Really? I'v always interprited it as that they have encountered alien lifeforms before rather than not believing her. The way Hudson says the line it feels more like "So what, we have encounted aliens before" rather than a "Thats bullshit" kind of way.

It could be a combination of the two - they've encountered extraterrestrials before and kicked their ass, so they don't believe her when she's talking about some kind of unstoppable super-creature.

Yeah, pretty much, I think a combination of the two. With the overall attitude of the marines, Since they we're so overconfident and cocky about the whole situation about fighting an alien. And the carefree nature of everyone about the Xenomorph. Kinda tells me that they we're epecting some kind of Pest like indigenous life. Seriously no one gave a crap that she saw a alien. Especially one that bleeds acid and uses humans as a host and is highly hostile and cordinated.

I think of them as having fought less lethal alien animals before.

Precisely. It was definitely implying they had engaged some kind of alien species before and emerged victorious. The fact that only Ripley wasn't confident truly showed how much of a threat the Xenomorphs were compared to whatever the marines may have fought beforehand.
