I actually enjoyed both the trailer and the movie, maybe it's because a lot of us at PlanetAvP at the time thought it was cool. :-\  Anyway, the movie could have been a lot worse; I only recently saw Species 3 and I was amazed at the SyFy channel's ability to destroy movie franchises.  I thought Lake Placid 2 was the only movie series which this channel had blasphemized, but apparently destroying one amazing movie franchise wasn't enough.

Species 3 not only destroyed the continuity of the movie series, but it also drastically altered the theme, style, and mood of the 2 films that came before it.  What was once an action movie franchise about the military hunting down an Alien seductress became a movie about a college student who had to fight his sexual attraction to another female alien while at the same time try to uncover some sort of alien conspiracy.  The storyline of the series was drastically changed and in my opinion, the film should be erased from the canon of that franchise.

AVPR actually had the decency to keep to the traditional themes and style of its predecessors, even if the plot wasn't as great as fans would have wanted.  I'm just thankful that SyFy never got a chance to make its own entry into the series; it would have killed the entire AVP franchise just like it did with Species and Lake Placid.

EDIT: Species 3 was actually a good film by SyFy standards if you compare it to many of the company's other endeavors; they actually used real life props and suits rather than composite all the monsters in CGI.  I appreciate the Strause Brothers for not being this cheap and lazy, at least.

The AvP franchise is already dead

No need to quote an entire post just to say one small sentence.

I wouldn't say the AvP franchise is dead because the films did make money.

I guess I have a bit more faith in the franchise than you guys, but you're right when you say the franchise is on its last strings with the AVP films and the AVP2010 game.  Prometheus and A:CM are our last hope.

Off topic question: Was that game really that bad? I thought it did good?

The game wasn't as scary as its predecessors and it got very repetitive, there's also a multiplayer xp problem where the game forgets the xp you earned.

Predxeno is right. AVP2 scared the hell out of me at moments. I was sweating when I was being stalked by the Predalien in the observation pods.

AVP3 is eye candy. That's it.

I loved AvP2 as well. I never understood why they didn't just use that for the story for one of the movies.

I think from past experiences with that whole transfer from video games to movies, i've discovered its never going to work out. Trying to squeeze in the storyline of a 40 hour game into a 2 hour movie is basically impossible. Especially when you have a budget your constantly working against and studio finacial risks. People complain that the comic books of AVP should of been made into movies but you can't do that with such a budget FOX would give you. Paul did the best he could with a mediocre budget and a shitty idea. I actually enjoyed the first AvP but if i'm being honest, yeah...it was shit as far as being an Alien or Predator movie goes. But by being a stand alone film with JUST Predators and Aliens it actually wasn't half that bad.

But yeah, the AVP movies could of been a WHOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEE EEE lot better. To me as stand alone movies. The first AVP is actually a entertaining and fun movie. But AVPR...Even with an open mind I'm still unable to enjoy that movie and I'm sure it will always be that way. I mean even to someone who's never seen an ALIEN or PREDATOR movie before that movie would still suck. The movie relies solely on creature effects and gore to make things happen. Its a teenage drama slasher flick. It just unnecessarily inserted things into the film that basically EVERY Alien/AVP/Predator movie was trying to avoid. And that was becoming basically just a shitty B horror film. Which ultimately AVPR became in the end was just a shitty B horror film...more like a big fat F to be frank.

avp was a comic book story, not really movie material. i guess comic fans are so forgiving about the movie because the comics started the series, but it's harder for movie fans to forgive.

in avp, predator movie fans were not pleased as their favorite hunter was turned into a flashy pro wrestler and a ninja. comic book characters in which if i had to favor one i'd pick the ninja. at least in avpr the predator is a little more pleasing. unfortunately for alien fans they had nothing to be pleased about in either movie. the predator alien dosn't bother me much due to my own thought up answers which i've posted in the queen-predalien thread to give me comfort.

what was in avpr is what should have been in avp. it's all leftovers and loose ends that should have been addressed in the 1st movie. it shouldn't have been necessary to make another movie but you might as well enjoy the extended ending. the plot of avpr was still the 1st movie, it's not 2nd movie or a sequel, it's all just extra where your still watching the 1st movie.

maybe if someone were to combine both avp movies into one more complete movie, than something better could come from it. but until then, for me to watch avp i gotta get into the mood. for me to watch avpr, i can watch that anytime because i would rather watch the ending than the beginning of this comic book story as events play out faster.

I agree. AVPR was just a flop. AVP had a 50million dollar budget and grossed 175 million. While AVPR had only a 40 million dollar budget and only grossed 127 million. FOX basically just made a sequel for the sake of making a sequel due to the fact that they made 175 mil off the first one. AVP didn't even get good ratings. I remember the AvP website where they would have you vote who would win. LOL, that was cool. I remember seeing the Predator getting more votes. But they made the movie to be this BIG epic battle between Aliens and Predators. It just wasn't. I enjoyed AvP sure but where was the big battle? Where are the hordes of Aliens vs big tribal bands of Predators vs. The Marines? You know, thats what people wanted to see, instead we got this minimalistic, 90 minute, B movie with mediocre setups and creature effects. But to be honest I blame the budget the film was given. With only a 50 million dollar budget thats basically the most they could do. AND for what they were able to do I actually enjoyed it. As a stand alone film AvP actually has rewatch value and I would definitely watch it again after my baby which is the Alien series.

AVPR just stings me everytime I watch it. Just nothing but pain and misery. The movie wasn't fun, it wasn't cutting edge and its certainly not something I think should be respected or admired. It just flopped. The only thing that movie succeeded at doing was the creature effects which were done by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. who had done all the creature effects since Aliens. Those guys rock. I love em. The only other redeemable quality about AVPR was the fact that it had Aliens in it for me. Those were basically the ONLY two redeeming qualities in that whole movie and why I have it on my shelf.

But overall to even say AVP or AVPR is better than the Aliens films or even the Predator films is RIDICULOUS. I understand everyone had their own opinion but come on. The true quality in the Aliens series is colossal. The story is so rich and robust and full of awesomeness and epicness. The Predator series was good too. Not a huge fan of it but it certainly is a good franchise. The AVP franchise didn't make the Aliens or the Predators look badass, it basically just shit on the classiness of the entire series. AVP succeeded at trying to be original and I could say that this film avoided all the shitiness AVPR gave us. But yes to be more specific, it was AVPR that shat on the entire franchise. Not only the original Alien and Predator movies but just the fun and entertaining set up the first AVP gave us. And boy did the AVP series go down fast. You know the first AVP had something somewhat interesting going for it and than here comes along the shitfest of AVPR.
