Aliens: Newt's Tale
« on: Feb 09, 2012, 02:29:53 PM »
I understand this comic book story utilises elements from the Director's Cut of the second movie (e.g. Newt and her parents being the ones who discover the Space Jockey derelict); how does it explain how the xeno's bred so quickly?

I don't think it does.  There cut-throughs in which a lot of time is skipped between initial contact and the actual invasion.

It doesn't.  You go from the alien popping out of Newt's dad to a crapload of aliens storming the complex a few pages later.

The first issue is basically the story of Newt's family finding the ship and the complex getting overrun, the second issue is basically Aliens from the point where they find Newt.

It doesn't explain where all these aliens come from? All of a sudden, they're just swarming all over the place? That sucks.

Those colonists must be really stupid, going into that ship after what happened to Newt's dad.

And in the Director's Cut, Lydecker says that Newt's family left Hadley's Hope a week ago, so it would presumably take them the same amount of time to get back. I can't see them being able to return to the colony before the aien gestating in Newt's dad hatched out.

They didn't know what had happened to Russ Jorden exactly when they went to investigate.

And the dialogue doesn't say it took them a week to get to the Derelict.

I think he's mis-remembering the dialogue about how long it takes a message to get from earth to the colony.

I only read one episode of this in a comic I bought years ago.  Would have liked to have seen the whole story.  It didn't appear in any of the Aliens Omnibus's.   :-\

I would like to see more of that backstory.  :)

Newt's Tale bares little resemblance to what's hinted at in the film.  No detail on how they obtained the live facehuggers, how the procedure was done on Marachuk, how any of the damage to the colony that the marines discover was caused, nothing about the "last stand", how the coccooned woman Dietrich found ended up there, etc.

Considering the second issue simply retold Aliens (and covered events that Newt wasn't around to witness, thereby not really making it her 'tale' anymore), and add in the fact the artwork was very mediocre - the whole thing is a bit of a waste of time.

nothing about the "last stand"
I do remember a "last stand", with Aliens swarming in and just bulldozing everybody.

Yes, they hold up somewhere and weld themselves in.  A group of colonists head over to the atmosphere processor where they discover the hive and the cocoons.  These guys are then ambushed like the marines were in the film.  Later, only one of them makes it back, one of the colonists opens the door to let him in when the aliens pour in.  And...

And none of that corresponds with the film.  They seal themselves into a storage area in the sub basement, rather than the ops/ medical wing.  Simpson and Lydecker have modified dialogue but similar from the film but never pop up again.

Despite being released in 1991, it would seem that those responsible for Newt's Tale didn't have access to the Special Edition.  And also possibly didn't have access to the theatrical cut either.

Indeed.  Oddly, the comic also includes a few scenes that didn't make it into any cut of the film.
