Maybe it didn't feel like waiting, and decided to go look for hosts itself, rather than wait for them to come to it? I think there might be a couple other instances in the EU of aliens abducting people and taking them to where there are eggs, rather than just hoping someone happens upon them by chance.

The entirety of the Alien gameplay in 'AvP: Extinction' is based on that idea. You go out, grab hosts, and bring them back to the hive.

In fact that's likely what happened in 'Aliens' - the Aliens captured all the colonists and brought them back to the hatchery.

I actually quite like Byrne's Earth Angel. Be a shame if it wasn't very plausible.
