Predator mythos?
« on: Jun 14, 2012, 11:40:57 AM »
Possible Spoilers - Read at your own risk:

Seeing Prometheus delve into explanations for human origins as well as the bio weapons that come to be what we know as the Xenos/Aliens got me wondering; what do we know of the Yautja and their own respective mythos?  We obviously know they adhere to a hunting code, but what do we know of their pantheons of gods, mythology and their origins?

In Steve Perry's prose novel AVP: Prey, it's mentioned that the Yautja mythology includes a figure called the Black Warrior, who's their version of Death/The Grim Reaper.

I'd be more interested in their sociology. They cannot always be hunting; they have to have a home planet and people to build/repair their ships and weapons, among other things. I doubt hunting is their only form of recreation as well.

We see the hunting parties in the movies, but gosh, what about the business owners or priests or chefs?

A violent culture can't get as far as they have by being violent all the time.

IMO Yautja culture is more similar to that of ancient tribal nomads than to that of 21st century Americans/Western Europeans.

If yautja culture is your thing I would recommend: http://www.oocities.org/gunsandgod/intro.html

It's an old old old site. but still quite useful.

If that's the case, could they really develop space travel?

As long as they have scientists, engineers, etc. I don't see why not (obviously they aren't a perfect analog to human tribal nomads).

Their culture revolves around hunting dangerous game. The desire to become the deadliest hunters could be a factor driving technological innovation, especially if different factions compete with each other.

Look at the development of Europe. Rampant competition among multiple factions.

Another theory could be that they somehow acquired advanced tech from another race

Another theory could be that they somehow acquired advanced tech from another race

The novel Predator: Forever Midnight suggested that they stole their warp engine/drive technology from some peaceful race and then made slaves of them.

I don't buy this, it cheapens the Predators by suggesting that they are not good enough to invent it themselves. Also that they would have slaves. That was also the novel that renamed them the Hish.

I respect what the writer was trying to do, create his own mythos, and he did a fine job, but it is not something that I personally like. It doesn't blend well with the way the Yautja were represented.  It is just one interpretation of the Predators.

I don't think it would be out of the question for them to have slaves. I can kind of see it, seeing as how they have no problem kidnapping creatures to hunt for fun.

I can also see them sealing technology, though I don't like that theory for the same reasons you do.
