room 237 at the New Zealand International Film Festival. It is a documentary about the multitude of possible meanings people believe are secretly encoded in Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece The Shining.

Kubrick's films attract grand theories because his work is inscrutable, meticulously researched and carefully calculated.

Ah, I love how the universe revolves around english speaking directors.  And that LONG nobody is filled with them.

There is tons out there as good or better then Kubrick [who I am generally not a fan of.  I love "2001" but that is about it.]

I know it is the internet where kubrick is worshipped like a god, so I am expecting a shit storm of "You know nothing about film" remarks.  Just my opinion nothing more.

I certainly like Kubrick's work (I even like Eyes Wide Shut)... but you have the right to your opinion... and I for one can understand why you may not like his films... they can appear cold and somewhat emotionally unengaging. There is also a certain amount of revisionism too (whether rightly or wrongly deserved is another debate) as The Shining (a bit like Bladerunner) got a bad press at the time. Saying one likes Bladerunner and 2001 is these days shorthand for "I know movies and I've got taste".  ;)

Zenzucht:
To keep it simple, my only requirement for the movie is how well does it draw me in into itself..
